Molly is sick... #450251

I got home from work this morning and went to check on the critters. Immediately, I noticed that something wasn't right with Molly.

A little history... I got Molly about 6 months ago, along with her parents. A week after arriving, her mom suddenly passed away. I took her to the vet for a necropsy and they discovered a parasite in her brain. The vet felt that is was not a threat to the other gliders, but said to keep an eye on them, just in case.

Today, Molly was circling and kind of confused looking. I took her out of her cage and examined her. On closer inspection, she is circling to her right, was unable to see, and is dehydrated. So, I call the vet and scheduled an appointment for 2:45 pm. Then, I started pushing fluids...

2:45 rolled around and the vet examined her. Her pupils are extremely constricted (to the point of being barely visible), she's dehydrated, and she's having trouble maintaining her own body temp. The vet gave her sub-q fluids, glucose, and a prescription of Clindamycin Hydrocloride. We aren't even 100% sure of what we are treating yet and the Clindamycin is a pretty harsh med, but my vet and I pretty much agree that this is Molly's only chance and there's still a very strong possibility that I might loose her frown Molly just had 2 joeys drop IP a day or two ago and after these meds, there is no doubt that she will at the very least loose her joeys.

Now, my big concern is my other gliders. Molly has been her for 6 months, she was out of quarantine and had a 'clean bill of heath'. So, all of my other gliders may have been exposed to whatever it is that's causing this. I'm scared that I'm going to loose Molly and I'm afraid that my other gliders are going to get sick... Please pray for my little Molly and all of my other babies. Whatever this illness is, it lurks, for long periods of time... For all I know, all of my gliders could be sick and I may never know, until it's too late frown

Leyna, I'm extending my prayers for strength and healing to you & all your suggies. hug2

At the VERY LEAST, I'd wash EVERYONE'S pouches and toys and whatever else in the HOTTEST WATER you possibly can. Wash cages in antibacterial dish soap and hot water. I'd be on a cleaning obsession to a degree that would SCARE my husband...

Please keep us posted.

I don't use pouches and I bleach my gliders toys and cages every time I was them... My vet doesn't think it's something that will be directly passed from glider to glider. She thinks it's something that got passed on to her from her mother (maybe my nursing?). Molly and her cage mates have been separated from my other gliders and their cage is currently soaking in bleach water...

Molly is already showing some improvement since I gave her her first does of meds.

Leyna, do they know what kind of parasite her mom had? I hope she gets better and that none of the other gliders are in any danger. If she has the same thing her mom had there has to be a way to kill the parasite before it claims any more lives.

My vet got Molly's necropsy faxed to her yesterday, so she'll know what the parasite is and how to treat it... I'm going to have to talk to my vet about financing or something, so I can take all of my gliders to the vet and get them checked out, just to make sure. While I can afford it, to get all of my gliders vet checked at once instead of a pair a month like usual, is going to totally kill my emergency vet fund... To get ALL of my gliders checked at once would cost me almost $1500!

Trust me I spent one year almost $4000 because two of my cats got sick and on shots also. Let me know if you need any help with my little guy. I will help if it does come down to that they all need treated or something for him ok?

Oh my goodness, Leyna blush I'm so sorry that little Molly is sick now cry Hopefully with your diligence and quick action she will recover quickly and completely. Please let us know the type of parasite that Molly's mother's necropsy revealed. It may be invaluable information...

Update... Well, it's been 36 hours and Molly is still standing strong. She has the runs now, but my vet told me that is to be expected with this med. Also, she pulled one of her joeys (other one is still in there)... Her pupils keep contracting up and I can tell it frustrates and confuses her, but she's eating and drinking, peeing normally, taking her meds like a pro, and we just trimmed her nails with only a little grumping at me when I grabbed her paw with the yogie (I think she thought I was going to take it from her, lol).

My vet doesn't know what the parasite is. She sent for the necropsy results from my other vet, but that was at like 4:30 on Friday and their office closes at 5 for the weekend. She's supposed to call me on Monday, so we can figure out what's going on... I'm going to take in the whole cage then for a check up. I'm hoping and praying that it's just Molly that's sick, keep your fingers crossed for me.
