I was wondering if anyone has compiled a weight chart for Joeys... Like we have for humans... So newer mommas like me can see where their joeys fall... in the top % or normal range for their age...

Klingers Joey came OOP last monday and I swear that she is the BIGGEST thing EVER! I really expected a joey to be smaller! ??? I am partly crediting her diet and partly wondering what the heck??? Her mom is TINY! and dad is on the small side too... She is just robust! Strong and Healthy and Growing like a weed! I'm quite impressed! lol

If anyone has documented the growth of their lil ones.. please share the info or point me to it! Thanks!

Sorry, but I don't think there's a chart like that available. It would be very helpful if there was though...

Then we should all weigh our Joeys from day one OOP till 8 weeks and note the diet we feed and compile a mass data base and play out the numbers.... sounds like a fun project! I just know that we have members who live for studies like this!!!!

I know that I have a couple joeys due soon... and we can do two charts.... singles and twins! clap

I was wondering the same thing a few weeks ago. I asked SRLB about it and this is what she sent me.

1 week OOP 10-20 grams
2 weeks OOP 14-24 grams
3 weeks OOP 15-25 grams
4 weeks OOP 21-32 grams
5 weeks OOP 28-39 grams
6 weeks OOP 33-44 grams
7 weeks OOP 38-49 grams
8 weeks OOP 43-59 grams

Hope that helps!

yup my little boy went home at 8 weeks at 54 grams, and at the same time his sister was 52 grams, so that scale seems about right to me!! I didn't right down their weights all along, but did weigh them and I think they followed right about in the middle of the ranges for each week. I'll keep track of these two now as soon as they come OOP if your actually looking at putting it together.

I'm not good at the info compiling and charting.... but I know a couple of us are! I just can't remember the names of the members right now... hmmmm So DO! weigh and record... I will... Daily if you can... I will, And lets see how mass a database we can get going... the more weights and joeys we get the better an idea we will have of what these little ones are running and again... what diet they are on... that may or may not have an affect.... I don't know??? But to do out own little study... how cool would that be??? we have a large "pool" of joeys to test and measure... how good do we have it??? its a researchers dream!

I have a single that was just oop on the 22. I would be interested in doing this. Is there a certain type of scales or just anything that weighs grams?

My husband has a postal scale here for our business. I used it to weigh my little one. It has grams and ounces.

The joeys that I currently have came oop on 9/15/07. I'll go ahead and start weighing them daily and once the next set comes oop, I'll weight them daily, too. I agree that compiling all of this information would be a great resource in the future. I would be willing to compile the data... let me figure out a chart that would be uniform to the project. I'll post it here once it's ready to go thumb
Edited to add:
Also, I think if we're going to compile data for a study, we should make it even more comprehensive... we could also compile data for:
* Date fully oop (detached from teat)
* Date eyes opened
* # of joeys in litter
* Date started to wean
* Date fully weaned
* Date separated from parents
* If joey supplement fed:
----date supplementing started
----how many times per day supplemented
----type of formula used
* If joey hand-raised:
----date joey rejected/pulled from parents
----indications of rejection
----type of formula used

Can anyone think of any other data that should be added to this study?

Kick butt Suz!!! I knew someone would pick this up!!!! THANK YOU!!!

Add diet fed to the parents, unless that is already in there... lol I and very interested in this one... it may not amount to a hill of beans but I'm curious...

And again... THANKS!!! for offering to handle all of this info!

Nope that about covers it Suz. I went and got a scale to use. I also got a software company to change one of their chin programs into a sugar glider breeding program and I am keeping all this information in this program and would be happy to add my data to this database.

ah ha looking at the weight chart my joey is very healthy. I had marked down that he should have come oop a week earlier then he did and by looking at the weight chart he is the weight of a 2 week oop joey, just weighed him and he weighs 24 grams. Also his eyes are open today and he is getting his fur. I think momma snowed me and hid him from me for a week...lol.

Anna, my Carina always keeps her joeys from me for an extra week roflmao That's one of the reasons why I am going to add a question to the Study about date the joey's eyes opened smile I've almost got it ready to go, I'm just waiting for an answer to a formatting problem I'm having from my web-site host...

