Ok I took my male glider to the vet about two and a half months ago. He had an absess and I got it drained. It was expensive and I was a wreck because I was so scared. Anyways it appears that he has another one. I am upset and depresses because of this and I want to know why is this happening. Am I doing something wrong. I have a female and their 7 week oop male joey. Please help I don't know what to do and my vet is not too experienced with gliders and especially not a glider with this problem

I am sorry you are going through this … both you and you little one … and sorry I don’t know … you should PM … Peggy / slrb … here on GC … she has a great vet that is willing to consult with other vets and might be able to work with your vet to figure it out…

First of all, was the absess in the same spot or a different spot? Also, is there any possible way he could have gotten a small cut from something in the cage or a bite and it get infected?

And I agree, you should consult with another vet who has more experience. I know I wouldn't pay a lot to a vet with little experience in gliders.

If the abscess is in the same area, then I'm not surprised at the recurrence. These types of infections are VERY difficult to clear up. With my Cricky, he had a recurring facial abscess. It wasn't cleared up until the 3rd abscess, when the vet was able to get a fluid & tissue sample that was sent out for C&S (Culture & Sensitivity). The C&S revealed that it was a specific type of Staph infection and also told the vet the exact type of antibiotic to prescribe for it to be cleared up. I had to go to a special pharmaceutical company where they made the antibiotic up specifically for Cricky. After that, it never recurred again...

So... have your vet try VERY HARD to get a fluid & tissue sample of the abscess that can be sent out for C&S, it will definitely be worth the time, trouble and expense.

Also, Peggy's vet is Dr. Tim Tristan. He is willing to consult with other vets about gliders and his number is 361-994-1145.

Please keep us posted on his progress...

Thank you all so very much for your help. He did do the c&s the first time and I had antibiotic for him. I went to vet and this guy gave me the antibiotic longer. He wants to do a follow up in a month to see if we must continue. I also got my boy neutered. Anyway this vet closed the wound under my boys chin whereas the vet before did not for drainage purposes. Should I be alarmed that this vet closed the wound? For both incisions he closed them with a type of adhesive. My boy bite the adhesive off of his wound. It is not bleeding and the vet reassured me that as long as it is not bleeding he should be fine and that I should just closely watch my boy. Now I am new to this all so if anyone has any advice please feel free. Also I wanted to know does anyone here have health insurance for their gliders and how does that work???? And how old does a joey have to be before you can get him neutered?? I am in New Jersey where is Peggy's vet located before I call and embarrass myself.

Peggys vet was given, I think, so you can have your vet call him and work with him over the phone, as a consulting medical professional, not to take him in to. Peggy and her vet is in Texas. I also have one that has worked with me with abscesses he can call:

Dr. Laurel Harris
2675 Parley's Way
Salt Lake City, UT 84109
(801) 485-4736

Suz is right that these can be recurrent and VERY hard to clear. If absolutely all of it isn't gone, they come back. My Riker had recurrent facial infections/abscess-it took Xrays, a year and a half on/off meds (with the longest course being 3 months of a combo that included Clavamox, Clindamycin, and Flagyl to finally bring it down for any lenght of time...followed by 1 week on, 3 weeks off Clindamycin/Flagyl twice daily for 6 months to keep it gone. He's finally been meds free for a year).

The reason they can be so hard is because an abscess forms a "pocket" inside the tissue...and it HAS to heal from the inside out. It can't heal from outside in, or that bacteria is trapped in there. You WANT it to drain, otherwise the bacteria have nowhere to go, and the antibiotic already has a hard time getting into the "pocket" to kill it. They heal slowly as new tissue fills in that pocket, making a smaller and smaller space for the bacteria to hide in. If your vet suspects outside bacteria may be getting in as well, a topical like neosporin to keep the outside tissue soft (provided it's not inside the mouth) and kill exterior bacteria, along with the oral meds, could help. Abscesses, because there is little to no air circulation, also frequently harbor anaerobic bacteria, which Flagyl works well on, the others not as good-which is why in recurrent ones, my vet often adds Flagyl into the mix, and lengthens course of treatment. HTH

My next question involves his other wound. He got neutered on the same day. The doctor put adhesive sutures on him instead of the stitches. My little boy tore it off so now all I see is a hole where his testicles were. Should I put neoporin on that or allow it to heal on its own? Also what should I look for in case it gets infected? Right now it looks fine.

You can put some plain Neosporin (without pain reliever) on it a couple times a day to help prevent infection. Keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't SM or overgroom it. Infection would be indicated with swelling, oozing or redness frown

Just wanted to add it's a good idea to periodically take a large cotton ball and go over the entire cage with it to see if it snags. Sometimes an abcess can be due to a tiny cut we can't see until it becomes swollen or infected.

If there are any snags, you can use a nail file to get rid of any sharp burrs.

I hope your baby gets well soon. It's soo scary when they get ill!!

HUGS to you and your baby
