I would get him to a vet ASAP! That looks bad, but I'm no expert. Could be diet/stress related, but they get sick so fast. Hopefully, someone with more experience will come along soon. (If not, I would repost in the all too scary Emergency forum - looks like it might fit.)

Please take this glider to the vet. It is important that he be seen by a vet. This could be a sign of overgrooming or of self-mutilation. If this has been going on 2 weeks, it is a serious problem! I hate to sound rude, but you really should have taken this glider to the vet as soon as you noticed it.

Is he a lone glider or does he have cagemates?
What is his diet?

These questions can help determine the cause of the problem.

OK, I've been talking to Alex about the problems with his little boy for a few days now.
I've seen the pictures and I've also talked to Bourbon about him.
Some things that are relavent to the situation are:
Alex has only had his boys for approx. 2 months (he adopted them from another owner)
In the last two-three weeks, Alex & his family have been moving.

These two factors point in the direction of stress related hair loss. They've been re-homed and then moved again. They've also acquired a new cage and all new toys, pouches, etc. So they have undergone several signifigant changes in the last two months.
We have discussed that they seem to prefer eating their fruits & veggies over eating the BML as well.
Bourbon tells me that hair loss on the end of the tail is either stress or diet.......therefore, we plan to remedy the situation with BML only for a few nights to try and boost their vitamins & calcium as well as try to keep them as stress free as possible until they can acclimate themselves to their new environment.

Alex got a little extra worried tonight and it is very understandable.....we are working on his little boy's issues and should see some progress pretty soon.

Thanks for that update. That is definitely pertinent info.

Normally I'd agree (and I can't see the pic on this computer at work-it'll have to wait until I get home, so I'm going by the description)

BUT

If the skin is discolored then it's gone farther than stress or diet. Purple is the color you get right before necrosis (or dead, black tissue)- it would mean it's starting to deoxygenate in there, to put it simply, and tails are not very vascular...or wihout as much circulation as the rest of the body (same with fingers/toes). If it's discolored, I'd recommend vet give a broad spectrum antibiotic ASAP to keep it from (hopefully) progressing. If you see ANY black at all, don't wait to get to the vet-find at least one now you have 24 hour access to. Dead/dying tissue can not only necessitate amputation, it is incredibly painful (I've been thru it), and can quickly start a glider chewing at it.

Okay, I saw it. There's one place that's a bit concerning. Keep an eye on it CLOSE. ANY break in the skin, or darker coloring,or redness get into the vet asap for an antibiotic. Some of the color might be viewing the skin through the fine undercoat, which is actually shadow, though the darker line through it I'm not sure what is, since he doesn't seem to have black fur there? if that's SKIN coloration, it should probably be checked out.

I'd want to get it looked at, too, just to be save. That tail does look pretty bad...

I'm not really sure how we can help you. We aren't veterinarians and in my opinion that's what your glider needs right now.

For any newbies reading this, this is why it's SOOOOO important to save up at least $500 per glider for emergencies before getting them.

If there is no way you can get him to the vet than I would be concerned that he might start self-mutilating (SM).

Read this link and maybe get an e-collar made for him just in case he starts chewing at his tail.

SM and e-collar

And realize that gliders HIDE their pain. This is a survival tactic they use in the wild. So he may act like his tail isn't bothering him when in fact it is.

Otherwise, I don't have anything else to offer. But do keep us updated on how he is doing.

Don't panic. Just start saving for one if it's needed now. Like I said, after seeing the pic-it doesn't look that bad, and the skin appears intact. I was picturing a worse purple-what you've got may be shadow from the undercoat yet. DO get an ecollar ready in case, though, and some vetwrap for that tail should it look any worse (the bandage that sticks to itself-it'll keep the glider from curling the tail into the collar and still being able to get at it. For now I think you're okay. Just be aware there's a possibility it won't stay that way.

bigal23726 - I'm wishing you and your little one all the best! Keep us updated & just keep loving him. I agree that a vet visit would be important, but it also sounds like you have some glider experts helping you out. And it is obvious to me that you love him! hug2
