'Ello, obviously I'm very new to this forum. I'm Ley, and I guess you'll hopefully get to know me better after some time. I purchased, well actually more-so rescued a poor, neglected, three year old male glider. Well, I haven't had him for even a week yet, but I decided to get him neutered tonight so that I may hopefully come across a female cage mate for him one of these days (seeing that he has never had one and barely any attention). Well, Nicias has had a crazy night as we all have (thank god I had/ have support!!!) He's currently rolling around in a small tent with an E-Collar around his neck with three femmes watching him closely. Well, seeing that this is my first glider ever and neither of the other two have had to have their gliders wear an E-collar, just wondering if there is any helpful tips or pointers out there for my baby. Special sleeping arrangements and feeding arrangements have been made; and we've got the pain meds as well as the antibiotics taken care of. I feel like my first post isn't a very good post, but we've had an interesting night.

Hello! I don't have any personal experience with e-collars, but I wanted to welcome you to Glider Central. I'm sure someone with more experience with this will come along shortly.

I don't have experience with using an e-collar on a glider although I have e-collars just in case.
Did you bring home pain meds for him? Did he try to self mutilate? (reason for the collar?) Does he have an antibiotic?
Keep him as calm as you can. With my boys, they were too sleepy from pain meds to do anything. I gave them their meds for 2 days then they didn't need it and were fine. I fed them in the pouch and offered water with their bottle about every 4 hours. I didn't have any problems.
Please keep us posted.
Someone with knowledge of this will be here I'm sure shortly!!!

I was with Ashley today for the neuter. This boy was a bit naughty. He decided to rip out his stitch. This was a pomless neuter. I have had three at my vet with no problem...so it is not the vet....the vet is great. This guy came with some baggage...he has long been solo for a long time and been pretty neglected...so part of what happened I am guessing. He is in an ecollar. The vet gave him a second anesthia and repaired his stitch. He is on Torb w/ Ace and Baytril since he tried to SM. She is feeding him right now and offering water...he is doing well becides being very PO'd...of course. He went potty and it was some what bloody. I am guessing can be normal post SM and that is exactly why we have antibiotic here. Tell me if I am way wrong. She will be arranging the special sleeping quarters for him. Right now we have him in a tiny dispay tent you see at stores...it is working as a good playpen to supervise him and get him used to the collar which he HATES and is actively trying to chew off...lol. Any and all help welcomed...lol...please.

I've not had a boy pee blood. I would call the vet ASAP. All of my boys were neutered with poms ON and NO stitches or glue. No blood...no collar. Jen should be here in a minute! She'll know what to say! She is at work, could be a bit.

Gwen, Jen will be here in app. 20 min. She's at work and can't look at the moment.
How is he doing now? Has he calmed down some?

He is calmed down. I think when he ripped out the stitch...he may have had a chance to get in a quick bite...nothing serious...but I am thinking that is where the blood came into play.

Oh good. and OUCH! Poor guy! Is he eating and drinking good? The antibiotic and pain meds can dehydrate him some. Fruit is good for him now to help with liquids.

he may have had a chance to get in a quick bite...nothing serious...but I am thinking that is where the blood came into play. If bleeding externally, yes, possibly. If it's in the urine, no. He should not have blood in the urine-that could be an indication he is bleeding internally or into the abdomen, and needs checked out asap. Other than that, you seem to be handling the ecollar part of things well.

Take a look down there without touching anything, as much as gliders pee, he should pee or at least dribble. Have a white tissue or toilet paper to catch it and see what color it is. If he has any red/pink pee stains, I would get him back to the vet ASAP.

Okay. Well it happened again and we're pretty certain the blood is in the pee so we're on the phone with the vet right now.

when he ripped the stitch...his penis extended far out of the cloaca. The vet took him back in...stitched him up again and shortly after the re-stitch...his penis went back to normal. his cloaca is darker colored than normal. He does not have large amounts of bleed being excreted...but it does happen when he urinates or seems to have pressue by pushing.

