I was talking to some one who was looking for gliders in California, and she told me that if you have a permit, you can buy them. Is this right? I've never heard of it before. I've heard of how you could get a permit if you already had them before a certain time, but did I miss this other part? Thanks

From my understanding there is no such permit unless you are a zoo. I don't believe there is any legal way to own sugar gliders in CA.

[:"purple"] I don't have any first hand knowledge of the law in CA concerning permit; but from what has been posted on GC in the past, permits are available on an extremely limited basis. Apparently you have to have years of training and hands-on experience and be associated with a legitimate educational or research facility. People who just want to keep a glider or two as pets can forget it.

If you want specific details of the requirements, you should contact someone in the state government. Every state has a department that is responsible for that type of thing and they all have different names. You will just have to do a little research to find out exactly which department has the authority. [/]

I have also heard of getting a permit, but like it was stated before, its limited, to i believe zoos, and other educational facilities, i think also possibly rescues? But i could be wrong on that.

I e-mailed her a few days ago, and asked her if she knew that they were illegal in CA, this is what she wrote:

well some one else called someone and they called wildlife place and they said you could have them if you have a permit! thanks

Is there anything I should do? I wouldn't want her to get it, then if it got sick, not be able to find a vet to go to

[:"purple"] That is probably true; but it is not the WHOLE story. Permits are very hard to get. If you are thinking about selling to someone in CA, ask to see a copy of their permit before you sell. [/]

[:"blue"] Irresponsible breeders will sell to her and responsible ones won't. If she is determined to buy a glider, there is not much that you can do!! [/]

I saw her ad also and and told her they were illegal. I send her the link to the petition on GC (petition to gov of CA).

Gliders will never, ever be legal in CA. For goodness sakes, ferrets and GERBILS are illegal in CA.

I do happen to have a ferret. We've been fighting the ferret laws for years. We are finally getting close. However, I highly doubt gliders would ever (or should ever) be legalized.

I do have to say though... I personally know people with gliders here (very few people) and I do have a vet who is highly experienced with many exotics including gliders, ferrets, monkeys, foxes, and big cats (she used to work in las vegas) Anyway, it is possible to properly care for an illegal animal here... you just have to be the right kind of person, and know the right people. I certainly would never try to smuggle one in, but if you know people, it can be done within the state.

*rambling over!! haha*

Why do you say they shouldn't ever be legalized?

This ferret person has something against gliders, but vets in cali will treat them and there are no laws that state a vet can't treat them. Gliders are great , legalize!

My best friend works for a vets office. They see ferrets all the time (even board them sometimes) vets are exempt from the laws. Actually, my vet says it would be unethical NOT to treat them. Really, fish and game is not out looking for illegal gliders. Big breeding opperations are a different story.

True a vet can treat a glider in CA. Ca is the only illegal state that allows a vet to treat an illegal animal without putting the vets license in jeopardy.

I doubt Gliders would be legalized in CA anytime soon, but on the up side, if you are caught with a glider (this is just what I have been told from a few government agencies) you will get a nice big fine and 48 hours to get the glider out of state. Euthanizing does happen, so by no means do I support owning a glider in an illegal state.

Additionally yes you can get a permit in CA, but they are for educational purposes only. CA will not give one to just any yahoo from the street.

I also know of a breeder whom is sending gilders to CA. I have spoken with a lady who got a pair from our good old friend at CCW.

I AGREE LEGALIZE!!!!

I don't think they will be legalized anytime soon either. I just wanted to let everyone know that there are vets who will see gliders in CA. We are here to educate each other. What is CCW?

[:"brown"] CCW is short for a breeder whom is a terrible person, doesn't care about the gliders, and will do next to anything for a $. I would post the full name but I am not sure if I can, (rules).
If it is OK would a MOD please post it.[/]

specified and named marsupials such as sugar gliders, are banned in state of calif. there is no permit, no grandfather clause for owners prior to laws made. it is a violation to own, breed, transport gliders into calif. there are penalties, fines, and euthanized gliders when confiscated.

the www.api4animals.org is a site to view the legal cases, amended laws, codes or updated statues of any state on exotic animals or pets.
i have yet to see a case won for ferrets in the state of california. you can view these court case histories on this site, as well other exotic animals statues and cases.
alot of people may be offended of this site as its an agency that attempts to stop the exotic pet ownership all together, but what i use this site for is keeping up with the cases, the law changes, the amendments and what states are doing what. its an excellent resource info when it comes to the legalities of any state in regards to exotics as pets or laws.

correction and update california info 3/18/05,

there were permits issued in 1998, for gliders owned at that time,in calif.as companion pets. i also found out that like the ferret rescues that are in agreement with california to ship ferrets out, at the expenses and paid costs of shipping by calif. (not the expenses of the rescues), there are several glider rescues that are also working on making this same arrangements with calif. i am checking on a lead site about this info and contractual arrangements with ferrets and calif. have not yet check the validity of it, so will get back to everyone on that later.

Please see http://www.ferretsanonymous.com/rights.html for the truth about how ferrets and other "illegals" are handled in CA. They are not mass destroyed.

on the ccw mentioned in this thread..giggle. in my area, i have exotic vet noting and recording now where people purchase their gliders, and when there is a runnng record of illness, that is apparently excessive on medical records, the someone of importance will take notice when it is brought to their attentions. glider rights will get more and more established as more of public becomes aware of them and know about them, and more records of their kept conditions, health, needs are more recognized. as with puppy mills that became public awareness, so will glider mills & one day will be a law braking offense also. i will openly suggest to anyone not to buy gliders from this company, and have mentioned them by name on a few posts. when 3-4 week old gliders are taken from parents and sold, and when old breeders are sold, this is where i become very concerned and focused on a business of animal sales, not to mention selling in fairs, festivals, and public events to kids with the money in hand, is a little disturbing also.
sorry...just had to throw my two cents in there, if i offend, then i hope moderators will delete this post for me, giggle, giggle.
