Robert, usually pine is adbvised against because of the strong odor. It's irritating to their super sensitive noses. Imagine if you had their sniffers and were put in a house of pine, where you couldn't get away from it? It's also (I believe) been known to cause respiratory problems. yes, i have read, that all "soft wood", such as pine, cedar, etc, been known to cause respitory problems.
Quote:

cedar, white pine and ponderosa pine contain phenols. these compounds are acidic and potentially dangerous to small animals. they affect the lungs and liver. in the former they constantly irritate the nasal passage, thus increasing the potential for bacteria attack. in liver they place a heavy load on its blood filtering capacity. once the liver is unable to filter out phenols, it becomes far less effective. further, it appears that phenols depress the immune system, including conditions typically seen in older gliders. in short, the phenols reduce the life expetancy of animals.
Quote:

this statement was taken from the book Sugar Gliders as your new pet. hope this helps!!

I definately wouldn't use pine. Just think of how strong the smell is for us and then times that by 10 or more. I would feel sorry for any glider who was kept in pine.

Carefresh is a good alternative litter. It is made out of recycled newspapers w/the ink pressed out, so it is non- toxic. You can find it at your local pet store in the small animal/bedding aisle. (pine is fine for other animals, but I wouldn't recommend it for gliders because of their sensitive noses... cedar causes upper respiratory infections)

Dukefan, its not ok for SMALLER animals, not sure of the effects on dogs and cats. But I know for smaller animals, hamsters, gliders, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc etc its NOT GOOD for, so keep that in mind everyone! just cuz its cheaper doesnt mean its better or healthier! Personally I use newspaper(in a tray, they cant reach it) for my gliders and carefresh for my rabbits litter boxes. Personally I think carefresh is probably one of the best beddings out there, I've tried feline Pine and corn cob, and other types of litter that reminds me of cat litter but isnt...and its just not as absorbant as the carefresh bedding.
