I got one of my girls out tonight and imidiately noticed she has two bald spots one above each eye. It's the white part of her fur on her head almost right up to the black stripe in the middle. It's not raw and doesn't look sore, the hair is just missing. My daughter has had a hamster lost in the house the last 3 nights so the gliders have taken a back seat and haven't been allowed out for fear that they would find the hammy and I was busy tearing the house apart! I had fed them and had seen each one and cleaned cages like normal so I think I would've noticed it but I guess maybe I didn't. I don't know what to do. She doesn't show any other signs of being stressed or depressed, she loves her cage mate Buttercup, she's on the BML diet and I follow it to a T. I had her out twice tonight since I spotted it and she seems fine??? Any advice I would greatly appreciate. I've never in the last two years had a issue at all of any sort. We'e only been to the vet for checkups. Never had one sick or hurt or anything. So I'm [censored] out!

it sounds like overgrooming. this is most often caused by stress, but can also be due to an illness. i'd recommend a vet check to make sure all is well physically with her wink

So she is pulling her hair out? With her hands? If it was you Backi would you take her in tonight is it urgent? I can't imagine what is stressing her! Is this a one time thing or will she continue to overgroom? I'm sorry so many questions!

how old is she? I have 2 gliders that are 7 years old and they are missing the hair directly above their eyes too. I think it may have to do with the age of the gliders. That's just my idea though.

yes, they pull their hair out frown

how recent is the hair loss? Is it possible that the hamster is bugging the gliders? Has anything at all changed in the house/room, no matter how small, even a change in scents of laudry soap or shampoo?

Some are habitual overgroomers, but others once the stressor is removed, it stops..

I don't know that it's urgent as in you have to take her now, but I'd recommend getting her into the vet sometime this week..

The thing with gliders is they hide their illness well so it's hard to tell if it's really bad or not, but grooming on top of it I would take her in as soon as you can. I'm not trying to scare you. It's just better to find out the problem before it's to late.

Well, off the top of my head, there was a hamster running the house. It stressed me, it probably stressed her! Do you think she could maybe have smelled her? I also was glider sitting for a lady who lives close to me, thsi is totally normal I usually have her gliders at least a week out of every month, but this time the momma is pregnant so I don't know if that would change anything? I also changed laundry detergant and fabric softener because my hubby ran to the store for me. Oh gosh, so many things I hadn't thought of. Well, the hammy is safely back in it's cage in my daughters room, and the other gliders have gone back home. Brandy is eatting and drinking just fine and acting totally normal w/ me! Oh yea... glidermom she's about 5. Not huge but slightly overweight I'd say, but she's been my biggest glider since I got her about two years ago. Her vet has never had a concern w/ her weight but I do watch her mealie intake ( : I'm thinkign I'm goingt o run her up to the vet in the morning. Anything in particular I should request that they do? Thanks for the quick responses guys, I was so worried!

Generally speaking, overgrooming on the head is caused by stress and not by health issues. If you wait until tomorrow to bring her to the vet, that should be fine. The thing you need to do tonight is figure out what the change in her environment/routine might be that is causing her stress... It could be from the fact that you have changed her routine over the past few days due to the escaped hamster. In fact, I would almost bank on that being the issue. Try to get her back into her normal routine and you should see a decrease in her stress level. It will take a few weeks before the bald areas fill back in though. (In the meantime, I would still bring her into your vet for a wellness check tomorrow.)

Jaimee, she's had a lot of changes this week that could've stressed her from the sounds of it. Please let us know what the vet says tomorrow smile

Yikes Jaimee! Hmmm, knowing how happy Brandi has been since she got Buttercup, I would lean away from stress, even though it is normally a big factor in overgrooming. Sometimes, gliders overgroom the head area when they have pain - like a headache or toothache. I'd be more inclined to think it was something like this. I would take her and Buttercup to the vet & have him check her teeth (looking for anything stuck between or any abcess or infection in the jaw area. They may also want to do some Xrays. Is she swollen at all that you can tell?

I will definetly let you all know. Just one last question. Chloe has that hamster all over the house w/ her. I'm going to go ahead and for now assume that that's what is bothering her. How do I stop it. Do i need to keep the hamster out of the living room and glider room (those are the two places that Brandie goes) can she smell her all the way from the glider room to Chloe's bedroom? It's probably a good 50 ft through 3 rooms and down a hallway...

