I noticed that my glider Nari was not using her rear leg the night before last. I took her into to the vet clinic that is listed on this website for Columbus, Ohio (Sunbury vet Clinic). The vet had owned sugar gliders in the past, and has treated them before, so that made me feel a lot better. He examined her and told me that her muscles felt good, and her leg felt normal. So he thinks she may have just sprained it. I really hope that he is right. I was so scared when I saw that she wasn't using her leg. I know hind leg paralysis affects many gliders, and I was extremely worried that she might have this condition. But I feed her the modified BML diet (same as the one listed in the diet links on this website). I am very careful about what she eats! Has anyone else had a glider that sprained a leg...or had anything that sounds like this? She has movement and feeling in her feet, and seems to be tucking the leg up when she runs around. She doesn't use it at all to jump or climb, but I've seen her move it just slightly if she is walking on the ground. Other than her leg, she seems healthy, she's eating and drinking normally and her stools are also normal.

I have not had experience with HLP, but have heard others say they were diagnosed with HLP by means other than just palpitation of the leg. Wouldn't they want to xray the leg to be sure it was ok first? I don't know, as I said, I have never dealt with it. But if it were mine, I would want to double check. If it was a sprain, and painful, did they give you any pain meds for her?

I am sure others with experience will chime in here.

Did the vet xray the leg? I recently had one of my gliders break her leg. She wasn't using it, but didn't seem to be in pain, let me feel her leg and such. I took her to the vet and the xray showed a break. She now has a pin in her leg to help it heal. There is a thread called "Broken Leg" in Health and Hygene you might want to read.

If the vet did not do an xray, you need to take her back to the vet and have it done.

No, the vet did not xray her leg. I asked him if we should get an xray and he said that he should be able to tell if one was necessary after he examined her. He examined her and did not seem to be very concerned. He told me to monitor her for the next week. He told me to come back if it got worse or there was no change.

Initially, my vet couldn't find any problem either. The leg "felt" fine but was indeed broken. Had I waited to see how she did, which was an option I was given, she would most likely ended up having to have the leg amputated. Please, don't wait.

Also, if the leg starts to hurt, she could start to self mutilate it, making her chance of recovery that much more difficult.

I'm not trying to scare you but only concerned because of what I've recently been through with Spryte.

I understand what you are saying...and it sounds very much like your situation. I will try to get a second opinion this week. Unfortunately, unlike you, I am a college student, and I do not have an emergency vet fund. I have $400 I can put towards this situation... If that can't cover it, I don't know what I will do. The other vet in my area is very expensive, which is why I did not go to them in the first place.

I agree with Teresa... although palpation can be a useful diagnostic tool, it is not always conclusive. Xrays need to be done in order to look at:
* whether there is a break in the bone;
* whether there are any blurry areas at the joints (which would be indicative of calcium insufficiency, aka HLP)
* whether there is any dislocation at all
Please do insist that the vet do an x-ray. If nothing else, it will give you 100% peace of mind.
I do understand about being on a limited budget, but x-rays really are not normally overly expensive for gliders & your glider's health is the main concern...
Please continue to keep us updated.

The next question is, if she did break it, then how? If I feed BML back to basics (and I do not deviate from it), shouldn't she be getting adequate calcium and other vitamins? I also trim her nails on a regular basis. I don't know how she could have done it.

This whole situation is making me so sad.

Is it the Back to Basics BML or one of the Modified versions? There definitely should be a good Ca:Ph ratio if you're feeding the Back to Basics BML; however, some of the modified versions allow a lot of leeway in fruits & veggies and there's a wide array of Ca:Ph ratios when that occurs...
However, it's not always possible to determine the cause of bone breakage nor of HLP. Sometimes HLP is caused by a primary bacterial infection; sometimes by too much protein in the diet; sometimes by improper Ca:Ph ratios... There are so many different possibilities...

With Spryte, the best we can figure is it was just a freak accident. Perhaps she jumped and landed wrong. We just don't know.

There were three xrays taken in total with Spryte.

The inital was $66.50 and each of the other two were $41.50.

It did get expensive for her care. With the surgery, all meds and such, the total was $606.34.

I'm sending you a pm as well with a suggestion.

I feed BML back to basics (corn, peas, carrots, and green beans, apples, grapes, watermellon, cantalope, melon, frozen pitted cherries and blueberries ONLY). I ordered the Rep-Cal Herptivite and Calcium that is specified on the recipe as well. I am absolutely sure that I feed them properly. So when I saw her not using her rear leg, I was shocked. I just thought that I was doing everything right and this wouldn't happen to me.

I guess I won't know what is going on until I get some better answers. She'll go to the vet tomorrow for Xrays.

sounds like your diet is perfect, so that's definitely NOT the culprit in this case thumb
There are other possibilities. Maybe she got her foot caught on or in something in the cage, even though you keep her nails trimmed. Is there another glider housed with her? Maybe something happened there. There's just no way to really know... Hopefully the x-rays will at least reveal some answers to you about why she is favoring that leg. Doubtful that it's HLP with her diet, but if brought on by a bacterial infection, the diet wouldn't make any difference dunno

She lives with Coorain. They absolutely love each other! He is doing wonderfully. He has just started scent marking, and has also figured out how to carry things with his tail.

I just checked on Nari and she was grooming herself with the same leg that she was not using the last two nights. I took her out of her pouch and watched her walk. She walked with both legs and then jumped onto me. I was NOT expecting this. Do you think I still need to take her to get an x-ray even if she continues to use her leg?

Well, I don't really know what to think...but I guess the first vet I saw must have been right. My last post I said that I saw Nari grooming herself with the leg that she had not been using the previous night. Later that night I watched her and she was using it like nothing was wrong. She has continued using it since then. Everything seems completely normal.

One of my boys once had trouble walking, and it was due to a nerve pinch. There was no telling how he was injured, but some anti-inflammatory medicine worked just fine.

So if it's not a break, maybe there is some swelling that is pinching her nerve.

At this point, I really don't know what happened. But, she is back to normal. She's running, climbing, jumping and grooming with the leg. (Thank God!)

Nari, No i wouldn't worry about the xrays at this time, however; if you notice she is favoring it again, it may be something to seriously consider

Thank you everyone for your responses! I am so happy that Nari is okay. If this happens again I will make sure to get an x-ray done. Hopefully it won't happen again. I am so grateful that this resource exists where I can get advice from people who know about sugar gliders. I know I can trust the advice I get here, and that makes being a glider owner a lot less stressful during times of crisis when you don't know what to think or do. Thank you Glider Central!
