I have a baby glider that has cataracts on both of her eyes.
It is unknown just how impaired her site is at this time but she will eventually be totally blind. Her doctor recommends a smaller cage for her with maybe one roommate. Does anyone have any suggestions on the size and/or shape of cage that would be good for her? Also, do you think she will use an exercise wheel?
Thanks for your help.

I would NOT necessarily get a smaller cage.

One of my gliders is mostly blind due to cataracts in his youth (which our vet thinks was caused by a problematic diet before we got him). We have him in a cage that is about 2x3x5' tall, and he LOVES all the extra space. His previous owner had him in a small cage, and he was VERY happy when he moved to the bigger one.

I think having a wheel is good. Zeus uses the wheel, although more slowly than my other gliders. She will learn to use it if she wants to, and if not...what harm can it do?

One thing that would probably be helpful to her that I have seen for other disabled gliders is to possibly have some hammocks strung across the cage somewhat just in case she jumps in the cage and misses/falls. When we let Zeus out to play, we need to string "vines" (made of fleece) up across the room so he can navigate his way...he doesn't really jump a lot obviously, so keeping the playroom routine for him helps him immensely. I bet she'll get the hang of her cage and the tent/playroom you have pretty quickly and feel at ease.

What diet are your gliders on? I'm sure cataracts can be caused by issues unrelated to diet (I've heard some are just born this way), but it's worth asking.

Best of luck to you, and welcome to GC! wave

Since she can see somewhat right now I would still provide her with a nice large cage & wheel.
The only accomaodations I would make are to not change things in her cage. Keep everything in the same places.

She will learn where everything is and rememeber her envirerment. I have heard of gliders with vision loss still using wheels.

Animals can amaze you they learn to aclimate to survive.

that's my opinion anyway, maybe someone with a visially disabled glider will come along to add more from experience.

Good luck with her. smile

Jen,
Thanks for a advice.
I've been reading about the BML diet but I am concerned with giving my gliders grapes and corn.
I can't find any info. on the BML diet that wasn't written in 2006 so far on this site. Remember that I am new and still checking out how to get around in GliderCentral.

Currently my gliders have two kinds of pellets that I purchased for two different glider stores. They don't care for them much. They also get boiled chicken and some meal worms a few times a week as a treat, loads of fresh fruits and vegies, juice (Guanabana is their favorite)and maple syrup.
I actually grow broccoli plants because they like the leaves.
Any food suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lorraine

Lorraine,
I found you! roflmao Glad to see you here on the board wave
In my e-mail I sent you this morning, I recommended that you make sure the cage is no smaller than 36"h x 24"w x 18"d. You can make No Sew Shelf Hammocks to put at intervals in the cage (as per the post that I linked to you) to be safe in case of falls.
I do recommend putting a wheel in her cage and giving her a companion as well.
Personally, I have been feeding my gliders Back to Basics BML for over two years with great success. If you wash the grapes beforehand, then you shouldn't have any issues with them. Also, the BML diet was tested using the specific list of fruits & veggies so that we KNOW the calcium & phosphorus ratios are in balance; therefore, you don't need to worry about the corn.
