At another board, a young woman who is an assistant manager at a doggie day care center has ringworm contracted from one of the dogs at the dog day care center. She noticed the rings on her skin about a week ago and went to a doctor today and it has been confirmed that she has ringworm. She has taken every necessary precaution to bleach everything she has touched. She is afraid that her four gliders would contract the ringworm from her. The question is, can gliders contract ringworm from people? I advised her to have someone else prepare the food for her gliders and to play with them. She called her vet and this vet is out of the office for the day. She called another vet and is still awaiting a return call. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Jen

Yes, they can. It's not common, but it is highly transmittable. vet should be able to see it under a special light...if it's established, flaky skin and hair loss will follow if a glider is infected, as it progresses. I hope they don't have it.

I work at a Petstore and deal with it on Guinea Pigs all the time and my Glider has never got it. The way our in store vet tests it is a plain old black light. Of course they take a culture test to be on safe side. Sometimes wring worm looks like a scab on the Guinea Pigs. I am also a proud owner of a 4week old female oop yesterday.

Peanut got what felt like a small bump/lump on the side of his neck. I kept an eye on it and a couple days later the fur around the bump/lump disappeared and made an actual ring. Dumb me didn't put 2 and 2 together although I was treating myself at the time for ringworm and our dog. Finally dawned on me another couple of days later when Peanut kept scratching and it got a scab. By then it LOOKED like MY ringworm and I panicked. (how could I have been so dumb?) vet said use the same treatment, the Neosporin w/out any pain med in it till it was gone and then another week after that. It took almost a month for all of ours to be gone. Our dogs vet said they get it from dirt, can give it to us so we can pass it around ..lol FYI Ringworm is not an actual worm of any kind. It is a fungus. (I bout died thinking we all had worms!) LOL

i have never heard heard of using Neo on ringworm you have to use a anti-fungus med like for athletic's foot. Or sulfer bathes. In the vet world ringworm is a nightmare.

The young woman is taking every precaution to prevent her gliders getting ringworm from her. She loves her gliders so much! Oh, I bet ringworm is such a nightmare for vets to treat! Thank you for all of your advice! I appreciate it. Jen

The stuff for athletes foot is what i have always been told to use as well(plus it works much faster). I worked at Pass Pets and that is what our vet told me to use when i contracted it. ok, so i played with the puppies a little too much, lol Ringworm is a fungus, and so you would need an antifungal, not an antibiotic. The neosporin would be good to keep it from getting infected though

I wouldn't suggest neosporin unless the ringworm lesion is already superinfected. That might show up as wet oozing or crusting. But removing all skin bacterial flora from the ringworm spot just removes competing micro-organisms that compete with the Tinea (ringworm fungus) for resources.
Lotrimin (clotrimazole), Tinactin (tolnaftate), Monastat (miconazole) and Mycostatin (Nilstat, Nystatin) are antifungals. The last one is frequently used orally and swallowed, so licking and ingestion is not a worry.
Microsporum canis is a frequent cat and dog ringworm that fluoresces under blacklight. As noted above, not all ringworm shows up under the light. Tinea and dermatophytes sometimes don't.
Some ringworms on humans involve skin in the hairy areas, and involve hair follicles. Topical creams and lotions usually can't eradicate ringworm in those instances, and oral antifungals are often needed. Some of the oral antifungals are hard on the liver and need to be used with caution. (Nizoral, grieseofulvin, Lamisil)
Cultures of fungus take longer and are expensive. In my opinion they are not practical for the usual situations and most practitioners just treat the lesion.

I can't believe I forgot about the Nystatin!! I used that AND the Neo! Yes, it got red was the reason for the Neosporin. Duh (sorry, lol)
