I must say, I'm impressed with this discussion
Also, I'm only online on Saturdays now, so if you want an actual response from me myself, please be patient.
Although, you all have been so thorough and sensible there is little left for me to add!!
Yes, Darcy's vet is experienced with sugar gliders. That's why I chose her.

Today I was at the vets office for My glider Kuzco who keeps getting abcesses in his mouth (only after having insectivore fair and briskys pellets i noticed) I told the vet (shes not the normal one my kids go to) that I had them on ensure and she gave me a look like I had green goo on my face, lol. She didnt know what insectivore fare was either, I explained to her that I got my info from here and that so far its been a good diet for many glider parents, she didnt believe me and just kept making me feel like I was doing something bad. Basically she said theres way too much sugar in it and the same old thing 'they dont get it in the wild' not to mention allt he goodies we give them that they will never get in the wild either, but I didnt bring that up, I just keep listening to her talk about it. My gliders have gained some weight, so I will be switching to 'light' as soon as I can find it, if anyone knows where to find the 'light' kind, please let me know! Theyre all active and run on the wheel I guess I should just put them on the ensure light. Also, Donna, you had mentioned its ok if they dont eat 4 tbs of it a night (i have 4 gliders) do you t hink -since I still have a ton of the reg ensure, would it be ok to drop it down to 2-3 cubes (tbsp) a night? Thanks in advance!

What are some other ideas for protein sources? I'm currently only feeding egg and boiled chicken. I would like to mix it up a bit more, and my glider refuses pinkies or any insects.

Pork, Beef, Shrimp, Fish.. can I give my glider these too?
If anybody has some other protein sources that they've been feeding their gliders sucessfully, I would love to hear about it!

-Thanks
Karen

Low sodium deli turkey/chicken is ok to feed as protien every now and then. Have you tried monkey biscuts? Mazzurri, insectivore fare, baby food turkey or chicken.... that's about all I can think of right now, but I am sure more will come along with ideas as well..

I am also feeding Darcy's diet and am having a hard time finding a protein source that they will eat. The only protein I have found so far that they like is boiled ground turkey. I have done everything from mixing honey and applesauce with various other protein sources but they just refuse. On the bright side they love their ensure mix.

If they are leaving a lot of Ensure, I would offer less until they are only leaving a little bit. (Unless you have a canid to feed the leftovers to in the morning, and who likes lots, LOL.)
Protein sources I currently feed: crickets and quail, mostly; also: chicken, turkey, pheasant, duck, wax worms (rationed for the ones inclined to chubbiness), canned crickets (Darcy's favorite, subject to change without notice), mealworms (only Hunter will eat them), egg.
Mine seem uninterested in goose, and only Daimon liked the dry roasted wax worms (actually, he LOVED them, but he's the one who is least in need of extra fat!) Freeze dried crickets will get eaten if I am late putting out better stuff. The Zookeeper's is currently ignored, but again, that could change at any time. They go through phases. Next week, who knows?

Donna, my gliders eat ALL the ensure (4 cubes for 4 gliders) and I noticed theyre ALL except Moe, is gaining weight on it. Especially Poe, and she used to be the smallest of the 4, so I guess its good to a point with her, but I can tell even when I pick her up how much heavier she is. I was wondering if its OK to drop to 2-3 cubes a night instead of 4? I tried looking for the ensure light and cant seem to find it?? Any help on that is greatly appreciated. Is there anything else I can cut back on to decrease their weight if I cannot find ensure light? they still play the same,t hey just have gained weight? Thanks for all your help, Its greatly appreciated...oh and did you read my post about my vet..she doesnt think its a good diet, but my b/f and I both got a bad vibe from her...she didnt seem to know what bml or insectivore fare was, she asked 'is that fed to insects?' IDIOT! lol..but shes a well known vet around here for rabbits, so any suggestions will be great, thanks donna!

I'm not an Ensure expert.....you will have to wait for Donna to give you a definitive answer; but do remember that it is the Ensure that supplies the vitamins and the calcium. If you cut back on the Ensure you are cutting the vits and Ca. I'm thinking you should expand your search for the "LITE" variety or ask your grocer to order it!! [/]

Can someone please sum up the basic Darcy diet? I am guessing it is similar to BML, just substitute one cube of BML for one cube of Ensure? Still feed fruits, veggies, and bugs like before? Do you add calcium? How much? Even with the added calcium, do you feed mostly high calcium/low phosphorus fruits and veggies, or is it like BML where it doesnt matter as much? Thanks!

If I read it right. SHe will be online on Saturday's only for now. You may need to send an email. Perhaps an expert on the diet can answer this question.

I am sorry, I know nothing about her diet.

[:"blue"] I can't say for sure; but MOST stores will. At my store, they even have a short little preprinted request form that they hang on the shelves throughout the store. The grocery business is very competitive and they will usually bend over backwards to keep their customers happy!!! [/]

Jenn:

I couldn't begin to guess what Target might do. Giv'em a call and see what they say. They are such a BIG store.....they might be less responsive than a smaller grocery store. On the other hand, you may not be dealing with the main store administration. I think you usually find the Ensure in the pharmacy section and I think they are sort of independent of the main store.

First, I am not an expert on anything
In my opinion, if you need to drop the Ensure below one teaspoon per glider to control their weight, I would wonder if they're getting all the vitamins & minerals they need. If you can't get a local store to order Ensure Light, you can try ordering it from their website www.ensure.com if you want. Or perhaps try increasing their exercise?
If you can't keep them at a healthy weight on this diet, you might want to consider a different diet.
And yes, this diet is basically just substituting Ensure for the bml mix, but I give them more protein, because Ensure contains less protein than the bml mix.

Yes, Randy, teaspoon
In any species, individuals of different sizes and activity levels require different amounts of food.
A large and/or extremely active glider might drink an entire Tablespoon of Ensure per night and not gain weight, but smaller or less active gliders might need to cut back in order to remain at a healthy weight.
I would not cut back farther than to about one teaspoon of Ensure per glider per night.

JenJen, I believe she is referring to my post...

Deli turkey/chicken can be used in a pinch if you need a protein. I wouldn't suggest a constant diet of it, and would be wary of the things they do to it, but I do not see a problem with occasional use in a bind or as a treat. Just be very careful with it.

Thanks for the info on the bacteria tho, I didn't know that.

[:"blue"] Last month Dr. C wrote a short message commenting on Darcy's diet(The Ensure® diet) in Lisa's newsletter with the promise of more detailed comments the following month. Well, it's here.

If you missed the original article, you can see it HERE.

The second part of her comments can be seen HERE.

And just a gentle reminder to be respectful of alternative points of view. We very much want to hear your comments; but please be sure they are offered in a respectful manner.

Thank you.[/]