He needs to get back to the vet. That is not good. Blood in the urine is an indication of internal hemmorage. Please keep us posted!! HUGS

That shouldn't have caused internal bleeding. Not a usual thing to happen. When the vet put him back under and restitched him, he/she would have seen any damage at that point.

Peeing blood in this instance would indicate internal bleeding. If it's not stopping, he could bleed to death on the inside-and gliders don't have that much to spare, yet they bleed at the same rate as any other animal. This needs attended to. Also, check him for dehydration. Let us know what the vet says. An external bite would not cause this. Even if he bit his penis it would clot and stop, not keep going and showing up in the urine (which doesn't come out the ends in a glider)

Ok...he ripped out the stitch originally...his penis came out far and he was applying a lot of pressue in his cloacal area. Where he bit was in that area (the area he was applying pressue to due to stress). The vet re-stitched him and his cloaca went back to normal and everything looked MUCH better. I am thinking that his puncture wound is in the prosess of healing but when he applies the pressure to urinate...that is when he bleeds. It is not a lot...but you can see it in the color of the urine. We just got off the phone with the vet... he said that he has never had a glider urinate blood after a neuter but that he did puncture himself and that is likely where it's coming from. He said the fact that he is urinating without strain means his urethra wasn't damaged but that there is damage regardless. He said to watch him over night and see if the color of his urine changes. If he gets worse or something drastic happens, we're supposed to page him right away and go to the emergency vet he is working at. Otherwise, if he improves we're supposed to call at 10AM tomorrow and give him an update which will probably result in a follow-up exam.

I don't know that I agree with the vet in this case...it's been how many hours post neuter and he's still bleeding? If it's not entirely gone in the next couple hours I'd take him as soon as they open. Again, watch VERY close. If there is a tear on the inside, also (this isn't coming from outside), they may need to try and close it if it won't stop. Also, did you see if he was dehydrated at all?

The only reason we're accepting the vets reasoning is that no matter what we do for him, he is incredibly determined to get the collar off and pretty much spent an hour rolling around trying to pry it off, which obviously isn't helping with the healing process and he most likely at least partially reopened whatever was beginning to seal, but he's finally calming down, eating, drinking, and pottying just fine (as in without strain).

Ley, is the collar by chance too tight? Does it have cushioning for his neck?

As far as we can tell it isn't too tight. He's been in it for a couple hours now and is doing just fine. It does have cushioning on it and we did check it a couple times to make sure he's not choking.
And even though he's drinking water just fine, I checked, and he is hydrated.

Ashley, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this with your very first glider & first neutering experience Although I don't have anything to add to Jen's advice, I just wanted to let you know that I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. I'm going to move this over to Health & Hygiene for better viewing and responses to your situation. Hopefully you'll be able to get more advice...

Thanks so much for your concern, well; I guess this just means that my next glider will be a whole lot easier to handle right? Right now, Nicias is just chillin' and continues to drink bits of water here and there. He's also eating somewhat when offered food or treats, so hopefully this will get better... I hope.

They do not like the collar, and thrashing around the first hour, and on/off for a day or so, is normal. Much preferable to tearing his own stomach open, however. As he realizes that no matter WHAT he does it's not coming off, he'll stop trying so hard. Should he manage to get out of it, get it right back on. If he can crab, eat, and drink, he can breathe. Watch for a blue nose-that would indicate lack of oxygen...having it darken some ( a bit redder than normal) is okay and expected.

Oh, the poor guy! I know what you're going through! Lan actually did a lot of damage - chewed into his tummy - after his neuter. There's some awesome advice on this thread, probably starting around the 2nd page somewhere... http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/334295/fpart/1What was the vets name? Just curious - and for future reference! Good Luck, you guys! edited to add: Hello! And Welcome to GC!!!

