Paige and Cole are 6 weeks today and they have not begun eating anything on their own (mom is still nursing them). Should I be concerned? They are growing and look great, but thought by now they would be eating other things. I try hand feeding different things, too, and they sniff and that is it.

I found with my hand raised baby that she would not even try food at all till she was 7 weeks oop and then she would spit it out and want formula again so they should start trying foods on their between 6-8 weeks oop but they will still turn to mom more often than not especially if she is willing to let them.

My hand raised baby was 7 weeks also. What I did was put a dish in her starter cage that had 4 holes (it was actually a very heavy glass votive candle holder so she there was no way she could tip it and it was on the floor of the cage)

I put her formula with rice cereal in one, formula with leadbeaters mixed half and half in one, veggies and fruits in one and leadbeaters mixed with yogurt in the last one.

I started this at 6 weeks and she would nibble at the stuff with formula and eat all the formula. I was worried but by week 7, she started tasting everything and by week 9 she was a piggy. smile

Each joey does things differently - some will begin to eat as early as five weeks oop, but some won't start until seven weeks...

I wouldn't be worried yet because in all likelihood they are actually already eating on their own but you just haven't "caught" them at it yet wink Most joeys will start to sample their parents' foods at about 5-6 weeks oop. With my joeys, I oft-times don't "catch" them eating until they are about 7-8 weeks oop. If you don't see them eating on their own within another week or so, then you can try taking them out of the nesting area and placing them by the food bowls to see if they'll start eating (if they're not too nervous). Also, they will continue to nurse from their mother until they are 10-12 weeks oop, if allowed to do so by the mother. So, just make sure you put plenty of food for both the joeys and the parents in the cage each night and all should be fine hug2

I did not know this. All the more reason to keep them with their parents longer than 8 weeks! Thanks Suz! laugh

I actually had one little guy who nursed until he was 14 weeks oop blush I was amazed that his mother allowed him to for so long... by that point she had two more joeys oop and another set in pouch shakehead Where she managed to come up with enough milk for 5 joeys still is a mystery to me dunno roflmao

Thanks Suz! I guess they could be eating during the night, but will never try anything if I offer it. They come out and play all night, though, so I guess they could be. Last night, I heard Piper making 'that noise' again (the one she made when they were younger) and I am wondering if that is her now beginning to 'push them off' and starting to wean them. They are almost as big as she is! Will get more pics and post them!

Thanks everyone, will keep you posted.

I believe I've read you just need to add extra bml. I'm still new at things though so I'd see what others come along to say.

I believe that is right (I don't feed BML). I am sure others will chime in.

Once the joeys are old enough to start eating on their own, just add more BML to the parents' food bowl. I usually just give a double-portion so that I know the mother has plenty for milk production and there's enough for the joeys, too laugh
