What color should a mosaic be paired with? #485917

I may be getting a mosaic (not oop yet). What color of glider would be the best to pair it with in order to get the best results...mosaic, and light colored?

I think mosaics have been paired with grays and made gorgeous babies. There isn't a need to pair the mosaic with another colored glider, if you don't want to.

It really depends... My understanding is this, if it has the mosaic coloring with no other distinct colors displayed (such as white face) you can pair them with just about any color. However, if it is displaying another co-dominant coloring, such as the WF, you don't want to pair them with another glider of that same co-dominant trait (such as a WF Mosaic with a WF normal). The co-dominant gene could overpower the mosaic gene, and hide it.

For example, the Mosaic Ringtail that I am getting is a WF/25-33% leu het/ringtail mosaic. I am pairing her with a 66% leu het male. I was going to pair her with a WF male, but I was advised against it since the WF gene could overpower the mosaic gene

The father of the baby I may be getting is a very white champagne mosaic and is paired with a wf blond and the last baby they made was a ring tail with white hands. I was just wondering how I could pair this baby up so that I might get a mosaic that looks more like its father with a lot of white.

The mosaic gene seems to be completely random. I have a ringtail mosaic (that looks like a completely normal gray except for one white ring on his tail) produce a platinum mosaic joey. I have also had platinum mosaics that have produced mosaics with little white on them. The mosaic gene can manifest itself different every time a joey is conceived. That's all you need is the gene in order to produce gorgeous babies. A mosaic parent does not need to be platinum in order to produce platinum. That is what is so fascinating. You can't buy a platinum mosaic thinking you have batter chances of producing platinum mosaic babies, as it is completely random and you have no guarantee that it will happen. It very well may, but you do not have a guarantee that it will.

Laura, that is interesting about the wf theory. I have never heard that.

Laura, the WF gene can be expressed at the same time as the mosaic gene, so obviously the WF gene does not mask the mosaic gene... You can pair a WF with your mosaic and get plenty of mosaic babies still, it will just up your chances of having WF mosaics.

Are you wanting light-colored mosaics? If so, you can pair the mosaic with a high generation WF or with a leu or leu het and the odds of having light-colored gliders will increase since high-gen WFS are usully lighter and 100% leu hets often have lighter fur as a result of the leu gene.

Why would you want to pair a mosaic with a leu?

There are no genetic benefits from pairing mosaics to leus. Actually on the contrary. There are some sterility issues with the mosaic lines and by pairing a female from sterile lines with a male leu, you could be introducing sterility into leu lines... That's just my 2 cents.

I personally have my mosaic McFly paired with a dark WF female. Xanadu, I plan on pairing with 2 BB females.

my leu boy CK is going to be put with a mosaic ringtail girl Camilla, I don't see any harm in it, and as long as they're from unrelated lines, you're breeding out the leu lines wink

Becki, what Leyna says applies to the sterile lines only. We don't want to be introducing the sterility to the leucistic line if we don't have to.

I have heard people say the thing about highter gen WF's possibly dominating the mosaic gene, but I don't beleive it to be true. Kris DeRose has a 4th gen WF male paired with a mosaic female and so far they have had 5 WF joeys, 3 of which were also WFB. I just think it increases the chances of having WF mosaic babies.

I have my mosaic, Naomi, paired to a lion which is thought to be a dominant gene, so far she has given me 2 mosaics out of 4 babies. My mosaic, Envy, will be paired with a light WF male from mosaic lines.

I plan on pairing my future mosaics with leus(and visa versa). The boy I'm getting is a WFB mosaic/50% leu het from the Mac and cheese line(Mac and Cheese are his grandparents) so there is no sterility.

I will be breeding the mosaics with leus/leu hets to breed out the leu line as well as to get the lighter coloring. wink

I also plan on trying to breed mosaics and other colors, such as cinnies) in an attempt to get colors mosaics. smile I know it's a long-shot, but I think it's worth it.

The father of the baby I may get is Paradox from The Pet Glider. He has a leu in his lineage and I was told he is from a producing line. I do not know if I will get a mosaic or not. Paradox and his mate have a joey due oop in about 5 wks. If it is a mosaic, I am getting it. I am just considering my options should I get it.

I'm getting a mosaic, I was planning on putting her with my 4th gen wfb, in hopes of getting very light wf mosaics......

now I'm concerned that the wfb will be what I get instead.

so far it seems to be 50/50 on what people are saying.

No. There are no hets for mosaic. The glider must be mosaic to have the gene and pass it on to its offspeing.

I'm no expert but from what I know or have learned it's just like the WF.

The Mosaic color variation is dominate so if the variation is present in the glider the color of the variation will be visible. If the glider is not showing the mosaic variation than it is not mosaic. If I'm wrong please correct me.

The WF is either recessive or recessive dominant (I can't remember) and can be homozygous by breeding WF to WF for several generations. So breeding a 5th gen to a gray you'd get WF every time.

The Mosiac is dominant and no matter how many generations you breed you may still get grays that don't carry it. You could breed a 5th gen Mosiac to a gray and may get both gray babies. It's "luck of the Punnet's Square" with Mosiacs. Only a quarter of the babies have a chance of inheriting it from one parent, and half the babies if they have two mosiac parents.

My little ring tailed mosiac is with a 3rd gen wfb. He is just a wee one still (10 weeks) so time will tell what will come of the pairing.

Honestly...I LOVE the unknown factor of it all!

I thought it was that 50% of the babies will be mosics(with just one mosaic pair). At least, that's what I've always heard.

Oooooo...I want to see your 3rd gen WFB mosaic!!! I'll bet he's a beauty! My mosaic boy I'm getting is a 2.5 gen WFB mosaic/50% leu het and is SOOOO light! Sheila even thought at one point that he might be a platinum(close, but no cigar tounge. He's still a beauty though!)!

My favorite thing about mosaics is the "unkown factor" as well. Not only do you never know if you'll get a mosaic joey, but you also never know what it will look like! My boy has hardly any white, but for all I know his babies could have a TON of white! grin It's so exciting!
