i am so sad. mommie has lost her joey. it was due OOP in the next 2-3 weeks.

yesterday we checked on everybody like we always do. taking them out and handling them and giving them each a treat... we play with them as they tolerate bit right now because lacy has her twin joeys that are OOP just since last weekend, and mommie still had a few weeks left for hers. ann held mommie and she mentioned that she didn't see or feel the joey moving like usual... which seemed odd... but maybe it was nothing, we dont' have a ton of experience when it comes to joeys. ann went to bed cause she has to get up at 4am and i worked on the cage, sent some emails and messages and got sucked into an old episode of CSI that i hadn't seen before. i fell aslep in the recliner, but i woke up to our little beanie girl barking like crazy! i finally turned the light on and got up to see what she was having such a fit about. all i could see was one of the gliders sitting on top of the ark we have mounted in the back corner of the monster mansion. but i couldn't tell which glider it was. whoever it was, they just froze when they saw me. they were hunched over a bit and just still as a statue! i was tired, the light wasn't the best, i wasn't sure which one it was. then the glider went back to what it was doing... and almost immediately i knew exactly who it was and what they were doing. it was mommie and she was in the process of canabalizing her joey. my heart just caught in my throat and i went and woke ann up. i didnt' know what to do. beanie was still on that same end of the cage, below and on the side of where mommie was, and she was still just barking up a storm. when i went to get ann, she quit barking. it was almost like she was trying to get our attention and once she succeeded she knew she could quit. we checked on everyone else, and would have caught mommie and taken the joey from her if we could, but she immediately went to the highest, furthest corner of the cage and continue. it broke my heart. but ann said that it must have been something wrong, remembering that she hadn't felt or seen the joey move inside mommie's pouch for a couple days, and mommie was probably just doing what nature told her to do, dispose of it. it is still upsetting, but i don't blame mommie at all. i feel bad for her having to go through that. i just wanted to come and share our loss. poor little one. don't even know if it was a boy or a girl. well, poppie is fixed. we had not planned for her to have another joey at all. she just happened to have one IP before we were able to get poppie neutered. she won't have to deal with any of it again. which both of us are glad, because we couldn't do this very much. it's too upsetting. i have see lots of posts and heard people talk about having had this happen... about finding out that one of their joeys had been canabalized... about finding a little skeleton... we knew about it always being a possibility... i just never thought i'd actually catch one in the actual process of doing it. makes my heart ache.
thanks for listening.
