Hi there everyone, I've been doing alot of researching on sugar gliders and after pouring through these awesome forums now feel really confidant in our decision (my fiance and I) to get a pair.

After doing alot of reading on their diet I had a question regarding the wheat germ: there are wheat germs that are labeled as either plain or sweetned with honey. Is there a significant difference between the two? Would it affect the need to add more/less honey in the BML mix (depending on if it was plain or the honey sweetned kind?). And also, what is the significance of using honey in the BML mix that is raw, honeycomb, or unfiltered?

Any help would be incredibly appreciated!

Welcome to GC! Congratulations on your decision to bring gliders into your life!! How exciting for you!

Just get the plain wheat germ.

You don't want to use raw, unfiltered, or honeycomb honey because they are not pasteurized and may contain things that could be potentially harmful to the gliders. Just the plain ol' stuff that comes in the little bear is what you're lookin for

Ah fantastic, thank you so much for replying to my post as well as the warm welcome!

My fiance Ron and I have been considering it for quite sometime and now we are getting our babies on/around the 29th of this month.

We were going to go with a prefab enclosure, but we never go little when it comes to things so we took the newly burned out projection television, completly gutted, sanded and scrubbed the interior. We leveled the floor and tiled the interior (considering how they like to throw their food )removed the backing and attached the PVC-coated mesh to the back, now all that remains to be done is to install the doors. It probably sounds more ghetto than it looks, but when its finished they'll be coming home to a 4.5 x 3.5 x 1.75 foot enclosure.

Again, if it weren't for all of the great info on these boards and the supportive nature of everyone here I would have definitely had a goot three to four months more research ahead of me.

WOW!! Your enclosure sounds AWESOME! You'll have to post some pics when you get a chance, I'd like to see that. A friend of mine used an old gun cabinet for her cage (just replaced the glass with hardware cloth), & it's pretty cool...the projection tv sounds like it'll blow the gun cabinet outta the water though! (no pun intended)

Kretschmer wheat germ with the red label is the one usually used by most. Contrary to popular belief this is not pure or crude wheat germ. It is marketed by Quaker Oats company and is fortified with vit E. However from the overall numbers on the nutrients it looks better than the break down on crude wheat germ. And is actually better (healthwise) than the jar with the honey added. BTW it is available at WalMart stores.