Gwen, Ashley, and I all use Dr. Keith Hedges at Brighton Veterinary Hospital.
Ashley is home now with Nicias. She doesn't have internet so I'll give updates when I get them. So far, I haven't heard from her. She could have called Gwen at some point but I'm going to try contacting her next time I know she's going to be awake at - 3 since that's when Nicias would be taking meds.

Okay well, Ashley said he is doing generally okay. He's still eating, drinking, and urinating. From what she can tell there is still tiny specks of blood but it's significantly better than yesterday. She did talk to the vet and he feels that Nicias is improving but that Ashley should just keep him updated and bring him in if anything changes. I don't think I'm forgetting anything...

Ashley was told to call if she had any problems at all. She has not called either of us. She has a final at 7:30 AM...so we are not trying to bother her while she tries to get what little rest she can due to taking care of her boy.
I am keeping everything up to date with Ivy uinder her post...so read there.

Well so far things are okay. He goes between trying to rip his collar off and eating when he's awake and is pretty stubborn about meds but that's better than a lot of other things.
Ashley said he hasn't peed any blood since I talked to her last, and we put a nice piece of white fleece in there to help moniter that.
What we're going to do once the meds are finished with I don't know. You'd think he'd had given up on trying to take the collar off by now. And we're pretty sure that unless he keeps the collar on until he's fully healed, he will attack himself. Of course this is only our assumption but our assumption is based on his behavious so far. Any advice for long e-collar wear would be nice.

Thanks guys for the help and the concern, Nicias is doing better or at least seems to be doing better. Still won't be able to take that collar off of him quite yet though. Maybe he'll change his behavior soon? Hope so. I just finished feeding him a little bit ago. He ate quite a bit of his BML mixture and nibbled/licked a piece of honeydew melon. Dani and I both have been kind of forcing him to take bits of water here and there through a syringe. (P.S. I've been giving him pedialite here and there as well as the water. Gwen said that the electrolytes would help as well as it being a fluid would keep him hydrated. We like hydration, yes!) Other than that, he does have his moments where he actually calms down when it comes to the thrashing and sleeps here and there (FINALLY!). Things are looking better and aren't as crazy. We'll probably let him roll around in this little cat tent later tonight to see how he reacts. Poor guy is all pent up.

So Nicias is a naughty little boy. Today around 2 PM, I had noticed that he had JUST started hissing while attempting to pee. He wasn't straining at all while peeing, and was able to pee quite a bit. Contacted the vet right away and got him in for an appointment. The vet said that it was his rectum that was bothering him, somehow; he must have bitten himself after he was brought back to us after being neutered. Which is interesting since we had him pretty well and he managed to slip from us only a couple of times. Anyway, Nicias does not have a bladder or urinary infection (YAY!!!) he's clear and can go; he just bit himself causing him to hurt a little. There is a little pus here and there, but as long as we wipe him clean couple times a day and keep him on Baytril he'll be fine. We hope... On a good note, the vet examined his neuter site and he's perfect! He's healed up quite nicely and has a nice little line instead of a gaping hole. Makes sense since he's been in an e-collar this whole time. Well all in all, the collar won't be coming off. Nicias and I were both hoping to take it off tonight. He's been eating a lot of yogurt, some fruit here and there and loves to drink gatorade from a dropper. Hopefully he'll be feeling better very very soon.

I'm glad to hear he's healing up! As long as he didn't take too big a bite out his hind quarters, it shouldn't be too long before he gets to take the collar off!

But he's still looking better. His cloaca looked close to normal yesterday. Just a tiny scab and a little swelling but most of the swelling and color has gone away. Which is good And he got a new E-Collar because the old one was grungy even though we constantly cleaned it.

