Bindi has her pouch inverted. I took her to the vet today. They want me to bring her back tomarrow so they can knock her out and put her pouch back in (check for infection) and maybe stitch shut. Is this how all vets do this???? I have another exotic vet near by can get a 2nd opinion if needed.
Thanks
Cheryl

Wow, I don't know, but it does sound familiar. I know there was someone on a couple of weeks ago with an inverted pouch and I think their vet did about the same thing. Hopefully someone with some experience will come along soon.

I have never heard of a glider having their pouch stitched together unless there was a tear from an injury (but not closing the pouch). As for putting it back in , usually all it takes is a gentle push using a q-tip. The only thing that should be concerning is if there is an infection. If so, she should be put on antibiotics.

I think that the stitch isn't to hold the pouch shut. Rather - one stitch to hold the pouch in place.

It rings a bell with me, too ... but I don't know.

Both of my girls had inverted pouches with infection within a couple of days of each other. The vet just gave them antibiotics and said that as the infection went away, so should the swelling and the pouches would probably go back in on their own, and they did. I couldn't see any infection or redness when I just looked at them - the skin poking out looked pink - but when she kind of opened up Alkina's pouch it was really red and swollen. Nara wasn't as bad. She didn't knock them out for it, she just had me hold them in a piece of fleece while she looked. I've not heard about stitching it so I don't know. dunno

I've only been to the vet once for an inverted pouch. He said it's perfectly normal as girls reach sexual maturity or have joeys in pouch because they're cleaning it more. As long as it's not red or smelly there's no need to do anything. My vet pushed it back in with a swab stick (and also swabbed it to check for infection) No knocking out and no stitches involved at all.

Cheryl,
We spoke on the phone earlier, but I thought I'd better post my advice here, too, so everyone can know what I told you. Just keep an eye on the pouch and do not bring her back to the vet to have her put under for putting the pouch back in. The vet shouldn't need to put her under anesthesia to put the pouch back in. You should be able to put it back in by putting a bit of Neosporin (without pain meds) on the tip of a q-tip. Use the q-tip to gently push/massage the pouch back inside. Stitches should never be put into a pouch (nor a cloaca) unless absolutely necessary. The reason for this is that the foreign object could and most likely would cause the glider to start Self Mutilating in an attempt to get rid of the foreign object (suture). I would recommend trying to put the pouch back in yourself (as described above) and then simply keeping an eye on it for the next week. Unless it starts to show signs of infection (redness and/or swelling) it should be fine if left to heal on its own.
HTH

You can not stitch a females pouch shut, they will rip it open. A female needs to be able to open her pouch to clean it, or she will get an infection. You should also not have to put her down to put it back in.

**HUGS** To Suz. Thank you so much.
I cancelled the appointment after talking to Suz. I will watch and see what happens with her pouch. And I will try to put it back in if need be. This has also opened my eyes to maybe finding another vet. One who isn't so quick to put my little sugs under anethesia. I worry about this because they are so little.
Thank you everybody for your advice & help. **HUGS**

Cheryl,
Please continue to keep us posted on her progress and do call me if you need me again hug2 I'm so glad you followed your instincts and didn't just blindly accept the vet's "treatment" for her.

Just an update on Bindi. Her pouch didn't go back in yet so I took Suz advice and took a q-tip & the neo. Flipped her over gave her some mealies and gently messaged it back in place. I was a bit worried about doing it but within a few minutes it was done. Now I will watch and see if it will come out again or this was just one of those one time things that happen. Thanks so much everybody **HUGS**
