Just curious... I have two gliders, both girls, one is almost a year older than the other. I have noticed lately that they hiss at each other quite a bit, but usually when they first wake up. They seem to get along fine the rest of the time, are they just not "morning" gliders, or could there be another problem?
Thanks -

There are a few different reasons for hissing. The differences in the noises are subtle, but there is a difference. Some hisses mean "where are you?" Some hisses are a indication of impending aggression, sort of like a threat. Some hisses mean "stop that!"
What way are they hissing at each other? Do they hiss then crab and squabble? Or are they just communicating?
If they are a newly established pair, and since one is older than the other, they are likely establishing the pecking order, but they also could just be talking.
If they are getting out of hand and attacking each other, then I'd worry, but if they are just fussing at each other and hissing, that's not too uncommon, they'll probably get over it.
I actually started recording the noises that they make for my website, but it's gonna be awhile before I have all of the noises since they all try to be quiet when I'm around. There is a website that has a number of noises, but I can't remember which one it is..

Thanks everyone... very much!
It seems to be mostly hissing, but then some crabbing. I have also noticed that it only happens when they first get up for the night, and are eating. Some of the time they will eat together, then others one will eat and "stand over the food" while the other one sits on the side of the cage hissing. They sleep together, and seem to get along the rest of the time just fine. They have been together since April of this year but this only started within the last few weeks.
I just don't know what to do. I'm afraid that they hate each other, but then the sleep together, follow each other and play with no problems. Should I seperate them for a while? I tried seperate dishes but the same thing still happened. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Thanks for any and all advice! I appreciate it!

The other type of hissing we have is what Chip does to his mommy (and now to Murphy). It is a very long hiss. To Murphy it is like he is saying "Everything is OK... I'm right here." To his mom (who we visit occasionally) its like he's saying "I'm your little boy -- come to me."

[:"magenta"]i would definitely NOT separeate them, as that may depress them terribly. as long as they are not attacking each other (i.e. rolling in a ball together and crabbing), i would not worry too much about it.
you say you have used two food dishes. could they see each other? if so, they may still hiss. have you tried using two "glider kitchens"? that may help, as they cannot see each other with them. if you want to learn about kitchens, check out the housing/accessories forum (or send a pm to bmxgirl.) hope this helps. [:"green"]I have found that the type of hissing you are describing is their "Good morning!" hiss. They almost always hiss at each other when they first wake up. They also may hiss with a longer hiss when they are defecating. I would not separate them. They seem to be doing fine with each other. Crabbing at each other is also normal. Right now, one of my clans has been having a crabbing-fest with each other for the past 15 minutes. They are settling down for the day and Daddy is telling the babies it's time for bed - but they don't want to settle down. Again, this is normal - kind of like us with our kids! LOL! I'm sure your gliders are fine! If you are really that concerned about it, just continue to keep a close eye on them & make sure they don't attack each other (as Charlesex described above). There is normally a dominant glider who will seem to "hog" the food. As long as you are feeding an adequate amount, don't worry about it. The other glider will still get her fair share. Hope this helps. By the way, the site that lets you hear different sounds is right here on Glider Central - at the top of this page, click on "distinctive sounds".