She doesn't look swollen a bit. You're right she has been really happy, she just loves Buttercup! She seems fine and so does the other cage, whatever is bothering Brandie doesn't seem to be affecting the rest of them?

Ok, but if you start to feel differently, please get her in to the vet. If she has any kind of infection, it won't take long for it to go systemic. Just watch her closely, even take close-up pictures of her face for the next several days if that will help you notice a difference.

My poor 'Nervous Nellie' looses hair above her nose every time she has joeys. (poor thing) Its probobly from stress. Do you have a naturaly timid sugar glider? I know mine is.

Timid, no, LOL, that woudl not be a word I would use to describe Brandy ( : She's as sweet as can be, she's by far my cuddliest glider and she never bites or nips but she still has a very strong personality.
The vet opens in one hour so I'm going to call up and make a app. I'll post when I get home. Wish us luck!

A Hamster can kill a glider. If your daughter has it all over the house, then yes, the glider can be stressed out about it. You need to have the gliders in a hamster free zone.

Here is my guess at this. My glider was scratched by his cage mate. Nothing happened to it though. When it was healing the hair around it started to fall off. I was talking with Priscilla and when they get scratched that is what happens, and then the new hair grows back. In my situation it wasn't anything to worry about, but i took him to work at the vet anyways. Alwayas seeing a vet is your best and safest option!!!

Well, my vet(the only exotics vet in that office) was not in today so I had made a app. w/ a vet they reccomended. He looked her over and listened while I told him all my guesses and all your guesses and everything I could think of that could be bothering her. His conclusion was that her cagemate was cycling and over-loving her because of her hormones and had licked the hair off her head. He said their was no way for Brandy to have done it to herself. I asked many times if he was sure she couldn't have a infection or other problem in her mouth or anywhere else, and he said he was positive that wasn't it. He said he would separate the two and see if it heals up or not.
I didn't feel better when I left in fact I was pretty perturbed. So I don't know??? I'm thinking of taking her to my regular vet tommorow.
Any thoughts??

Hmmm. Thats a bit purturbing for sure, considering that overgrooming is not exactly a rare occurance in gliders.

Might be good for the regular vet to have a look. I definately don't see any reason to separate them though, if anything that would cause more stress...

Jaimee, I'm sure you were perturbed frown She can very well do it to herself, as one of the causes of overgrooming is loneliness wink My Spazz was dad's favorite and was overgroomed (and scent marked) by his dad. The overgrooming is more on his tail then elsewhere, in fact, the most normal looking area on him is his head, lol...

I'd suggest another visit with your glider knowledgeable vet when you can see him/her wink If nothing else, it'll put your mind @ ease that your glider's not ill..

It is likely that she did it herself, despite what the vet says. Twice when I moved (once to my apt, then to my house) Cerulean overgroomed right above her eyes. She was a lone glider at the time and I had no other animals that came in contact with her. She was not ill and never has been. The only explanation is the stress of the move.

Last night I noticed she was missing fur above her eye again. She recently got a cagemate, but I don't think this is the cause of her stress because she was fine with her for almost a month now. She didn't have playtime for 2 nights in a row and I believe that is what caused the overgrooming.

If your Brandy is used to nightly playtime it very well could have been that alone that stressed her.

Also, as for waiting for it to heal, it is not an open wound so there isn't really anything to heal. It would just be waiting for fur to grow back in and that can take awhile. I wouldn't separate them.

I agree that this vet didn't really know what he was talking about. Gliders DO overgroom the area above their eyes regularly due to stress and they CAN do it themselves. Here is a picture of extreme self-overgrooming of the head (Gizmo did not have a cage mate when he did this to himself before I got him):

I would bring her back to your regular vet tomorrow for a more knowledgeable examination...

Jaimee I am so sorry I didn't see this until now. The pm notification either didn't go through or fell through the cracks in my server transfer earlier this week.

my sweet lil Brandie.. please please email me and keep me updated on her. Hair loss above the eyes is not always by the glider themselves and not always done by them pulling their hair out. Sometimes it's overrubbing against something... and in all honesty your vet could have a somewhat correct assumption.

Please keep me posted on her. Kiss her for me. I miss her.. I really do.