Meggan, the main thing will be to weigh the joeys every day (at the same time each day, if possible) and record their weights. In addition, please keep track of when their eyes open, when they start to wean from their parents' milk and when they are completely weaned. Hopefully within a few days, I'll have the form ready to be viewed on my website and that will give you a better idea of the information we are looking for. When it's ready to go, I'll post the url here and in a new thread...

Also, since you're hand feeding the joeys, you can use the chart I mailed to you with your supplies for keeping track of their daily weights. Plus, once you fill out the form, you will need to enter the information about type of formula; when separated from parents; signs of rejection, etc.

What about keeping a record of their daily intake and output.
Also, I noticed that it was suggested to weigh them at the same time each day. I would note that they should weigh them either before eliminating or after, also they should weigh them so many hours after a feeding and stay consistant with the process.
Their weight will not be a (true weight) if the given suggestions were not followed.

Another thought would be to measure their growth rates, ie: inches per day or per week.

I'm interested in this too, good luck and I can't wait to see the results!

Linda, those are excellent points about the consistency in weighing them.
It would be difficult to track their input and output unless they were being hand-raised; therefore, I don't think I'm going to try to encompass that part of it in the Study...

Ok. I will use that as well. I think it is awesome you send that with your orders. It really is helpful. Question though. Where in the world can I find a scale that weighs in grams? I went to Walmart, Macey's, Target, Petco, Petsmart and Albertson's and none of them had one.

Usually your weight watchers scales will convert from grams to ounces. Look in the appliance sections, where the coffee makers, toasters, blenders etc. are.

I bought my scale at Wal-Mart in the kitchen section. It's made by "Good Cook" and weighs in both ounces and grams thumb

I bought the same one as Suz. While they do have some for about $7 cheaper in the postal section, I liked the tray that comes with the kitchen one, makes it easier to weigh the more wiggly ones, lol

Weight charts for joeys are tricky. I've had joeys come OOP anywhere from 8 grams to 18 grams and I have a female joey that is just about OOP that looks like she might blow that 18 grams out of the water, she's huge!

I think the parents weight needs to be considered in the weight chart too. I had a 65 gram female that, if I was lucky, would have her joeys up to maybe 40 grams by 8 weeks OOP... Some of my bigger gliders have had joeys over 70 grams at 8 weeks OOP.

Here is a weight chart that came from an Australian rehabilitator of aussie wildlife.There are other charts for various marsupial wildlife. Of course the weights are for aussie sugar gliders and squirrel gliders but may help as a guideline. Some of my gliders have been the weights at the dates on both charts.
As Leyna said the size of parents and when gliders were oop(some come out with just a light stripe pink and no fur,and some come oop with almost fully furred on top except for gliding membrane.) can change the weights because there is no constant as oop dates " are a rubbery concept at best". The eyes opening date and weights from dates accordingly would be a more uniform age versus weights, in my opinion. I have had joeys left in box that their eyes didn't start to open for over two weeks and also have had other joeys oop that eyes opened in five days. Then there is the possibility of in/out of pouch where mom leaves baby in nest and next night the babies are back in the pouch(I have seen this also happen).

Leyna, that is why one of the criteria that I suggested is the date the joey's eyes open. This will give a better indication as to the actual age of the joey. Since I have a mother that is always keeping her joeys in pouch extra long, it is a factor that I am acutely aware of roflmao As for the information about the parents' size, you are right and that is a great point! I will be adding those questions to my study questionnaire.

Thank you very much for the chart - it's very helpful and interesting. I had forgotten that there was such a chart, but I do remember my veterinarian having shown it to me a few years ago. Thanks for bringing it back to the forefront for me smile I agree about the eye opening date being a more accurate starting point, that is why I have added it to the study (see my reply to Leyna...)

Although I don't have the actual Joey Development Study page ready yet, I was able to complete the Vital Statistics Chart and Questionnaire that can be printed and used for compiling the information for the study! If you are interested in participating in this study, please click on the link, print the page and complete the information.
Once I have the actual Study page ready, I will post its link here as well.
thanks Thanks to everyone for contributing your ideas about what the study should entail.
