I was looking at an adoption ad for a 3yo male neutered sugar glider, that has a history of having seizures in the presense of small children.

Can stress trigger seizures? Does this glider have a serious problem that needs medical attention? He seems perfectly fine otherwise and apparently this seizure has happened in the past and hasn't happened since.

I'm just curious because I don't know much about seizures in sugar gliders and I want to know what can cause such a thing.

I only read the first post (well right now, I've read it all in the past, but don't remember everything), and it's about vomiting, but it could be similar.

But he could have something neurological going on, and the stress might have triggered it. In this case, it wouldn't just be the stress, it would be deeper.

Jen Bailey (Xfilefan) has a glider who would have seizures anytime she was handled. Seizures can be caused by stress or extreme fright.

I have one glider who will always be a caged glider. He and his companion live in a 260 rept and they don't come out to play because every single time, he has a fear induced seizure. They are both very happy gliders and let me interact with them with the rept door open but won't come out on their own.

Yes, stress can cause seizures in gliders. I have a boy that has had a couple when he gets really overly excited. With him, it is also related to blood sugar, most likely (when he ate last and when his activity increases).

So this could be a link to diabetes as well?

It would probably be pretty obvious - vomitting, body convulsions. Just like any other seizure.

There are actually many kinds of seizures, (my dog has seizures too and also doesn't vomit or convulse, but they are quite different from Dakota's). With Dakota, his seizures have less obvious symptoms (but you can still plainly see something is wrong). He stiffens up slightly (no convulsions, at least not visible), his ears and eye lids droop and large drops of clear fluid drips from his nose. He starts moving in slow, slow motion. It is really scary. It takes him about 15-20 minutes to come out of it; he slowly becomes more aware of his surroundings, and his energy comes back. But he is still a little off for a couple of hours afterward. I always subQ when I first notice it and when he starts to become aware, give him some pedialyte or juice/water mix.

I would ask your vet about a relationship between diabetes and seizure. But I would think it's possible.

Yes, gliders can be diabetic or even hypoglycemic.

There are test strips that you can use (with their urine) to check for this.

If you have concerns, definately talk to your vet about this.