Ashley and Dani are taking Nici into the E vet. Our vet is out of town and Nici is hissing and refusing liquids apparently now...not sure of any further details, I only spoke with Dani very briefly online before she left to go to Ashley's. I am hoping everything is ok. He is her first glider and she adores him beyond belief. He was pretty neglected before she got him and he is the sweetest little guy. Very needy. She is going through a lot right now trying to get him well again and out of that collar...and this is a step in the wrong direction, and not by her choice. Nici has had a hard time with this neuter. I will update when I get more info...unless one of them get on here first, but they are supposed to call me when they know more...send your prayers their way...he is a strong boy...and I hope he is ok. Hoping to bring better news next update.

This is basically the extension to my first actual topic/post. Nicias was looking pretty good until I got home tonight around 5:00 PM. I had been out for only 45 minutes to an hour, and Nicias was looking just fine previously to me leaving him. He was hydrated and had eaten, was climbing and bouncing around like the mad little guy that he is. He was actually urinating regularly mind the hissing. So, got back home and found him in a corner of his kennel that I had him in, he was hissing with varying pitches; not accepting liquids or food and definetly not urinating. I had picked him up and found that his cloaca was swollen once again. Well, after calling an emergency after hours line for the vet that I had previously taken Nicias to, I finally got a response which proved to be of now help what-so-ever. The guy sat with me on the phone for just about 15 minutes telling me that the doctor was out of state and had not given him any type of communication/numbers to contact him by. Well, called another after hour vet and was told to bring Nicias in after explaining the situation. After sitting there for a nice long while; Dani and I were told that he needs to be kept over night, given a couple more tests to see whats going on, because as far as they know his swelling his causing the build up in his bladder; therefor he can not release it. Anyway, they also want to try to put in another catheter and give some cortisone to help bring down his swelling. So tomorrow we get to go back and get him, and if not tomorrow then Monday EARLY morning at 7:15 AM. So then we'll get another overview of what is going on if there is anymore. They had expressed the fact that he may have blockage or stones/crystals of some sort. I don't believe I'm leaving anything out, but right now bear with me. My last 24 hours have not been the best, and I hope to god Nicias is going to make it through all of this and live a nice long healthy glider life without anymore troubles. If anyone has any helpful suggestions or anything at all please let me know.

He was already on Baytril. Quick urinalysis showed nothing...so C&S will be the way to go at this point.

Yeah, Dr. Bush saved Lan's life after his post-neuter SMing in July! I really like Dr. Bush. Nicias is in good hands.

I'm really glad to read/hear. Especially after the craziness that I most recently dealt with over the phone. So I called in when I woke up this *ahem* afternoon to find out if I could take Nicias home tonight or not. Well, ended up being swapped off by doctors or staff members over the phone trying to get my questions, of what was the latest, answered. This female doctor that I had not talked to at all the night before started rambling about surgery and some procedures that they'll be doing to try to better Nicias and the doctor will inform me of what was the latest later. Well, I ended up voicing my concern and about the "surgery" that no one had contacted me about or asked for my decesion on. I was briefed on what this surgery would've been, which has bothered me a bit. Basically, they would've taken Nicias's bladder and stappled it to his stomach if he wasn't passing urine; which he is! Yay! But he needs to stay overnight to be monitered once again. Booooo. So I'll be kept posted on how things are going.

YAY!!! Nici is peeing!!! Sorry your baby is going to be away again...right now it is the best place for him...even thought it is an EXPENSIVE place for him. You know we will figure out something to help you Ashley...something. You and Dani will have to come over again for drinks, food, movies and guitar hero again...we will help keep your head on straight!

Here's the "alternate" e-collar that someone was trying to show you earlier... http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z164/...Together052.jpgI stumbled on this by accident when Willy Wonka kept kicking off a traditional e-collar. It's made of Nich bandage (available at the vet's office) and breathable clear medical tape. You get a length of Nich that's twice as long as your glider's neck to shoulders...then just keep adding clear medical tape until they can't reach themselves. It's a LOT more comfortable on the suggie, and there's no need for "special" feeding or sleeping set-ups. The only drawback is that you'd want to take it off every other day to make sure there's nothing bad happening underneath. Ley, my heart goes out to you! You've had more than your share of trouble with something that was supposed to have been so simple as a neutering. I was there with Willy Wonka, too...so I know your emotional roller coaster.

