Has anyone here ever had an ultrasound procedure done on their glider? While he has shown some improvement on certain antibiotics, nothing has eliminated North's UTI and the vet brought up the possibility of doing an ultrasound to try to get some answers. At this point he seems to think it's not worth the stress to North and expense and I'm inclined to agree. I was just wondering if anyone here at GC has had an ultrasound done on their glider and, if so, the reason it was done.

I may be talking out of line, so if I am wrong feel free to correct me. Have you tried giving your glider some cranberry juice watered down. i know in people that have urinary problems that cranberry juice is good for you. hope your baby feels better and gets well soon.

on the other hand if the glider has been given cranberry juice or citrus on a regular basis it could also be causing problems.. have the vet check for crystals in the urine.

Yes I had an ultrasound done on my glider to check for any bladder problems. She is used to being on her back and having her belly rubbed so she was fine for the procedure. It also helped that the Doctor doing the ultrasound let me hold her. Good Luck. Theresa

When my Pika first started having problems with her eyes (over a year ago), the doctor did an ultrasound on her face. She was put under anesthesia to conduct the ultrasound. Because the vets had not done this procedure on a glider before, they didn't charge me anything for it. Unfortunately, it didn't give them any tangible results...

I would agree that doing it under anaesthesia would be the best option. Except for "exceptional" gliders like theresaw's, I think they would be too wiggly for the Dr. to see what s/he needs to see.

They can put them under for a very brief time, just long enough to see what they need to see, then wake them up. Peepers was put under for an x-ray a few months ago. Of course anytime anaesthesia is used, there is a risk, but it's relatively safe.

North's latest round of test results should be back on Friday and hopefully they'll give us more info on whether an ultrasound is warranted. He was put under anesthesia last spring for his neutering and recovered well but I'm still wary of doing it again unless it's absolutely neccessary. I think there's a good chance North would let me hold him while he's awake for the procedure but I have a tremor which I'm sure would make it impossible to get decent ultrasound results. Unfortunately there's no way I can get this procedure for free and the vet says it would be at least $300 to get the specialist in to do it. Money is not my primary concern but I've already spent over $1,000 the past year just on North's vet bills related to his UTI. I'll have to further discuss with my vet the chances of an ultrasound actually leading to a diagnosis and cure.
