hey guys, just fig'd i'd let you all know that i've just seen on the news that in Baltimore City, they're passing a law that you must have a permit to have exotics. such as snakes, reptiles, pigeons. i didn't see sugargliders but i can only figure that they'll be listed as well. they said you had a month to call a certain dept. [[i didn't hear it as my dogs decided to bark]]to agree and disagree and such

if its for all of Md i'll be getting a permit!!

I didn't even notice the link with the full regulations at the bottom of the 2nd page (duh!). It does have them lumped in with the other marsupials on page 7, but, it also says the restriction on owning/selling them is only in Baltimore City...

I strongly suggest EVERYONE in this state (or surrounding states, for that matter) contact their local rep to express your feelings on this. This is how BSL started with dogs and it is spreading like wildfire, as most people think 'it is not my state/city', but each day, more and more are losing their right to have their pets every day. Do not sit idle on this before it is too late to act. Find out who your local state rep is if you don't know already and tell him you do not support this.

Holly, go to the Sun's homepage: www.baltimoresun.com and do a search for "iguana" as the title of the article is 'City takes aim at your iguana' (published on 2/6/07). I used to live in Pasadena, and then in Glen Burnie real close to Pasadena, but moved back to IN 2 years ago next month...

off_topic My brother recently got a new pit in MI and they have to have special permits and insurance, and that stuff can only be had if the parents have the same thing and have passed the counties temperment testing and all this other stuff, but pits are his breed of choice, so he goes through it all to get his new baby smile

Come on everyone...let's unite to fight this. They are taking public opinion on the planned changes, including the banning of sugar gliders, until March 2nd. Please, as the article says, contact Assistant Commissioner Olivia Farrow and voice your concerns!!

no offense to any1. but, if it happens in baltimore it's immediately in the news, anywhere else it's not in the news. i've seen this sort of thing happen too many times now: from dec to jan in my neighborhood, there was a death [[ppl claimed the cops killed the boy]], 2 stabbings, and some1 ran their truck into a neighbors house. none of that was on the news except for the death and we're pretty sure it was only cuz ppl are saying the cops manhandled the guy. my expectations on baltimore aren't really all that high. i had surgery and my stepdad walked down the street to the store and stopped and asked directions and the dude he was talking to had a gun and told him he should come back to the hospital b/c he didn't belong there and would end up getting killed. the dude followed him all the way to the store to make sure he got there ok.

i think that if you already have animals you should be fine, but you should get the permit. it's kind of rediculous when you think abt it. but i can understand where ppl are coming from. ppl let their snakes go when they get too big so this is a way to stop that. some animals just shouldn't be kept in the city.....

I definitely understand where the city is coming from in drafting this legislation but I think it's very easy to agree with parts of the document and not the whole thing. Also, the only animals you can get permits on are chickens, pigeons, and pot-bellied pigs. Unless I missed something under the proposed regulations sugar gliders are all out banned...no permits. Here is what I wrote:

Dear Assistant Commissioner Farrow,

I took a look at the proposed regulations on exotic and farm animals and am not happy. I think that the reasoning behind the regulations is sound; I don't think the average person should own such hard to keep large zoo animals as bears and kangaroos and I don't think livestock should be kept in tight city conditions. But some of the animals being banned are not a nuisance to anyone. Sugar gliders, for instance, have found their way into many homes and are spoiled members of countless American families. I myself am the proud owner of two such sweet creatures. I'm also concerned with the banning of "large rodents". What does this include? Rats? Chinchillas? These are also common and loved pets in many homes today. Many of the people who own small breed exotics are hobbyists who are very
well educated on the breeds and have them in nothing but the best of living conditions. If these animals are suddenly banned, what happens to those already living in Baltimore homes? I can understand the licensing of the more uncommon pets, but sudden outright banning of happily adjusted family pets is absurd.

Thanks for your time

Alot of things aren't on the news in williamsport being considered the lil' philly. The general populous only knows about a handful of shootings in the last year.Just two weeks ago there was two in a day that no one knew about. They go on little spurts here and they are usually drug related. It's sad. But my point is the news won't always put them in.I agree with holly.
