How old is she? My boy went through a phase of not eating when I first got him (he was young) I force fed him and gave him subQ fluids to get him through, because they couldn't find anything wrong. It lasted for 2 weeks or so, I was terrified, but then he, just as suddenly, decided he was hungry and has been fine ever since. If you are going to try with her, I would force feed and see if maybe she'll perk up. She might have gotten herself so weak that she isn't able to eat on her own anymore.

She's 7; not a youngster anymore but not considered "old" quite yet... I'm hoping they can force food and get her going again and I will be able to keep her going.

Has the vet run any tests?? Such as a urinalysis or a fecal float or smear?? Just looking her over and pronouncing her healthy doesn't do much. They need to look for infections or some reason she is not eating. There is OBVIOUSLY something wrong, and all possibilities need to be explored. She may also need Sub-Q fluids with D5W solution if she is dehydrated and her electrolytes are off. It really doesn't sound like they are doing enough to help her!!

have the vet give you some baytril and flagyl which will cover a number of illnesses. 7 is not too old. try to get protein chicken turkey yogurt ground beef first and foremost with a little calcium on it it sounds like a bacteria when they are sick they need protein.

Has the vet gotten liquids in her or Sub Q'd her? She has to be hydrated for any kind of chance. We have gliders 8 years old that act just as young as our joeys. It's not her age. Something is going on. Does she have any other cagemates? If not, she may need a friend to help with depression since she lost her mate. I pray she gets well and everything turns out okay.

7 is definitely NOT old for a glider! The vet needs to give her sub-q fluids (D5W solution) and needs to check her over thoroughly for infection (parasitic or bacterial) by running Urinalysis, Fecal Float & Smear. He also should check for the possibility of Hypocalcemia... in her condition, she is too weak for a blood draw, but they may be able to take xrays without putting her under anesthetic since she's so weak. Even if nothing shows up, they should put her on a shot-gun course of a broad-spectrum antibiotic such as Baytril and on an oral calcium supplement such as Neocalglugon... Please continue to keep us updated on her progress.

No cage mates; she actually beats up other gliders except for her old mate. I'm going to get some Batryl before I take her home. They were waiting until today to do the fecal test since she was so weak; they wanted to get more fluids in her first. I am going to call this morning and check to see how she did last night...

Her stomach may not be able to take much food at a time after 6 days of not eating. Baby steps forward are still steps forward.

Has the vet given you a diagnosis as to what the cause is of her not eating? Have they run tests on her yet? I'm concerned that there are no path reports on her yet. Since they have been slow with getting food/fluids into her, and now starting her on solids without determining the cause just doesn't sound right. If they haven't run any tests, I would strongly suggest that they do so before sending her home. Please let us know.

She is home w/ strict directions Batryl every 12 hours for 10 days to clearup anything that could be there that they didn't find. Carnivore care made liquidy at least 3 times a day more if she doesn't take much at her feedings. All organic 100% carrot juice since she is drinking more of that than any other fluids and I am to contine to offer her solid food on top of that to ease her back to eating on her own. She rode home w/ me in my shirt and slept there the whole way when I got home we both took a nap on the floor by her cage LOL. I gave her the Batryl at 4:00 so I'll be getting up at 4:00 am for another round. She is eating the carnivore care under protest ( Idon't think it tastes good) but she scarfed down 2/3 of a mealie on her own as well as a big piece of watermelon... she trotted around the room for a bit and then back to bed. That was the most I have seen in a while. I have to say it really touched my heart to see her ears a little more perky and to watch her eat again. I feel she made more progress just being back at home w/ Mommy but she needed a little help from the vet. She apparently touched the heart of the nurses there too. It's going to be a long road but I think she is gonna make it just fine. I definitley could use another nap right now but I nap between feedings and all will be fine.

well now she is on semi liquid nasty stuff but I usually give her grapes, apples, corn, carrots, lean meat, peanuts for treats, peas, yogurt (all natural) and I'll mix in random things like a little mac n cheese if I am eating it or a piece of a chip here or there... small things that I can monitor and I don't let others feed her to make sure peole don't sneek in stuff I don't allow. Fatty stuff. I do admit I should mix up her routine more often than I do to keep her from being bored of her food. That is my vowe to her.

Taylor~ I'm glad to hear that Heidi is home and is showing some slow signs of improvement. My concern would be that she is not on an approved steady diet. From what you said, it seems like she gets fruits and veggies and lean meat, but a little of this and a little of that. Is she getting vitamins? What kinds of meat does she eat? Please look at the approved diet link at the top of the page. It shows many diets to choose from. They are staple diets that have vitamins and minerals that the glider needs, along with fresh fruits, veggies and insects too. I hope she shows more improvement as the days go by!!

Well I have tried some in the past and gotten it flung at me so I stopped doing it. BUT I am willing to try again. I just went out yesterday and bought all the stuff again...except the wheat germ i forgot that. I have now gotten her to eat a small amount on her own as well as what I am force feeding so we are on the right track :-)

I'm glad you are getting something into her. Even if she isn't happy about it, at least she's taking it. I know how exhausted you must be, just know you have all kinds of moral support here! I hope she keeps getting better and better!
