About lice treatments...
Last weekend, my stepdaughter brought home lice. Her daddy got them, and then I got them from him. I have NEVER dealt with this issue, even though I am told it is pretty common to happen. According to the directions of the Ridd kit, you wash, gel and comb...and Spray your house with their lice-killing spray to kill anything that has "fallen" off onto floors or furniture. I took my trio, Rocky, Alli and Goliath, and hubby sprayed the house while I took kids home. Came home, cleaned cage and moved to another room so they wouldn't have any contact with said pesticide spray. Monday comes along, and my sister finds more live bugs AFTER I have spent two days cleaning from top to bottom, washing everything I have in my home that was washable. So I start all over, this time moving my crew outside (it wasnt too warm for them at that time) so I could again spray the carpets and furniture for these nasty parasites. When I went to bring them back in, my little Goliath was gone. The stress of being moved so much, cage being moved and maybe even the treatments were too much for him. His system, already fragile from liver problems over the past year or so, just couldn't take it and he passed on. Although I know he is in a better place, and he is feeling 100% now, I miss him terribly. He was always the first to pop up at feeding time and try to eat all the corn first, he was the first to run to greet me in the mornings at playtime. He was also only 3 years old.
What I wish I had known was that all of that was unnecessary, the spraying and moving them in and out, long car rides and being shuffled all over the house After calming down somewhat, I finally went online and started searching about head lice. According to the Division of Parasitic Diseases Vacuum the floor and furniture. Do not use fumigant sprays; they can be toxic if inhaled.
According to HeadLice.org: Head lice do not jump or fly and generally cannot survive longer than 24 hours off a human host. Other sites say up to two days, but if you avoid the areas, then they die and cannot re-infest anyone. It's also stated several times that they have to crawl from hair to hair to infest someone else, or by using the same brush, etc. There are alot of informational sites out there I wish I would have looked at first, and they all say basically the same things. Don't Spray these pesticides in your homes, lice cannot live off their human hosts long, and treatments should only be concentrated on the infected person and what they have touched themselves, like linens, pillows, brushes, etc. To treat your whole house is unnecessary.
If I hade known this, my boy would still be with us today, instead of stressed to death because I panicked and over-reacted, basically, I killed him. The reason I post this is 1. - to say goodbye to my baby boy; and 2 - to maybe help someone else out who may have a similar occurrence, only thru this story they will know better and will be able to treat without endangering their gliders, or any other pets they may have.
Good bye sweet boy, I know you are happy and whole now, and playing with the rest of the crew gone before you. I will see you on the Other Side...

I am sorry for your loss. Please do not blame yourself. By moving them, you were trying to protect them. I believe all creatures, human and otherwise, have a set time in this world. When our time is up, it is up. It matters not who/what we are, who we love, or who loves us. Believe that we go to a better place and when our time to go comes, it is the way it is meant to be. The way we go is not relevant. This is not your fault and you did not kill him. He was loved and he knew it. He came running to you to play because he KNEW you loved him.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us so that we may learn. May time go quickly for you so that the pain is soon replaced with smiles from good memories.

Hopefully by sharing your story, this can be avoided should it ever come up in the future for someone else. Don't be so hard on yourself, you thought you were doing the right thing protecting them. I just feel so bad for you .

Sweetie, you were trying to protect your babies from parasites---that's what counts.
I'm sorry to hear of your loss, but the love you gave him (& still give him now by remembering him) is such a great gift! Every animal that walks this earth deserves a loving person in their lives, and you are special indeed!

Melissa, I'm so sorry for your loss, but I'm not convinced from your post that his death was necessarily related to the spraying, or even from the stress of being moved. It could have just been a sad coincidence, since his liver was already compromised.
I'm so sorry.
