hery guys, i have a year old female that is acting strangely, i just went to feed her some grapes and found her still in her nest box.

she really unresponsive and i cant get her to eat, shes barely strong enough to hang on to my shirt.

the only cause i can think of is hypothermia, because tonight is a particularly cold night (for florida) and her cage isnt near any heaters...

anything you can help me with is needed

Take her out and put her in a pouch and under your shirt. Body heat will work great, is she cold to the touch? Check for dehydration by lightly pinching the fur between her shoulders and pulling up. If it stays tented she is dehydrated and needs fluids.

She did look dehyrdated, but she's not cold to the touch. What can I do to get her to drink?

If she is that week, she may be best visiting a vet for subq injections as that will work the fastest. You can offer her some gliderade, some apple juice, even some syrup to get the sugars back in her.

Get her into a vet asap. If she is dehydrated then a vet can subQ her to get fluids back in her quick.

there isnt any emergency vets that will look at her ( we leanred that the hard way after a 6 month old we had a while back took a hard fall)

there is one in tampa, but its a long (and cold) drive from here. and we always get lost trying to find our way around.

id like to avoid that if possible, is there anything else i can do for her here?

A vet is your best bet. If she is as dehydrated as you say, that may be her only chance. Here is a list of vets in your area and a list of vets in FL

any vet will be able to subq an animal. Also most vets won't turn away a sick animal.

Sil. The last time we had a sick glider, 4 vets turned us away. So we're looking to find a good one. Calling now actually. Thanks anyway.

Know that you and your baby are in my thoughts and prayers, hoping for the best.

Until you can get her to a vet, force-feed her with an eyedropper giving her Pedialyte, if you have it (otherwise gatorade will do in a pinch). Please try to get her to a vet ASAP though because once a glider is dehydrated, they can pass very quickly.

I'm moving this over to Health & Hygiene now. Please take a moment to register so that you can post an update for us...

What part of Florida are you in? In Orlando, I can recommend 2 vet offices and 4 separate doctors.

[Edit: Dr. Jackson is not the correct name]Dr. Barnett and Dr. Hill at Underhill Animal Hospital are experienced with gliders and have EXTREMELY reasonable prices. An emergency visit and 2 weeks of steriods and anitbiotics cost me all of $80 there.

At Union Park Animal Hospital Dr. Brown and Dr. Randolph are experienced with gliders, though they are more expensive. An office visit (walking through the door) with an exotic animal will begin at $65.00.

Edited:
If you are closer to DeLand, Dr. Erin Holder at Florida Wild Veterinary Hospital is willing to examine and treat, though I'm not sure how much experience she has with gliders, I haven't seen her in a few years. She is an incredible small animal Doctor.

When Yoda was dehydrated I found that Pedialyte mixed with honey tempted him into drinking, and that if it was too cold, he would shake his face and snort/sneeze. This made water bowls, bottles, and syringes no good. As an alternative, I put the water in my hand, which warmed it quickly, and allowed him to drink it a cc at a time from my palm. It's a little more time consuming, but worth it.

Please keep us updated, and if you are close enough to Orlando, please call Underhill Animal Hospital. Dr. Hill is on medical leave, but Dr. Barnett treated my ill little Yoda a few days ago and he is improving.

GOOD LUCK!
