I've been worried for a while....The color in/near her pouch is rust color but she's a grey/blonde! I took a closer look and the nipples are still hanging out ((suggies oop for a while now, eating on their own)) and the skin in the pouch next to the rust color fur is kinda blueish. I would have gone to the vet but when I got her/them my mom yelled "NO vet BILLS!" She won't even let me fix my male unless someone else pays for it T.T ANYHOWZ does anyone have a pic of a pouch infection that I can compare to? I know it sounds REWALLY weird...but it would help a lot. Thank ^^ Love always, Austi

Austi, Holly is trying to say that suggies are notorious for supplying their owner with vet bills and quite often large vet bills (due to them being active at night- when most vets are closed, they hide symptoms by nature, and they are exotics which means specialized). Holly please correct me if this wasn't waht you meant. The remark about the rock I take to mean is that the only pet out their that won't have vet bills is a pet rock. You really need to get her to the vet of you are concerned. Also, I think most would recommend that you get the male neutered. Maybe you could sell future babies to pay for the nueter a ways down the road? I don't breed my rescue suggies so I can't help you with a picture. I know that pouches can become inverted especially when there have been babies in them. I think they can become discolored as well. Is there any kind of smell coming from the pouch? You sound like you are trying to do the best by your babies. I know that there have been other posts about inverted pouches and I think at least one of them had pictures. Can you use the search option at the top? I would but I have to go finish cleaning a bird cage.

My two gliders both had pouch infections, but neither has had babies. Also, their pouch wasn't rust or blueish color so I'm not sure what that is, unless she does have an infection and it's just further along than mine were. If there is an infection, it will take anitbiotics in order to clear it up. You should at least call an experienced glider vet and see what they have to say. And I agree with Holly on the "no vet bills" is not synonomous with gliders quote! Even if they don't show signs of illness, they should have wellness exams at least once a year and preferably every 6 months.

Since you suspect a problem and possible pouch infection, the only way to know is to have a vet examine her. Also, I see in your signature that you have the mom, dad and two joeys and that you plan on keeping the little female joey. In order to keep them all in one cage, Dad MUST be neutered before the joey reaches 4 months out of pouch to prevent Dad from raping her and inbreeding with her. Perhaps we can help you locate a vet that would be willing to work with you.

one of my girls has a rust colored pouch and I have taken her to the vet about this before, and she tells me it's just the way she is, and I agree with her. she is by far the ONLY one I have ever heard of that is like this. Since there is a bluish color, I would say, get her to a vet as soon as you can. There are some that are willing to work out a payment schedule with you. Keep us posted, K?

Not all pouch infections look the same, but there is a picture of one on my web page about Symptoms of a Sick Glider - scroll down until you see the right caption, it's the last picture before the "Hygiene & diet" section... Now, even if yours doesn't look like that picture (which was an extreme case), your glider still needs to be seen by a vet right away. There are two concerning factors in what you have described: 1) the bluish skin, 2) the distended teats. Neither of those things should be occuring. The rust colored fur around the pouch could be due to scent-gland staining. I have occasionally had this with my females, although never severely so. As others have already told you, your mother's expectation of "no vet bills" is unrealistic with any pet, much less with sugar gliders. As a pet owner, it is a responsibility to obtain proper veterinary care when needed in addition to annual wellness checks. No one likes vet bills, but they are part of our responsibility The alternative is not obtaining vet care for her and the possibility that, if it IS in fact an infection, she will die I'm not trying to be harsh here, just spelling out the truth... Could you perhaps work out an arrangement with your mother where you would work off the bill? If you would like me to talk to your mother, you can have her call me at 440-953-0904... I promise I would be diplomatic in discussing it with her Please keep us posted on your glider's progress.

All animals may need vet care at some point in there life. It's part of responsible ownership. This baby needs to go. Perhaps show your mother the answers in this thread and maybe she will take you. Most vets can work out a payment plan with you.
