last night my dog must have gotten into my room. i noticed my hamster cage was empty and then saw my friendly little hamster dead on my bed. i was extremely sad and had my mom take care of her little body. then i thought i should check on the sugar gliders whos cage is right above the hamster's and sure enough my little stitch was on the top shelf dead. He had blood on his nose and his toes look like they were holding alot of blood ( probably just from laying on his stomach and the blood settling) I think my dog scared him to death. meeko was asleep in his pouch when i checked on him. Now ive been crying for a long time and dont really know what to do. Ive had these two brothers since they were babys. They are now over 2 years old. my dogs were already put back out in there kennel and meeko is in my lap sleeping after some lickity treats. i dont know what to do. I dont want meeko to get depressed and die because his brother isnt here and hes alone. should i get another glider after a while for him. a female? another male? how long to wait. I just dont know

I am so sorry Cassie , you must be heartbroken. Did Meeko get to see his brother? Sometimes it helps if they have that chance to understand and say goodbye. As soon as you are ready, I would get him another friend. Most times the male/females pair right up with no issues. Good luck, and again, I am so sorry!

My suggestion is to have your remaining glider checked by a knowledgable vet. Ask for a fecal float to check for a parasitic or bacterial illness. I have owned gliders for years and never had one die from being frightened. Since your glider was found on a shelf and not on the bed or floor makes me wonder if he may have been ill. It is also possible...if the hamster was ill the glider may have become ill from cross contamination or visa versa. It is possible the dog hurt the glider first...but, it would be worse for the remaining glider if his friend died from being sick. Therefor a wellness check will give you pease of mind that all is well with your remaining friend. For now...till you are sure your little glider is ok....give him lots of extra one on one attention for a month or so. Then if need be...try to find him a new friend...such as a neutered male.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. i agree that a vet check is in order and then once things come back clear and you are ready get him a friend. Male or female is up to you as lon gas he is neutered and you get another neutered male. Otherwise I would neuter your current glider (if he isn't already) and get him a female mate.

I'm so sorry for your loss and know that many here understand how you feel. As others have said definitely have your glider checked by a vet to rule out any possible illness. I've never had a glider die of fear but I know someone who has so I guess it's possible. The owner who had Wickit before me said her mate escaped from the cage and got stuck in a trash can. He was only in there one night and healthy before but it looked as if he tried all night to jump out of tall trash can and died because he was so frightened. Maybe it was a heart attack, no knows for sure. I just pray God will easy your pain and open a window.

I am so sorry for your losses. Not only for your glider but also for the loss of your hamster. It doesnt matter what kind of pet you own, when you loose one it is like loosing a piece of your heart as well. Please know that we are all sending good thoughts and prayers your way. I also agree with the vet check up though. And yes, when you are ready I would get another friend for your other male glider. Until than, please be sure to give him lots more attention and time.

I am so sorry about your losses. Try not to take it out on the dog, He doesn't understand. Pay plenty of attencion to stitch. He needs it now. And so do you. A new friend may be good, in a little while. Remember, they will both be waiting at the rainbow bridge.

oh that is so sad i am very sorry for u. i hope u and the remaining glider pull thru this ok. i to would suggest the remaining glider is vet checked. After that considering a new friend for him may be a good idea when u are both ready. I think its possible the dog may have mauled him enough to cause injury and he hid up on the shelf after where he then came to his injuries and passed, becuase it had happened to your hamster the same time and day. again i am sorry for your loss. Cynthia

he was completely in the cage. not a scratch on him except his little toes were beet red.. i think from the blood settling. I am looking into getting him a glider friend as the vet said he didnt see anything wrong with meeko. I just got back from my week long trip to earfalls ontario and he seems more active and happy then when i left but my mom ( who is afraid of him and all small creatures that is) actually pet him and played with him while i was gone. she was the one who was feeding him for me so when he peeked his head out the pouch she would pet his body through the pouch and would feed him strawberrys threw the cage bars. and all the close time my mom gave him granted it wasnt out of the cage time kinda payed off. he doesnt like out of the cage time much anyways. I tryed to let him out to play last night for like a hour and a half and he came out once jumped on my leg while i was on the computer catching up on email ran to my back then back to his cage to play in his wheel so i guess hes pretty much recovered and i cant wait to get him a buddy because im sure he will be about ten times better when he does!

I am so very sorry you lost Stitch and your little hamster. It is a doubly hard time for you. But on a brighter note, I am so very glad that Meeko is healthy!
