So, this morning was really tough. I cried forever and my whole way to work. Spice hung on for as long as she could and I did what I thought was best for her. She fell asleep in my hands and then they took her to the back. I went to work because keeping busy always helps... it's kind of hard to dwell on things with 20 3rd graders wanting attention. Ok so here is the deal. When I went to put Spice to sleep, the vet was stuck in traffic. After an hour, I decided to let the other vet familiar with gliders take over. She was very nice and was very loving to Spice. Well, a few hours after I left I got a voicemail from her. She talked to Dr. Brinker (the vet who first started seeing Spice) and he had been doing a lot of research into Spice's case and making a lot of phone calls. They wanted to know if I would be willing to let them do a necropsy to find out exactly what happened and possibly why. She left me a convincing VM about how it would be for the good of all gliders to find out these answers and possibly help others. Little did she know that there was no convincing needed! I'm all for finding out exactly what happened, especially if it could be something genetic and Sugar might get it. I finally talked to Dr. Brinker and he is excited (not about Spice) because he has a pathologist who has done over 40 necropsies on gliders and many with similar symptoms as Spice. She has been doing research into this and is trying to find more answers. Apparently, she is wondering if it runs in a family of gliders or if whatever the issue is can affect all gliders. It just sounds interesting to me, so it will take till next week to find some answers, but if anything is found I will let you all know! Thank you all for your support during this difficult time. I am still second guessing if I could have done anything else to save her, but I know in my heart that I did what was best for her (I just wish my head would shut up). I was more at peace when I heard the vet wanted to do a necropsy to find out more and possibly help other gliders. Hopefully some good will come out of this. For now, I'm just going to spend as much time with Sugar as she will let me. She has been very skittish this evening and doesn't want to come too close to me. So I'm just feeding her mealies and licky treats while she is in her cage. I miss my little cuddler already!

I am so sorry for your loss Colleen. It will be a wonderful tribute to Spice if the vets are able to learn from her illness. Karin

Colleen, thank you for giving the vets permission to do the necropsy. I know that losing Spice has been very painful to you and hopefully, as you said, the vets will be able to learn and help other gliders in the future. You are a wonderful lady and a true inspiration to the rest of us

Thank you everyone for you thoughts and hugs! I'm trying to spend as much time with Sugar as she will let me and trying not to think about my sweet Spice. I will update every one as soon I hear anything from the necropsy.
