O.o

So, the licky treats were working just great and dandy until a couple of days ago.

And then the female started biting..she has been my problem from the beginning, but I thuoght I was amking progress! And since then I have recieved SEVERAL bites..three today when I got up the courage to ask again. She doesn't crab much anymore, just bites. She'll lick sometimes, but more often than not she goes for my fingers with an open mouth - half the time I get scared and pull my finger away at that point.

...what do I do? I am TRYING to keep my finger there and all, but when I do she just bites more...

I thought I was doing so well?

Sary

Make sure you keep replacing the licky treat on your finger. Allow her to take three licks then dip your finger to reload on more licky treats. Sometimes, when they finish the licky treat on your finger they'll bite down into your finger in hopes to get more goodies. See, in the wild, gliders will bite down into tree limbs and remove the bark so that they can get into the tasty resin/gums/fluids in the tree. Your glider is perhaps thinking that if it bites down into your finger that it'll get more licky treats. Try that and hopefully she should calm down her biting. Eventually, she should associate your finger with the bountiful oozing tasty juices that spew forth from your finger tip that she no longer has a need to bite deeper into to get more.

Also, she could be going through her teenage biting phase. Gliders will be extra nippy when they are joeys and when they are teens. Hopefully, it will pass.

Hope this may have helped you!

Great advice!

I thought I heard about suggie slaves that hiss at the gliders when they bite. It has something to do with acting like the adult glider with a nippy joey. Anyone else heard anything about this method?

Good luck with your little one!

Well, she is 10 months old, actually, so ...yeah. I do replace it (Quite often) so as to prevent this biting and it's often right after that that she will bite.

Jenny, the hissing noise is more of a Psssst that mother gliders will make at their joeys when they're doing something wrong. That's all I did to get my gliders to stop biting.

My gliders went through a nippy phase between 10 and 12 weeks oop in which they just would always bite me- not to hurt me or draw blood, but just because . It was annoying, but it did pass

Also, it's sometimes impossible to keep your hand/finger there to take the bite, so it's understandable if you move it. If you do move it, though, make sure to put it right back where it was. This is so they know they aren't accomplishing what is intended by biting.

Good luck

Why don't you try raisins or something that isn't on your fingers, but still in your hand? That may work better for both of you. I'm no expert but I have herd that some gliders do bite with liky treats so you might try like a piece of dried fruit. They still get the "hand friendly experience" but without so much blood shed.

Someone on here recommended saying a firm "NO". I thinks its working with my little Cody. He stops and looks up at me. I don't use any treats or any kind of food outside of his cage. It's so funny - - - when I have a treat for food for him, he beats me back to his cage. It's never hard for me to put him up after play time.

I also use treats I can hold. For miracle I started w/ a big treat and shed crab while eating it from my hand. Then I moved to smaller and smaller treats that brought her closer to my fingers, then licky treats. What also works is when she'd crab for me to draw back my finger or lunge to bite, I started holding it just out of reach and at first shed crab until the got a wif of the aroma from the treat..then she'd kinda sniff her way to my finger...

Grape halves work well too, you can turn them inside out and put over the tip of your finger. (like a thimble) I'm a woosie girl, I just can't take the bites and I do pull away but I always go right back to what I was doing so they know I'm not going to stop just because they tried to bite me. I also tell them no in a firm but not loud voice and use the psssttt sound. They seem to respond more to it then the NO. Good luck and just have patience.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

It IS hard to keep your finger there but you must. I have gotten a couple million bites in the past week from my new guy Xander, but I think he's finally tiring of it. Tonight when I fed him he actually came out of his cage and onto me, looking for some applesauce. Just be persistant with the licky treats!

I'm new at this too but i heard if you have a real bad biter you can put on your finger the same stuff you put on childrens fingers to keep them from biting their nails... not sure what it's called though!

That's a good idea - except she's biting me when she's going to lick applesauce off of my fingers So i mean...hm. Yes. I shall persist

I was having a bad time of it for a while too. My breeder suggested putting the treat (applesauce, yougurt, or nectar) in a plastic bottle cap and holding it in the palm of my hand. This also seems to help them get used to sitting in/on your hand.
