I have been trying to find as much information as I can on how these beautiful glider colors come to be and as good as I (thought) I was in highschool biology (horse and buggy days) I'm still having trouble with genes, dominants, recessives, and punnetts!

Does anyone have a list of sites to read up on. I have several that I found from on GC but can anyone shed more light? (more websites?)

and I can't seem to find out where the mosaics come from - is it a combination of two colors or just a mutation that started by itself and just continued? I noticed that Mosaics and Leus are sterile alot of the times...that kind of explains to me that there may have been inbreeding somewhere???? or is this wrong yet again dunno

Can't help you, but wanted to say that your title really caught my eye! I love the punnett squares in basic biology - if you think they are confusing to understand, try teaching it smile .

I used to have such a good grasp on punnetts because at one point in my (previous) life I wanted to be a biologist! WOW I think now that I would have failed!!!! I'm just not gettin it!

Aaaaaaagh teaching those is tough to do. Explaining independent assortment is really tough.

Those dihybrid crosses, the Punnett Squares with 16 or something squares, are the ones that really kill me and mess me up.

Right now we are trying to teach natural selection and evolution to 8th graders, about half of whom don't know what a gene is...wow these kids missed out on some science in elementary school here in this city...

I loved genetics class but I had to take it 2x because I got it on homework but my tests used to kill me:) it's really not hard but it does get confusing the more variables that are added. It gets confusing when you have genes that mask other genes or like in human eye color many genes actually produce the eye color. it's all way to cool but a pain to get figured out:) lol good luck!

Jen, good luck with the 8th graders!!!! I do not envy you the task!

I love it as well but I guess its just my old age starting to creep in - because somewhere along the line all that knowledge must have seeped out of my ears when I wasn't looking... roflmao (I will blame it on ...oh boy I can't remember)

Well, my day goes one of two ways working with 143 8th graders....either they really make me smile and laugh when it's a good day, or when I come home I'm banging my head against the wall repeatedly wondering why I'm in education roflmao

Science is fun to teach though. They had a quiz on genetics today. Guess we'll see soon if they were listening or not read

And I should add...back on your original topic...

I don't know if anybody has determined a simple mode of inheritance for mosaics. I bet a breeder would know more though (where's Sheila? smile )The only pretty simply determined trait that they know for sure is that leucistic is an autosomal recessive gene (meaning the glider needs to be rr to be leucistic). All the other traits still seem somewhat questionable dunno like WF, WT, mosaic, the red colorations, etc.

I am no breeder and I do not have massive knowledge of the lines, but to the best of my knowledge some (if not many) of the leus and mosaics out there are somewhat closely related to other leus and mosaics. In order to make more leus and mosaics "line breeding" has been required to perpetuate a recessive trait (which is essentially careful inbreeding). This is likely why some of the mosaics are sterile, IMO (just based on the fact that it is well-documented in other animals that line-breeding and inbreeding can result in sterility).

*End genetics ramble. Must...start...grading...papers...*
