Suz, I knew you could help more than I could on that one! hug2 I didn't even think eye infection, got the word 'cataract' stuck in my head and that was it. crazy This is some good info to pass on to her vet.

This is a picture of my Pika from this past November - with the fully developed cataract in her left eye. Although we had many recurrent infections, the doctor was able to save the eye although Pika was completely blind frown

The important thing is that Pika had someone who took amazing care of her inspite of the bad things that she went through, and i'm sure that Heidi will have that same care! Hoping she is well soon!

Jen, although cataracts were the end result, the beginning of the problem was eye infection frown

Since this glider is already ill, that may be what's going on here, too, since the cloudiness just showed up today. I hadn't realized it could happen that fast. frown

With Pika, it literally showed up overnight - very shocking and a puzzlement to the vet at first ohwell Keep in mind that with Pika, she had already been under treatment for HLP with antibiotics, calcium supplement, etc... so to have another infection show up while she was already undergoing treatment was a surprise to all of us blush I will try to do a search of my old files tomorrow to see if I can find the information about the specific antibiotics that were used for her - I want to say that the oral one was SMZ/TMP, but I'm not 100% sure about that dunno I do know (because I still have the bottles) that the eye drops prescribed were:
1) Prednisolone Acetate 1%
2) Tri-Thalmic Solution

Suz, you mentioned glaucoma and an infection. Either could cause this sudden clouding of the eyes. Either could also be treated and still save the vision or cause total blindness. In either case, quick treatment is extremely important to save the vision.

Taylor, in either case, it is not necessarily life threatening, unless it is a systemic (whole body) infection just showing up in the eyes. That seems unlikely since she's been on Baytril which is a new and strong antibiotic. Keep your chin up and take her in to the vet first thing in the morning. If I were you, based on the time they took last time to get to her (I would have been LIVID! tant ) I would stay until they check her out.

I'm not sure if they can measure intra-ocular pressure in a glider or not to be able to tell if it's glaucoma. I'm also not sure which type of anti-glaucoma medication they would prescribe, but there are many available to use for people. In people, they are almost always topical, meaning eyedrops.

Good luck! I hope everything goes well.

*edit: Suz, you also mentioned that Pika was being treated for HLP at the time. Since Heidi hasn't been on a proven diet with supplements until recently, I wonder if she could have HLP and if it could have some ocular complications associated with it. Suz, have you ever heard of any other HLP gliders having eye problems besides Pika? Taylor, did they check her for HLP? The test would have been x-rays or maybe a blood test.

Sunny,
In Pika's case it was both infection and glaucoma (with the glaucoma secondary to the infection). They did do contact tonometry to check the intra-ocular pressure - which meant she had to be anesthesized while they did it frown I don't know if the eyedrops they prescribed are normally used to treat glaucoma in humans, but they are what worked for Pika smile

That's amazing, Suz! I'd like to see that tonometer! Some peoples' eyes are so small it's hard for me to get a reading with a regular one. I can only imagine what it's like doing a glider. At least their eyelids wouldn't get in the way like they do with people. Did you see them check it? Did they use yellow dye and a blue light, or a metal instrument that they set on the eye? Sorry, just curious.

Did you see my edit on the previous post?

Not to interrupt (I'm finding all the information coming up here fascinating-no disrespect to the seriousness of the situation), but this glider and Suz' both were on antibiotics when the sudden cloudiness appeared. Could what they have/had be resistant to the meds they are on when it happened (the cloudiness), and possibly causing it to go out of control because of that? You'd think there'd be NO improvement if it was just the wrong med, but that's not the case. Might be something to ask the vet.

Sorry, back to the eye discussion.

Sunny, no I didn't get to watch them do it frown although I was very interested since I was an optician for 15 years wink However, I do very distinctly remember that he said it was contact tonometry... In fact, I had to bring Pika to this specific vet on Day 2 (as referred by the emergency vet I had brought her to on Day 1) because this was the only vet in the area who had a tonometer that could be used on her (I presume due to size).

I've not heard of other gliders having eye problems in conjuction with the HLP, but it is a distinct possibility that there may be a correlation there dunno

I have the euthanasia form to sign....
she is at home right now... sleeping...
I don't have the heart to sign it yet. cry
She is so weak; I really thought she was getting better...
Maybe that was her last week to be with her Mommy....She got better so I could have a few more good memories of her.
I need to talk to my husband tonight about it all when he gets home.
This isn't a decision just for me to make.
cry
I don't even think she knows where she is anymore or what is going on. I gave her a piece of corn and she sat there w/ her mouth open; I had to set it in her mouth for her to find it. I have to pick her up and put her at her water bowel and food bowel and put her back so she doesn't get hurt since she can't tell where she is going.... poor thing
worried

I'm so sorry you are going to have to make this decision! Whatever you decide, Heidi has had a GREAT life with you, and you are doing absolutely everything you possibly can for her. She knows it, she appreciates it, she loves you for it.

You might be right there, I do know that some gliders have seemingly gotten better right before their time came, for the very reason you said.

We are all here for you! You'll make the right decision, talk it over with your husband, but I know that you'll make the right one, whatever that may be. hug2

But I can't decide if I should just keep her at home to wait or to go ahead and do it.
The vet told me it wasn't as peaceful as it is for dogs b/c they are so small they can't use an IV....
that made me hesitate to give the form back.
If I do it.... did I give up on her? Would she have gotten better? If I keep her at home; am I torturing her??? Am I making her suffer needlessly b/c of my own feelings of not wanting to give up?
Which is better for her??? which is better for me???
Herman died w/ me at home and that vision is with me every day... not a day has gone by when I haven't pictured that awful scene.... will that be the case w/ her?
I'm losing her no matter what decision I make!!!!

Does the vet think there is a chance of recovery? Maybe he would even be willing to do a phone consult with another glider vet to see if they think there is anything that can be done.

I'm thinking to keep her w/ me another day or 2 before I make any final decisions

cry Ladybug, my heart goes out to you during all this. Please know sweetie, that the longer you wait the harder it is on her and yourself. If your vet has already decided that Heidi has no chance of recovery than please don't put yourself thru this horriable pain of watching her suffer. I hope you don't think I'm being unsympathetic, I'm not, I just understand the terriable pain your feeling. If when you say she nolonger has any awareness of what's going on, this is their way of leaving. The body is beginning to shut down. If you feel that having her put to sleep is to traumatic, put her in her special pouch, sit with her, hold her close and just send her all your love and light to her.
Whatever your heart decides, your doing what she is asking.
Much love light and blessings is with Heidi, you, and your family. heart

cry Ladybug, I know exactally where you are right now. Last year we had a glider diagnosed with cancer. We tried everything the vet recommended but it finally came down to a quality of life decission. I put Lucy in my bra with her favorite blankie and took her to the vets office. I cried all the way there. The vet took her into the back for the euthinazia so I didn't have to watch. When she brought Lucy back into me, she was curled up in the vet's hand like she was sleeping. We put her in her pouch, and I brought her home & burried her under the rose bush in our yard. I had also agonized over the decission for days before deciding that it was what was right for Lucy. My heart goes out to you.
