I have a one year old human baby, who had gotton a peace of glider poop in her mouth (YUCK!) and I am trying to get some info on this issue, Are the chances of her getting sick high? has this happened to any other children of you glider owners? lol. Thanks so much!

is she sick now..?? you might want to call the doctor just to make sure and tell him what happened

I haven't ever had this happen, but my kids are also older. If you're really worried, I'd suggest a trip to the dr. Hopefully one of the members with younger kids may have more info for you...

I don't think gliders carry samonella - with all the things that kids eat, I don't think I would worry to much about it. (Just don't make it a part of her regular diet!) My son has eaten a whole lot worse in his life time!

Try googling "sugar gliders human illness" or something like that. It should tell you if they carry samonella. When I was thinking about bringing them to visit my school, I remember reading that there was not a whole lot of illnesses that they could transfer - just don't remember.

I remember a post a while back and I believe it was said that gliders do not carry simonella..however any leftover food can have it however it first has to be in the enviornment..ie an uncooked egg or bug or something. There was a case of someone child having simonella but it was not figured exactly where it came from. Kids eat lots of stuff..I have seen much worse. I would say keep a close eye but you should be okay.

As a matter of fact sugar gliders CAN carry Salmonella, I thought a few years back I read that, and yes i did find it on the SGU site also, as well as many others, I searched "Sugar Gliders & Salmonella" and was surprised at the results. Yes my pediatrician had me bring her in,The lab gave me the containers with Perservative liquid in it, and I need to bring back all three 7-10 days after it's collected, ( Like I would not do it sooner though! ) It will take 48 hours for the results though. Scary! I keep the cges cleaned down every day, and scrub down once a week. I use lysol to dysinfect the floor around the cage every morning since the get it all nasty with food.( It's a large cage about 5 ft tall by 3 1/2 feet wide) I think I am going to look into a netting to go around the bottom. My male has an issue with aiming to poop "outside the cage" instead of in it, I try to pick it up as soon as i see it but my 1 yr. beat me to it. Sorry the post is so long winded! I'll keep you posted.

An occasional glider may test positive for Salmonella, probably after ingesting it on food. An occasional human toddler will test positive for it for the same reason. I would worry more about what she comes in contact with at day care. Or when we swim in rivers and lakes.


People don't like to think about it, but when their glider grooms, and then licks your fingers with licky treats, you are coming into contact with he same germ population your daughter sampled. No biggy. If we are worried about avoiding all cooties, we aren't very well-suited to be glider homes.

As a Pediatrician myself, I wouldn't have cultured her stool unless she develops fever and bloody diarrhea, which I would not expect to happen. I would just watch her and report illness if it occurs.

When we say that an animal "carries" a certain bug, it just means that an animal can have this bug/germ in their body and not appear ill. It doesn't mean that they all have it or that most have it or that any at that time have it.

I'd be way more worried about the bacteria in the ice machine at your local fast food restaurant or in a human mouth than in the glider feces.
