Im so devastated my poor little Gagey is sick again He seemed to be recovering so well and then he just stopped eating all over again. He dropped about half his weight. We were at the vet yesterday and he had a blood test done and the vet checked him over and he has a very very high temperature. I dunno how he keeps getting sick, his cage mate Pandi was checked over by the vet and is in perfect health. Hes on 0.03ml of baytril twice per day and because he wont eat hes being fed solution using a stomach tube. I really hate using it though because i feel like im chocking him, but i really dont know what else to do. Im scared that i'll end up damaging his throat. I got him to eat a few crickets yesterday but he wouldent eat any today. I just finished giving him his medication and feeding him with his tube and he looks terrible. He looks worse than ever, hes just sitting there. Its breaking my heart, im to worried to go to bed. I'v been crying my eyes out for hours, i really dont want my little baby to die.

I tried the chicken but he wouldent touch it, all hes interested in is sleeping. Im so worried about him, could he just be full right now? mabye thats why hes not eating at the moment? is there any kind of protein in liquid form that i could give him using the stomach tube? i'v been giving him sugar glider nectar also to help get him better. I hope he starts eating soon

i would nt force him to eat he will be ok if he dont eat for a day. have you tried ensure the vanilla regular ensure. bloodwork is not necessary have a urine culture and sensitivity done and direct fecal float with a gram stain. you dont have to bring him in for these tests just collect his urine in a sterile cup and also the fecal and run it down to the vet. i would ask the vet for baytril and flagyl which will cover parasites and any bacterial issues

Have you tried anything like Hi protein Ensure (provided he isn't dehydrated) or boost..and see if he'll eat it? I've also used BML (if dehydrated, water down BML a little and use that-works better without the wheat germ by syringe also). All 3 can be forcefed a number of times a day orally by needleless syringe as well-without using a tube. It's slower going, but I've done it on a few critically ill gliders. With the blood test...what did they test for? Mine that lost weight like that had a failing liver/gallbladder-it showed up on a full blood panel (they took blood from his chest under anesthesia to get enough to test) but there can be a number of things that can cause anemia (refusal to eat), and if urine hasn't come up with any abnormal results, a blood test would be the next step to find out what's going on. This thread explains a bit what they look for in those tests, and what different results can mean, though it's not all inclusive, and a vet's knowledge is essential for any diagnosis based on results: http://www.sugarglider.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/285263/page/1#Post285263

We did the fecal float but not a urine test. It all showed up normal. When he did the blood test he let me watch, he had a lot of trouble getting blood from Gage, he tried his jugular in his neck but his glands were to big to get the needle in right. He got a little blood from his tail and his leg. Everything showed up pretty normal except he had some weard blood cells (i forget what they are called) which are indicators of malnutrition, but i saw that coming as he hasent eaten normally in a while. We dident get enough blood to do a proper kidney test. I feed darcys diet so i give him ensure, thats what i'v been giving him with the tube because he wont eat it on his own. The vet gave me the stomach tube cause it was easier, its near impossible to force feed gage with a syringe. Before i took him to the vet thats what i was doing and it took me hours and i couldent get any in him. He struggles like crazy, and when i do get it in him he just spits it back out even when i hold him steady for a few minutes after. I would have to hold him in a towel for a hour or so after wards because he would be covered in what ever i was feeding him and i dident want him to stay wet and get a chill. The tube works much better i just feel so bad when i use it hes on baytril, i just dunno what else i could do, hes been sick for months now the vet said to give him the baytril for 10 days, how long sould it take before it kicks in? His temp. was 36 or 37 i think and its susposed to be 32. Could he have Pneumonia?

If you don't see significant improvement within 3-4 days, it's time to change meds, as what he's on isn't working. Also note that long periods without food can cause fatty liver and liver dysfunction (as little as 3 days)-so if they can get a blood test done for liver enzymes to measure function it might be a good idea. That can also help with other conditions. The thing about this condition with the liver is it's treatable with meds and diet. We took blood from Chronos from the vena cava in the chest (to the side and a tiny bit below the chest scent gland)-in order to get enough for a panel-it's rare they can get enough from anywhere else. My vet would be happy to consult with yours on it if you decide to do that, and I still have the info on Chronos' meds and diet changes when we thought that was his problem, before we found out about his gall bladder being diseased in addition to the liver. Here's the info, if you think yours might want to consult: Parrish Creek Veterinary Clinic Douglas W Folland, DVM 86 North 70 West Centerville, UT 84014 (801) 298-2014 Keep us updated-I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Just wanted to let you know that I'm still praying for your little baby! What I've done with my two when they were on medication, was either mix their meds in with a tiny bit of yogurt or baby food fruit. Just enough to get the medicine mixed in good. Or another thing I've done was "inject the medicine into a wax worm" if your little guy likes mealies or wax worms this works great. Just some ideas. I sure hope things improve.....

I'll give it a few days, if i call so quickly after just seeing the vet he'll tell me to give it time anyway. If i dont see any improvement i'll get a urine test and another blood test done. Thanks for the help everyone! im really really greatful. I'v been on pins and needles the last 3 months with my little Gagey. Thanks for the info Jen, i'll pass it on to my vet. Just one question, how do i collect urine from a sugar glider?

If you can get a "sterile" syringe from your vet, you can wipe an area clean on a counter top with alcohol, set him down on the disinfected area and see if he will potty. You can try and stimulate him to go by lightly rubbing his area with a warm wet q-tip. Once he's tinkled, draw the urine up into the syringe. If you can get a urine sample a day or two at the longest before going to the vets, you can put the syringe in a ziploc baggie and keep it in the frig. Be sure the tip on the syringe is on tight.

The vet can get a sample either by having him pee in a container (like a scale) or on the table, or by taking it directly from the bladder via syringe under anesthesia (usually the purest sample, without any contamination from the cloaca). If YOU have to collect it, I have sterilized a glass plate (using boiling water, and air drying), woken them up and put them on it to pee (make sure it's cool!), then sucked the pee up into a clean, new needleless syringe to take in. Any sample collected must be refrigerated immediately (put the syringe in a baggie), and gotten to the vet within 12 hours (maximum) of collection or less, or it won't be viable.

Thanks guys! just one more question, what does the pee test for? like, will it indicate liver/kidney problems if there are any?

A urinalysis can give the vet a lot of information. To do a ua you look at the color and appearance of the urine. Amber colored urine could indicate liver problems or blood in the urine. Next the specific gravity is noted. This tells you how concentrated the specimen is. Then the dipstick is performed. This is a little plastic stick with squares of chemicals on it. Ph,presence of blood, white blood cells glucose, ketones, protein, urobilinogen are some of the things tested on the stick. If the square for white cell and protein is positive and ph is high, this usually means a bacterial infection. If just the protein is high, it could mean the kidneys aren't functioning properly. If urobilinogen is positive it could mean liver problems. The urine is then centrifuged and looked at under a microscope. The presence of white cells, red cells, bacteria, etc. is noted. Too many white cell and presence of bacteria would indicate a urinary tract infection. There is even more info the vet can learn by doing a ua-I could go on and on! Sorry, I'm a lab tech- if you want to know any more let me know! I hope Gagey feels better soon!
