(Note: I did a search and saw nothing about this for specifics on New Jersey, or just laws in the USA in general)

I currently reside in New Jersey and am interested in purchasing a Sugar Glider as a pet.

I have seen a few things on this website about having a license to own one, also something about a permit. Are these two the same? I do believe the license is for breeding and selling sugar gliders....but a permit...I am not to sure if there is a difference.

Thanks.

So I need to acquire a permit. Have any helpful information that might assist me in my search for a permit?

I checked http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/stateres.html#NJ but says unknown.

I appreciate your help.

you need to be USDA licensed if you have more than 3 females (unspayed dogs, cats, etc also are counted in this number). As far as I know there are no license requirements in NJ, but, you can always call your city/county officials and check wink

I used to live in New Jersey and my father still lives there.
I know several people that own gliders in New Jersey the only license that you need is a usda to breed and sell if you own more then 3 females.

Sorry to be a pain. So if I get one or two gliders female or male...I do not need a permit or a license at all? Just clarifying.

You need to contact the wildlife department to get a wildlife permit to own. $10 a year and be warned there are restrictions! You need a separate license to breed.
Call the wildlife and game commission at 908-735-5450.

when that whole legislature thing was going on talking about banning exotics I researched it quite well.
On the permit itself it states "not allowed to come in contact with the public" and "animal not to leave the home except when caged"

any questions feel free to PM me

Jill,

Thank you for posting this information. I just learned about SGs and was doing a lot of research to determin if they are right for me. So far, so good. Still doing more research to make sure I can provide them the best home possible.

I reside in NJ and someone I told about them asked me if they were legal. I never even thought about it. So I'm glad I came across your post. I will look into it next week and will post any updates I find out on the process. I'm not looking to breed. I only want to adopt 2 or 3.

Thanks again.

Joey

In the State of NJ you need to have a permit to own a Suger Glider. If you want to do anymore than that you need a license. Nj has its own license and then you have the USDA license. If you have MORE than 3 breeding females you need the USDA License.

We are in the process of getting our license so we can take in Rescues and Rehome them to good loving homes. (Standby for future post on this).

When my wife was talking to NJ wildlife and game office, they stated that we would be only the 2nd people in the State of New Jersey that would have there Class B license. The funny thing is that both of us live in Ocean County.
