Honestly I didn't think I would be making a post in this forum for some time to come. But here it is...

I just returned the other day from a 3-week vacation home. I took most of my gliders with me...I only left one pair in Florida, Ate & Binx. They were a very young pair, in perfect health. I didnt want to leave any of my gliders behind because I feel so anxious when they aren't with me, but one of my housemates was leaving his 3 in the care of a friend that we both knew. I thought, well, I am bringing home a lot, the trip is going to be hard, they will be okay for the three weeks. So I left 2 behind. I left that pair because I was worried, due to their being so incredibly hyperactive, that something bad would happen at my house. I have 4 cats and a large dog at home!

Before we left, my housemate and I went to the store and bought all the supplies we would need. We bought more than enough food to last the entire time. We tried to buy food that would be the easiest for the sitter to feed, while still being an acceptable diet for a short amount of time. I wanted to make BML, because its what I normally feed them, but in all of our moving and confusion (we both moved right before leaving town) we lost a lot of stuff.

Anyway...the point is that the food was there. I left highly detailed instructions. Anyone who knows me knows I am really really paranoid about anything happening to my gliders, and I really hate to leave my pets with other people. I really should have gone with my gut and just brought them home. But...we left the food, but I still left a list of what foods they could and could not eat, "just in case." Plus every single phone number of mine, my family's, and my friends, if they needed to reach me. PLUS all sorts of vet information and explicit instructions to absolutely take them to the vet if they even suspected anything was wrong. I would rather, as I wrote, come back to deal with huge vet bills even if nothing was really wrong, than have something bad happen.

So I thought everything would be okay.

So, so, so wrong.

First, the glider sitter went out of town for a week without telling us. She told me literally at the last minute and left me scrambling to find someone else willing to take care of them. I eventually convinced one of my new housemates to do it.

The girl told me over the phone, the day she got back in town, that she would be taking care of them again for the rest of the time (only a few days). At this point I had no indication that anything was wrong. I had been in constant contact with everyone.

Well, the very day I was coming back to Florida I got a call that the female, Ate, was dead.

My housemate told me that when he had checked up on them after the "friend" it looked like she had not been cleaning the uneaten food from the food dishes, or putting fresh water out. So there was rotting food and stagnating water in the cages, which also were not being cleaned.

The girl left a phone message on my cell last night saying that she "heard from Brian that one of my gliders died." I'm confused as to why she had to HEAR this. She should have KNOWN this...because she was supposed to be taking care of them!!!!

Back on the food issue, when I finally arrived back I found out that virtually none of the food we had left for them had been used. So I am seriously wondering what on earth they were feeding them, and why on earth they weren't using the food put there explicitly for that use. Its all still just sitting there. When I looked into Binx's cage, he had a bowl full of lima beans-- one of the foods on the "do not feed my gliders these foods" list.

Im pretty much at a loss as to what to do. I'm incredibly angry but I know that nothing I say to her will really do any good one way or the other. I cant believe this happened. I suppose I am lucky the other 4 gliders that were left in this girl's care are allright. Binx is very active and alert-- bright eyes and such-- but he looks very fat and bloated. I know I have to take him to the vet, and Im thinking maybe all of them should go to the vet. Since I dont know what killed this girl who was in perfect health when I left her. She was only a baby, only about 9 months old.

I never thought something like this would happen. I thought we were trusting our pets to a reliable person, who cared. She volunteered to do it, for heavens sake! No one forced this "chore" upon anyone. I talked to her several times while I was gone, and everything "seemed" fine. But after hearing the report from the other people living in the house what she was telling me was apparently not what was really going on.

Im just frustrated with everyone here. Myself, for leaving them behind, this girl, for being so cruel, my housemates, for seeing this going on and not telling me or doing anything about it. Its all very upsetting. This is the first glider Ive ever lost, and losing her in this way is just even worse.

I am soooo sorry that this happend to you. People can be so extremely senile. I may have to leave my gliders behind when I go on a trip and I want to ask someone here to glider-sit for me. I truly am sorry for you and your glider and I hope something isn't wrong with your other gliders.

As hard as it is, don't blame yourself, you did what you thought was best for them. you thought you were leaving them with someone reliable that would take good care of them. No matter what you do, you can't replace the glider you lost. I know how hard it is to go out of town and trust someone else with their care! I had to leave for a week recently and was petrified something would happen. Fortunately, they were all ok, in spite of an escape the night before I got home! That's one of the major drawbacks with gliders is when you go out of town, finding someone to take care of them.
Hugs sweetie, and hopefully your friend will at least not do this to anyone else! You might do some checking around and see if there is any one in your town that does petsitting, even if you have to pay them, it's worth the peace of mind!