Thanks Gwen, thanks everyone for your support! So Dani and I just brought Nici home, and he isn't wearing a collar. Yay! The vet told me he had been observed all day without a collar on to see how he would act and they had no problems. So tonight I'm keeping the collar off unless he starts acting up again (let's hope not). Tomorrow I'll be calling the New Brighton vet to follow up with Dr. Hedges on Nicias seeing that the emergency vet faxed his paperwork over there. This will be interesting considering that I was told that Dr. Hedges is out of town for a week. We were told that supposedly someone there should also be able to help us with Nici and then we'll possibly be purchasing meds. Until then, no meds and a lot of worrying with the little noises that he'll be making. P.S; We're going to feed him solid foods tonight! Yay!

YAY NICI! It will be nice to see you without that ratty collar. Poor little buddy...even though I know you hate me...I am always the bringer of bad things to you...holding you down after the neuter...holdong you down to put on that collar, holding you down yet again to put on that collar. Hopefully you will see tonight that I love you little guy and that I was never trying to hurt you...lol. Anyways...Ashley wins new mommy of the year award! Barely had this guy half a month and still sticking though all the hardships with her little man like a trooper. You keep it up girl! For a first time ever suggie mommy you are doing GREAT given your circumstances. And now Nici...you keep your fuzzy little butt out of trouble tonight! No more worrying your momma!

So Nicias is at home, collar-less, and on a higher dosage of Baytril. Hopefully that will take care of it. So far he's been pretty good about things but he still hisses a lot but he is getting urine out at least. He's gotten a bit thinner and went from being a happy boy all the time to depressed and skiddish, but I think he's just shaken from the E vet. And let's just say... that after all this... I hate CareCredit. So much. Jerking us around in Nicias' time of need. They are going to be getting some unhappy phone calls in the next few days...

Nici went downhill last night. Ashley called Dani while she (Dani) was in bed sleeping...so she did not get the call. Ashley was upset when Dani had called her back, but did not say much...she said she would tell her more tomorrow when things were finalized. Dani called me...told me this. She then called Ashley back to try to get soem more info. All we really know is that Nicias is not doing well. They took him into the vet today becuase he was going downhill (not sure on any specifics of this-not sure what vet or if he is still at the vet). Nici is supposed to be watched over to see how he does through the night and if prognosis is not good, Nici may have to be put down. I do not know anything more than this really. The E vet said they were going to give him meds...which they sent him mone with nothing for the infection after they said they were going to. Ashley had to go to her regular vet the next day for antibiotics. The E vet said also that he could not be given any antibiotic becuase it would OD him, although there were no meds on his invoice...no charges...no explanation as to what was given...they better hope Nici is ok...otherwise I am urging Ashley and Dani to look into the legal aspects. Not giving antibiotic to someone that sick is hazardous to their health and if Nici is not ok...I feel it ultimitely is neglect on thier part...they said they were giving antibiotic to take home...they did not...and told her she could not give ammoxicillin as it would OD him but gave no explanation and no notations/charges on the bill. There are several things wriiten in the statement overview that went home with Nici that are contradictory such as they said he was ready to go home the night they picked him up...but on the paper it says that it was reccomended that he stay overnight but owners insited to pick him up anyways which WAS NOT the case. We are not very happy with this vet right now. I know they have helped Lan, Brenda's boy...but they definitely did not help in this case...only buy time and make Nici miserable. Pray for him that he will be ok and make it through this!

