Mage, ummm, ok, I admit I am only so so experienced with gliders(5 1/2 years) and neutering (just recently) but... the tie off method sounds painful to me. If it causes pain, it could lead to SM. I have never heard of tieing off with a glider. I am interested to hear other opinions about it. The idea kinda scares me.

I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

My vet attepted the tie of methoid with my little Smegal. He's not a canidate for sugery because he has seizures of unknow cause... Anyways, we tried it twice and twice he managed to remove the suture that was used to tie it off. On the other hand, he had it on for like 2 hours the second time and he never seemed like he was in much pain. He does tend to fidgit with things and grooms a lot, so I think he just groomed it off...

I'm a male and it kills me to hear something like that! I wouldn't do it of course, coming from a male's standpoint.

yeah.. painful indeed.. not to mention that it's not widely used or recommended.. I have heard so much bad stuff about tying off..not to mention that I heard it is illegal to do that if you don't have a permit/license to do it.. because it's like practicing medicine or something like that. I am definetly agains the tie off method.. Plus.. there can be complications... .. I'm gonna go to one of the other forums and dig something up...erg.. I don't remember which one it was.. now that's gonna bug me and I'm probably going to dig around for this for a few days and find it and have to come post again with it... so I will be back. LOL

I wish that were the case... It is totally legal to do yourself to your own sugar glider. There have been several reports of breeders neutering their own gliders by various methoids. However, if you find out a breeder has done to an animal you have already paid for, it is very much so illegal and you can press charges.

[:"blue"] The ISGA has a detailed article on the technique on their web site.....or at least they did last time I looked. Don't know if they recommend the procedure; but they certainly don't condemn it!!

It is my impression that the "tie-off" method is a fairly common and accepted technique for neutering cattle. Maybe someone from our great Midwest could comment?

Whether one can transfer the technique from cattle to gliders is a topic that will probably generate some spirited "discussion." [/]

Ok, well, I am in the midwest and my hubby was raised with cattle and that whole farm life. We were discussing the whole tying off situation. His opinion of the situation is this. Bulls that are tied off have no way to reach their testies with either their hooves or their mouth so even if they feel pain, they do not have the physical dexterity to reach the painful area to do anything about it. Gliders on the other hand can and since they tend to chew on areas that are bothering them he feels this could lead to SM unless the glider is kept in an ecollar the whole time. And even with the ecollar the glider still can reach the area with his hands and possibly cause damage that way. The ecollar could cause the glider to stress leading to bacterial problems. This whole tying situation just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

i know for cattle, (i grew up on a farm and have been around this kind of stuff my whole like), they use a rubber band sometimes that is very small and it stretches with this tool and goes over the testicles and is basically the same as "tying off". there is also this new thing out that you kind of wrench onto the testicles and attach it to a hand drill and it twists very fast, and they kind of just "disconnect". i saw a video for it in equine stable managament about a month ago. i guess it works well b/c it severes the tendons? but it's really controversial. but i do know there is little to no blood whatsoever. we have to help geld horses here all the time, but we don;t use that method. sorry this was offtopic!

Yep, we used to do this to our sheep in the FFA. The testicles would fall off in a few days. The sheep didn't exhibit any signs of pain, but they also couldn't get to the area. I wouldn't do it, too risky.

Moya, you may want to look into the tie-off method people use when there is no other choice. It basically involves tieing the testicles so that they are cut of from the blood supply, and after a few days they fall off.

This method should only be used when there is no other option, such as having a vet do the procedure, but I would recommend this over seperating your gliders.

Hi all,
I understand the practice that you mentioned but i find it extremely cruel, sorry for saying that... I know people that use a rubber ring on some breeds of dogs to make their tail fall off... Like in boxers and rotties...
I dont plan to neuter the males or separate them... At least for the moment... what i really like in this family is the fact that they all live together so well and they have a family and social structure... Which i know that is a very rare thing as some of you also mentioned.
What i might consider in the future would be to add another cage to that one and temporaly put the mothers with joeys in the other cage... but in a way that they still can interact together and see eachother.
I keep the faith that the joeys will come out of the pouches and they will keep getting along as well as till now
Ta ta,
Moya
