I took Ooma in for her first check up today (she was an angel by the way even let the vet hold her with no crabbing cool).

Unfortunately her fecal came back showing she has roundworm, tapeworm and coccidia. The vet put her on Pancacur (3 days)and Trimeth-Sulfa (10 days). I am familiar with the worms as I have other animals. But I am not familiar with the coccidia...is this something that I should be worried about transfering to another pet or person? We have only had her 8 days so she is in a 30 quarentine cage and my dogs and cats do not have access to her. And we always wash our hands after handling our gliders. I just want to make sure that I know what I am dealing with and that everyone is safe.

This is what I find on it:
Coccidia are single celled organisms that infect the intestine. They are microscopic parasites detectable on routine fecal tests in the same way that worms are but coccidia are not worms and they are not visible to the naked eye. Coccidia infection causes a watery diarrhea which is sometimes bloody and can even be a life-threatening problem to an especially young or small pet.

While there are species of coccidia that can infect people (Toxoplasma and Cryptosporidium, for example), the Isospora species of dogs and cats are not infective to people. Other pets may become infected from exposure to infected fecal matter but it is important to note that this is usually an infection of the young (i.e. the immature immune system tends to let the coccidia infection reach large numbers where the mature immune system probably will not.)

I wonder if I need to give her something special as far as food goes. I just put her HPW, fruits and veggies in her cage. Should I being feeding something else?

Poor little thing! hug2 I hope she gets rid of all those nasty things.

You probably have already done this, but I would tell her breeder so that she can get her other gliders checked out.

Most gliders get it by cross contamination from an animal it's common to, like dogs or cats...in essence, poor hygiene where she came from. They are not common to or normal in gliders, and in fact no reason they should ever even be exposed. It is also VERY serious in gliders, as roundworms can grow very, very long and gliders are not very big. Be aware the meds may not be enough as well, particularly for a severe infestation. SugarBlossoms has been fighting this for a year or more in one of hers that came to her with them-roundworms.it would be worth sending her a PM. Let me see if I can find the links I gave to her.

The vet didn't say how she got it. But he didn't seem to think that it was that unusual either. dunno

We just gave Ooma her meds. She is the sweetest little thing we followed the instructions posted on GC and wrapped her in some fleece and she just took it. She didn't fight it or squirm at all. When we let her out of the fleece she just ran up my arm and snuggled into my hair. mlove

Could she have gotten it from her Mom? Or does it have to be direct contact? Just trying to learn all I can...

I'm sorry your little one is going thru this. One reason they can be so hard to get rid of is because they segment...if any are left, the segment can grow a new worm.
Weight loss and diarrhea to bloody diarrhea are frequent symptoms. Please keep us updated on her. hug2

It isn't uncommon in most domestic animals, dogs, cats, rodents...animals that tend to go outside and be in places to be exposed. Gliders, as a caged exotic animal however, are not IN those places. Unless hygeine is poor, or they are allowed to play somewhere an infected animal has been, should never come in contact at all. For them, it is NOT common or normal.

And if the parents had it they could expose the joeys. Problem is, same goes for the parents.

you might need a few rounds of meds. i think judie knows alot on treating different bacterias and problems in gliders. maybe you can contact her. i had clostridium in my new baby. but had to treat her with flagyl for 10 days to get rid of it. after you treat her i would do another fecal to make sure its gone. also seek another vets opionion on the meds. it wouldnt hurt. im sure she will be fine. just follow all the instructions and keep the meds the same time everyday. and dont miss a dose. i know panacur treats worms and is a good med.

I haven't had Ooma's parents very long, I keep my gliders in clean cages. I will take Ooma's parents to the vet asap. Ooma's mom call me please and I'll reimburse you for the cost of the medicine. I'm so sorry she is sick.

Ok
Roundworms come from mice. If a mouse got close to the cage and the glider ate it, it would have the round worm.

I appreciate all the help and well wishes from everyone. thanks

Ooma has a follow up appointment in 14 days however if she doesn't seem to feel better before then I will take her back in. Everyone at my vet's office knows me by name I am there so often with all my critters and luckily they deal with exotics so I am comfortable that they are able to deal with this. I am also planning to take a stool sample to them when she has finished her meds. And I probably will take another sample in a couple weeks after that to be sure that she is totally clean.

I have some Nutriglider...should I try giving her some to make sure she stays hydrated? How much do I use and how do I mix it. Should I just put some in a small dish or should I give her some in a syringe? I haven't used it before so I would love so input.

I don't know on the Nutriglider-I'm 'assuming' (which can be dangerous) it's a nectar mix like gliderade? I don't know what the mixing ratios are on the Nutriglider-gliderade is 5 parts water to 1 part powder. dunno A dish of it should be fine, unless she won't drink, then you could put a little down by syringe to make sure it gets in. You may want to post in diets and ask on that one-I know other members use it.

This is what I found on Nutri-Glider, mixing directions . It says to use a fruit drink (I would think something like pedialyte or similar) for gliders under a year.