Dani is at work...I do not have Ashley's # and she does not have internet...so an update will be posted either if Dani or Ashley happen to call me...or when Dani is done with work. It generally only takes her a few hours at work... Brenda...not your fault...we know DR Bush helped Lan greatly...twice. Not sure what the deal is this time...but despite the fact they said in the paperwork that was sent homethey have had no previouls experience like this they SHOULD HAVE sent antibiotics home with him...no iffs ands or butts!!! I am hoping it does not come down to putting him down...I do not know a lot about it...but she loves him so dearly and has invested so much into him to just become gliderless due to the vets negligence. I feel they should be responsible for his vet bills (all of them!) and what she paid for him plus pain and suffereing. This outrages me and makes me sick that she barely got to know him and this is what it comes down to...juts sick. She rescued him to give him a better life. She paid good money to rescue him at that...and barely got to know her little man that she is comepletly devoted to and loves.

Nicias is no longer with us. He swelled up again and there was nothing that could be done. He tried so hard to go potty after he swelled up...and with pushing so hard he turned his entire cloacal area inside out...the pressue of it all caused bleeding. He was rushed to the vet (NOT THE E vet!), but they said there was nothing that could be done to help him or save him. They could not get his insides right again and they would not go back. She was left with no choice but to take him home and let him suffer or to put him down. She chose the more humane route and put her little boy to bed for his final nap so he has to feel no more pain. She just got this little guy at the beginning of the month. She neutered him so he could get a friend. He was a very lonely little guy...purchased from a CraigsList ad. The guy who had him did not take good care of him. Nicias was three years old and had three very sad and lonely years with his previouls owner. He loved his new mommmy so dearly! Every time she would pass by the cage...he would be right there to greet her and say hello to his new mommy that he loved so much. He did not crab or bite...was very frisky and playful...liked to cause mischief and nibble on people. Nicias will be missed and heavilly grieved. Now it will be up to us to fight for what is right and get his expenses covered. The vet was negligent and this should not have turned into this horror story it became. Anyone with input or experience...please PM Squeaky or me.

I cannot stop crying....I've been "there" before with placing your faith & the life of your suggie in an e- vet, only to end up with the same results. Nicius knows how much you LOVE him & he's grateful that someone finally does!

Thank you everyone for your support throughout Nicias's struggle. I appreciate the input everyone has given and all the good wishes during his recovery and at the end. We will be taking some sort of action against the E vet since they pretty much garbled everything up (no offense to Brenda and her baby Lan like Gwen had explained already). One of the vets that I had brought him to said that this was a freak case when it came to gliders, they had never heard nor seen anything close to Nici's condition. I almost wish he had had something more physical in a sense so they could've seen and actually done something to save him better than what they had to deal with. His inflammation was caused by his bite supposedly, other than that; they had nothing to really go on. I just wish things didn't have to end like this and that I'll never have to experience something so heartbreaking again. He was a good boy like Gwen had said, so it hurts so much to have to let someone so sweet and so innocent go (well, he was a little trouble maker sometimes ) . Thank you everyone yet again. Eventually one day I'll find a pair of gliders, so Nici hasn't deterred me from having them as friends. He will be greatly missed by my friends, family but most of all by me. Rest In Peace Nicias. I will always remember you.

ley, i am so sorry for your loss! poor little nicias may have had a lonely few years with his first owner, but he knew love and devotion to the fullest extent from his short life with you. i admire you all for fighting so valiently for this little guy. i am so furious about the care (and i use the word "care" very reluctantly because it surely doesn't seem to fit!) he was given. i will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers as you deal with this heartbreaking situation and the aftermath. they surely should be held accountable just as others here have said! i know your little nicias is in a better place now and not in anymore pain. i know you'd rather have him well and here with you, but until you are with him again some day, i can just imagine my sweet amanda up there with him giving him lots of cuddles and loves (amanda is forever 16, we lost her 2 years ago) and probably laughing hysterically at the crabby noises! she never knew about gliders at all, i know she would have loved us having them. she'll just have to love and spoil all the suggies in heaven! {{{hugs}}}

I am so sorry. I really don't know what else to say - I really had such faith in Dr. Bush and the emergency clinic. I will definitely be more wary from now on. And Nicias will be watching out for you and waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.
