so here is the story- 2 of my three gliders (my bro/sis pair) have been vomiting infrequently. at first i thought they had bad fruit, and so did my vet. it was rather odd, because they would almsot take turns. one would vomit once or twice day for a few days, and then the other would do the same within the next day or two. so i got some antibiotics from my vet (after he did a fecal sample to make sure it wasnt a parasite). they have been on the antibiotics for about 7 days, then yesterday my neutered male (the brother) stated vomiting again. within the past two days he has vomitied tree times. he hasnt lost ANY perk, personality, or appetite. my female seems completely fine now.... so i have stopped the antibiotics as my vet reccomended - he thought the meds might be giving my boy some nausea (sp?) so my question is this- has anyone ever experienced something similar? or does anyone have any suggestions as to what tests my vet can do? i get the feeling that he may be stumped as to the cause. oh, and just a little background info- the pair is about 2yrs oop. and my intact male (1 yr oop) is completely fine other than some very minor over grooming, which i attribute as a stress reaction to his cage mates being ill on and off.

Perhaps you should get them checked for parasites. The only time I've had a glider throw up was when he was very ill and had a blockage due to infected glands and couldn't go to the bathroom. Perhaps have the vet give them an x-ray if you can afford it? Maybe intestinal blockage is the same. Feel their bellies for hard lumps of the 'blockage' it can be caused by anything. Pellet food can cause it, um a glider chewing a piece of plastic and swallowing it. Gliders, as you probably know, don't show signs of illnesses until it's very severe. I really have no idea, those are just some suggestions...

I don't know what could be causing the vomiting, but your vet can call and consult with Peggy's (Srlb) vet to see if he has any ideas: Dr. Tim Tristan 361-994-1145

If they're pooping and peeing fine (not able to poop would suggest a blockage), have the vet run both fecal float and direct smear to test for parasites-those can cause it. A bacterial infection that affects the gastrointestinal tract can also, and there are cases when neither may show up on testing, depending on where it is. In that case the vet might want to shotgun treat for the possibility to see if there is improvement in symptoms.

thanks for the suggestions Xfilefan- they are pooping and peeing just fine. that is why the vet thought they had an infection and gave me a general antibiotic. he has already tested fecal samples for parasites- i hope they were right, and i hope there isnt a parasite hiding somewhere... the fact that my female seems totally fine confuses me. so i will be calling my vet again on tuesday to see what he suggests- who ever i talked to last over there wasnt much help. thanks for all the advise and support guys! and thanks for that number suz- i will have my vet give dr. tim a call if he really is out of ideas

I just wanted to say that I went thru the same thing with my one glider about a month ago. One day out of the blue he was up in the middle of the day vomiting. I of course paniced! I talked with Bourbon, she gave me wonderful advice and then Xfilefan was wonderful...she even consulted with my vet (who has no clue about treating sugar gliders) The suggestion was as Xfilefan mentioned, check for parasites (fecal float, Bacterial CNS, urinalysis) The vet put my glider on Clavamox for a urinary tract infection. He hasn't had any problems since. Your doing the right thing, ask, and act! I sure hope it's nothing serious, and he will recover from this quickly. Keeping him in m,y prayers.

Are you sure they are not just spitting up the undigestable pieces of their diet - with the pellets, it could be quite a bit.

Vomiting in a gliders is scary because unlike cats and dogs who may just chew on some grass and vomit, gliders don't do it unless they are truly sick. I've been through it with my gliders several times. With mine, they responded to treatment with metronidazole, which is an antibiotic that works well on parasites such as trichomonads and giardia. One clean fecal test does not rule out these parasites. They don't always "shed" the organisms. One afternoon my glider tested 3+ out of a possible 4 on the number of trichomonads in her stool. The vet tech told me grade 4 means you almost can't see any poo because there are so many organisms there. The very next morning, I took a sample in to my cat and dog vet (more for educational purposes so she could get used to testing with gliders) and she couldn't find a single one. She's a pretty good vet, so I know she knows how to properly run a fecal test, so that just shows how quickly it can change. The last time I had a glider vomitting, she was kind enough to do it at the vet's office and we were able to take a sample of the vomitus for the vet to send off for culture and sensitivity. It showed an overgrowth of klebsiella, which is a bacteria. A C&S can be very helpful to point your vet in the right direction in finding what antibiotic to use, but it takes several days to sometimes over a week to get the results back. I would recommend getting yourself a tiny syringe, like the ones diabetics use for insulin injections and keeping it handy so if you notice them vomit, you can collect it and take it in right away.

okay, is vomiting a comon side affect of pelleted food? it cant be healthy if it is... they should put that on the lable in really big bold letters... i should think that if it were just "stuff" they didnt need that it would go straight through their system. peeperkeeper- thanks for the info. i will see if i cant collect vomit. at this point it has become significantly less frequent, so it will prove to be a challenge. and i will definately take a sample in to my vet again.