OMG this is so terribly sad i feel just terrible for you!!
well, sadly i can tell you it sounds like she may be liable at the very least is obligated to replace the glider she killed on you,it does sound like she neglected them, there may even be some sort of legal action u can take especially if she signed for their care while caring for them. It may seem silly to some, but i would even consider small claims court if she is being nasty or non chalant about it at all.
having documentation from your vet can only help your situation so i say go for it.

How sad. I am so sorry. What a horrible person this "so-called" friend is. I hope that you do find comfort in knowing that Ate is now in a very happy place and will be waiting to see you again someday. Give Binx lots of extra hugs and kisses from all of us here at GC.

I am so sorry that you had to go through something like this. I know how hard it is to leave your gliders with someone else to care for them, but we only do it because we feel it will be better for them. That is why you did it and you also thought you were leaving them with someone reliable so none of this is your fault. I would however say something to the girl or at least question her as to why none of the food you left was gone and why there were lima beans in the cage. I wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut, but your right it may not do any good anyway. The only possible hope would be that she will never do this to anyone else's pets. Again I am so sorry that you had to go through this. It is always hard to lose a glider no matter how they go. You and your other glider will be in my thoughts and prayers. Make sure to watch and make sure he continues to eat and play the same as always and if he doesn't you may need to get him another playmate. Sometimes they don't get over the loss until they have a new mate to help with that.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your poor babies.....I just don't understand how someone could provide substandard care when dealing with someone else's pets. My goodness, I think I go the extra step whenever petsitting. I would just hate to have to make that call to someone who trusted me. But it is definitely not your fault.

What a great idea! My bf and I were discussing who we could ever ask to glider-sit them, assuming we ever get to take a vacation. I would also be willing to do this for someone else. As it stands we are only planning day trips this summer because we don't trust anyone enough.

I am so sorry that happened to you. I do not understand how people can treat animals that way. Our friends are very immature for their age. I am only 19, and they are older than me by five years. I could never imagine leaving Zoe with these people... now I need to make a list of people I would trust to take Zoe if I ever went away for a little while.
I'm sure they know you did everything you could for them while you cared for them.

I will never understand people that can be so neglectful and uncaring. I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you, that's awful. I hope that sitter realizes what pain she has caused you!

If your other gliders are healthy, it may be that your glider died from some unrelated illness that just happened to occur while you were gone. It might be a good idea to take the others in for a vet check, just to make sure.

I'm sorry for your loss, though. What a horrible thing to have happen.

I know how you feel. At my prior residence my 'Mother' found it to be a necessity to give my glider away without my knowledge. Upon my returning home from the mall, i found that the spot where my glider's cage once was to be vacant. After months of not knowing where the 'more appropriate home' (as my mother called it) was, i found out. My precious glider that i had only so long to get to know had passed away due to the neglect of it's 'new' and oh so, 'appropriate' owners.

It saddens me to know that he could still be alive today living a happy life with me or some other family.

I have since moved out of my house with my Mother.

To what my social worker deems as a , "more appropriate home".

I feel your pain and i know how you feel. It's a horrible feeling. Even though it wasn't your fault and there is nothing you can do to change it you can't stop blaming yourself.

But, it's not your fault. Celebrate the life of 'Ate' and all the happy memories that she brought you in life.

You made what you thought was a wise decision. The woman made the wrong decision. She was in the wrong. You were just looking out for your gliders when she made the wrong move.

Don't blame yourself.

Hola.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I had to jump into 68 hour work weeks and Im always too tired to sit on the internet any more :x

I never did confront the girl in person about what happened because...I dont know...I was busy, and the time was never right, and I still didnt know what to say. I eventually emailed her, and I know perfectly well she read it, but she never responded. And I work with her, and she to this day acts like nothing happened.

I guess I just was at a standstill for too long.

Binx is doing just fine, but he seems lonely. Kiwi, my super-social glider, plays on his cage and they never try to fight, so I let them play together the other day. Kiwi "hugged" him (Ive never seen a glider do that before...It was cute...she stood by him and put her arm around him and rubbed him) and scented on him and they played for awhile. So Im considering breaking up my trio (which I have been thinking of doing for some time anyway because of Circe's nervous overgrooming) and putting one of the girls with Binx.

Thanks to everyone for their concern and kind wishes.

I can say I will never be leaving my pets with someone else again. I never wanted to do it in the first place. I just dont like not knowing whats going on. There is too much speculation in this incident and too much "he said she said" going on...ugh. I guess some people just dont care very much.

I just saw this thread. I am really sad you lost your glider. I would be beside myself. These are the kinds of things I am hoping to prevent by starting that glidersitter database. I am still at a bit of a loss as to how to get it posted and updated on this board and on the rescue boards. If anyone wants to be listed as a glidersitter, the posting is under this link:
