Hello all. I wanted to see if I could get some feedback on Scrat's current diet. Having the E-Collar on, he refuses to eat anything he needs to use his hands for EXCEPT mealies which I hold with tweezers and he chews on. He is also not eating what I would consider to be "enough" so I have been using a syringe to feed him 2x a day. He is drinking TONS of water though so we have no problems with him becoming dehydrated. (He really loves having a little honey mixed in his water!)

Ok, so this is a list of the foods I have been feeding him in the last week or so:

*Healthy Times Organic Baby Foods*
- Island Fruit Jumble (Guava, Banana & Mango)
- Papaya
- Butternut Squash
- Baby Sweet Peas
- Oatmeal Cereal (Cereal, Apple & Banana)
- Sweet Potatoes
- Chicken & Pear
*Ensure, Wild Berry Shake* + Calcium Citrate

For each feeding, I either feed:
1) 3.5 cc of: Island Fruit Jumble, Butternut Squash, Oatmeal Cereal, Chicken & Pear
and 4.5 cc Ensure Wild Berry

OR

2)3.5 cc of: Papaya, Baby Sweet Peas, Oatmeal Cereal, Sweet Potatoes
and 4.5 cc Ensure

I have started feeding him twice a day because he does not like the taste of his antibiotics so I use the food right after to get the taste out of his mouth.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions!

*Oh yes, I have tried several versions of feeders which would allow him to eat with the cone on and have ended up returning them all with no luck!

The problem with collars is that gliders cannot grab their food so will either need to be handfed or provided with the trough-style feeders that they can get their collars around. Often times gliders will not eat as much when they are in the collar - just the stress of the illness/injury and being in a collar is a lot, and it can affect their appetite. It is great that he is drinking a lot.

What diet do you normally use? If using BML or another frozen diet, you can take it and water it down with some plain water or juice. It can easily to put in a syringe and handfed or (if Scrat decides to use the through style feeders) can be licked up.

The babyfoods are good to use. I also handfeed mealies, fruits/veggies and other favorites. Watermelon was a huge hut here with my last glider that was in a collar. It was easy to handfeed and provided fluids...plus it seemed to be the easiest thing for the glider to get down. My glider also liked being handfed Glideraide through a syringe.

Also, if he is not eating on his own - I would try handfeeding more often. I would handfeed several times throughout the night and during the day as well.

If you need any other help - just ask. And good luck hug2

I have been force feeding him for a few days now with a small syringe. I decided, hey, if he's not going to eat enough I will MAKE him eat enough! He looks skinnier already though and I'm trying as hard as I can to get him to eat more. He has learned a certain angle to turn his head in the e-collar that I can't get to his mouth with the syringe. That little bugger... :-)

I did try the trough feeders and couldn't get one that worked with my cage. I tried 3 different ones. And I feed him Priscilla's normally and it cannot really be put into a syringe unless I threw it in the blender and pureed it. But, I guess I will just stick with the baby foods, Ensure, and a few mealies for now.

Oh yes, as for handfeeding him, I tried putting all sorts of things on my fingers for him to eat but it made too much of a mess on his face. Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but the entire side of his face is open, infected, and still draining, and I didn't want to make it worse getting all kinds of food in there. Oiy. Hopefully tomorrow will fix a lot but I have a feeling we are going to be fighting this bone and tissue infection for a while to come. :-(

Thank you for all your suggestions :-)

Ms King, when is he going in for his operation? I seem to have not heard any follow ups on his condition, which I know is bad. Can't the vet see him and operate immediately??
