i was just reading someones posting about neutering and i had a question....
when it comes to neutering males do they always remove the poms or sometimes??
what makes the dr decide to remove them completly??
if the doctor gives me the choice to have them removed or not which would be the better choice? because if they remove them i know there would be some kind of glue or stitches and id be afraid he'd overgroom the incision site?!?
does removing them make a difference in scent? i know neutering will decrease the smell.

Most vets leave the poms, mine did. It seems to reduce SMing. There is a sticky on neutering under "Health and Hygiene" that explains what to expect and the best way to do it. It sure helped me!

when Trynyti came to me, he was already neutered. he didn't have his poms. && i think nowadays they take 'em off. i don't really know why. if you take your baby to be neutered, ask the vet, && more than likely the vet will put him in an e-collar i'm sure, so he can't get to the stitches if there are any. no removing the poms doesn't make a difference in scent. neutering greatly reduces smell.

I just had one neutered this morning...pom left on. He was number 22 I've had neutered, all had their poms left on.

thanx for that link about wellness exams and neutering everyone seems to be saying try to have the poms left on which i think makes more sence i was just wondering why some vets choose to remove them all together.. and besides if i had his removed he'd probably be upset, he seems to enjoy licking them lol...
thanx everyone for the responses

Generally speaking, it's basically easier surgery for the vet to remove the entire scrotal sac. However, for the well-being of the glider (to avoid the higher risk factor of Self Mutilation) it's better to leave the sac intact and just remove the testicles from inside it.

When they remove the scrotal sac, they have to use sutures and/or glue to close the incision... The glider goes after them because they are foreign objects on their body shakehead
When they leave the scrotal sac intact, they usually use such a tiny incision that they don't have to use either glue nor sutures to close it and the glider is more apt to leave it alone thumb

Most vets, if not experienced with gliders, will take the poms unless you specifically ask them not to and explain the reason why... Even then, sometimes they insist on taking the poms. That's what happened with my Gizmo. I took him in, the vet agreed NOT to take the poms off, and then during surgery changed her mind tant Gizmo DID end up SMing and I had to have him in an e-collar for a few days post-op shakehead Needless to say, my vet got an earful! (And she also told me that she has now learned her lesson...)

I should explain that her reasoning for changing her mind during surgery was because his scrotal sac was hanging very low and far away from his body. Apparently she didn't know that they will do that if they are very warm. She was afraid that he would catch it on things in the cage and it would get ripped off if she left it on... All things considered, although I wasn't happy, I understood her logic and couldn't get too horribly upset with her. I did educate her about the warmth factor though...

Once the insides are gone, they really don't drop down that far. My two boys have never got it caught on anything - wow, what a painful thought!

Thank you! I was afraid of the sac catching on something and tearing. OUCH!

I've never heard nor read of that happening, so I really don't think it's an issue. I believe that it was an unfounded concern on the vet's part...

I am getting ready to have my boy neutered, & was wondering the same thing about the pom. I also would like to know if anyone has used any vets in or around Houston, Tx. for this?
