I've been reading up on the posts about the issue when the penis is out all the time. Sparky doesn't fit exactly any of the descriptions/scenarios. He is about 14-16 wks oop and just got his bald spot About the same time as that his penis popped out- all the way and has not retracted. normal color, not swollen, he doesn't lick or chew. I have him with me most of the day and he sleeps. Eats, drinks, pees, and poops just fine, and no smell. Is this normal at this age? I don't want to create a problem by putting KY on it and making him chew or take interest if this is just normal.........

Hi Tammy
My little guy did this too, but he would retract it when playing and various other times. Some little guys like to play with it and my vet told me that they are relaxed when they let it hang out while sleeping which Cooper did. Anyway, after I got him neutered he's not done any of this since. Right after the neuter he had it hanging out for a few days and I put ky on it so it didn't dry out and he never messed with it.
You might want to put some ky on it during the day when he's sleepy to keep it from drying out and see if he'll retract it. If it's been out for a week or two...it might be time just for a vet check to make sure he's ok.

Tara,
Thanks! yeah, he doesn't retract it when playing- it's out 24/7.
I'll try KY- I don't want to get him neutered.

Tammy:

I've had this happen several times with the same little man; he needs to go to the vet & have a urinalysis done. It can be a VERY SIMPLE procedure if your vet has a litmus strip called DiaScreen 8...this test strip checks protein, ketones, pH level, presence of blood & a couple other things that are escaping me right now. Depending on the test results, he MIGHT need antibiotics.

The odds are that your little guy has a UTI and that's why his penis is hanging out...even though he's not messing with it & it's not swollen/discolored. No matter the age, a male should NOT have his penis hanging out 24/7.

Good luck to you!

Returned from vet visit- what an ordeal! OMG! First (exotic) vet thought it was a prolapsed rectum and said he needs surgery, but given his inexperience I should see a specialist, so he called one in Tampa that is by referral only. They waited at the office for me to get there as the other vet called and they felt it was urgent.
The resuts: no uti. He feels it's calcium defiency even though I feed BML and supplement- he feels he's not getting enough calcium and is hypoglycemic and he can't retract his penis. He pushed it back in successfully, but said that it could come back out (as we all know). He gave him a yummy calcium supplement and told me that he's also probably sexually frustrated and really needs to be neutered if he's going to continue to reside with another male glider. He says that male (intact) gliders do not get along very well and will almost always fight. Is this anyone else's experience? Mine do not fight, but they do mount each other a lot.
So- that's been our day and experience with our precious little guy!!

It's a good thing that there was another vet for consult! Whew! It pays to get a second opinion now days.
The vet that suggested that he be neutered is right. This will continue to happen therefore by getting both of them neutered will save alot of difficulties in the longrun.
It isn't uncommon for unneutered males to get along for a period of time, but as they become more mature there can be problems with dominancy issues and sometimes can lead into serious fighting. Here is a link that will cover more detail on the importance of neutering your gliders.
Neutering Facts
Thank you for the update, and please keep us posted on how he is doing.

Yes, I am glad to hear there was another vet for consult too! That would be scary! I agree with Linda, neutering would be best, 2 intact males will more then likely have issues in the future. Keep us posted smile

Thanks all! BUT... This evening has gotten worse. He woke up and out it pops. I put it back in with a q-tip and ice water like the vet said, but that didn't last but 5 minutes. Now he's suddenly interested in it and is licking and pulling on it. I do not have an e-collar. I think I'll be making a late night drive to Walgreens to find some molefoam.

Yeah, he may just be trying to um...take care of business on his own...
Thank God you didn't have the surgery for a prolapsed rectum!
I agree, neuter him. It will eliminate the issue you are having right now. And keep him from being frustrated. Plus, if they keep trying to mount each other, eventually there will be a fight, and that is not a pretty sight.

What a night. I paced around the house for about an hour desparately trying to find a solution. When I put Sparky back into the cage, the other glider started pulling and biting on Sparky's penis. Then Sparky would pull it all the way out with his teeth (like 3" worth). Then they started fighting - Walgreens was not 24hrs so no e-collar. I ended up glider proofing the extra bathroom. ladder in toilet, lid down, and removed the stuff that could be dangerous. I padded the floors with bath mats and hung some toys (that Xglider made!!!) and lined the tub with fleece. I put food bowls in the tub, said a prayer and slept on the couch and had nighmares all night long about awful things happening to him.

This morning, I couldn't find him (!) I looked up and there he was on the top of the shower valance!! He was having the time of his life. He had found a way to climb from the toys to the window treatment to the top treatment! He was flying everywhere and then all over me!!

Penis is still out. That seems to be a hopeless case so I will have to neuter both. In the meantime, I will be building a cage today!

Cora,
What is flossing? I've heard the term. Does it mean just grooming?

In essence, yes - when a male glider flosses he is more or less messing with himself. My only concern is that with him continuing doing this is that he might casuse some serious damage. Were you able to get materials for an ecolar? Here is another discussion link on a different type of ecolar that might help.

I'm so sorry that your having to go thru this with him. hug2

It's like flossing your teeth, but they use their penis. They are playing with it. Probably not a good idea for the other one to play with it, but you know that.
Let us know if you need help with the e-collar.

I did not do the e-collar. It's still way out but I haven't noticed him playing with it as much- he's been very actively playing in the cage all night and I've been busy with work all day yesterday, but when I checked on him- he was sleeping. Do you think I should put an e-collar on him and push it back in?
