Ok, I have been reading all the posts on here and on other forums about breeding. It's not in my immediate future plans, but I was simply curious.
The law, correct me if I'm wrong, is that if you have more then 3 BREEDING females you have to get a license.
The controversy is over the word "breeding". Some people say that includes any unspayed female glider you own and others say that only includes the ones that are actually breeding.
Well, I called the USDA(by the way, the post with the phones #'s needs to be updated. The eastern area # is 919-855-7100) and used myself as an example. I told them I have 3 females and a neutered male that are my pets and asked if I would need to get a license if I bought a breeding pair. The man clearly stated that I would NOT. HE said even though my other gliders are not spayed, as long as they are not being used to breed, I do not need the license and that the USDA would only see me as having ONE breeding female.
I'm sure this has already been stated alot, but I just have seen so many people get riled up about this. Well, now it's settled! lol.
*sigh*

One thing I would add to that. I would at a minimum get the gentleman's name and title that gave you the information.
What I would personally do, is ask him to fax or mail you something that showed exactly what he said to you. That way, your bases are covered. The reason I would do that, is that there seems to be conflicting information and some of it seems to come from the USADA.

I guess if I ever do pursue breeding that I will take your advice though. Better safe then sorry.

This is what I found on the Internet..... In the USA you do not need a license if you have 3 or few breeding females. http://www.petsugargliders.com/sgusda.php

I was also told by the USDA that you wouldn't need a license if you had less than 4 breeding females. and I'm in KY

Yes, get a name, position and contact number. I have been told both. When I was breeding and carried a USDA license (and btw, you do not have to have 4+ breeding females to carry a license either, I maintained one with just one breeding pair for 2 years past the 'new' rule) I was told if you had 4 or more intact females of any species on your property and an intact male of those species as well, you must maintain a license because they would have no way of knowing if you were breeding all of those animals or not. In the case of sugar gliders; if you had only one intact male but two cages of two females a piece and you were breeding one cage but not the other, technically, you have 4 intact and breeding age females that could be bred (and some people would do it) you are supposed to maintain a license. If someone told you otherwise, I would just check frequently and keep a list of names, their position and contact numbers just in case. The USDA is fairly lenient when it comes to all of this (as long as it is not an obvious violation) and they are so busy anyway, that it is not that big of a deal generally, but be aware that you still might come across both opinions.

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.

Yes, get a name, position and contact number. I couldn't agree more...... If your USDA inspector says you don't need a license to breed...and you feel you should under the new law...ask for them to put it in writing...this will protect you and your animals should anything come up.

I called an was even refused a packet to apply If I did not have 3 or more BREEDING females. I even specifically asked what if I have 20 females but only 2 were breeding? I was told no I could not have a liscense. So I called again and was told the same info from a different person - except I could apply but it wasnt recommended or necessary. ANd they do meam 3 or more breeding females from any species so If ou have cats dogs and gliders that all breed (or any combo) you need to get a liscense...
Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
