I was wondering what is the success rate of a Trio truly getting along? The trio consisting of one male and two females.
My main concern is with the male being unneutered and the effects he would have on the females health wise.
I want to make sure there is no stress to either females. when they come in heat or if one gets pregnant.

I heard someone say that the dominant female would steal the other females joeys if she gets pregnant. Is it true?

I would appreciate any advice regarding trios and ppl experience with them.

There are very few incidences of successful trios. Often, there will be one dominant female who will kill the other females joeys. Sometimes she will pull them while they are still ip. Other times she will kill them after they are oop.

I would guess at a success rate of 25%-50%. In the few cases they work out, it is usually when the girls are twin sisters, together from birth.

I have a trio of two females, and a male, who were a breeding trio with their previous owner, and she said she never had problems. Both females were pregnant when I got them, and only one joey made it. I dont know if one pulled the others, or what happened, but the 2nd joey WAS "disposed of". Other than that - they all get along fine. But like I said, I dont know what happened with the joey. If mom pulled it, or the other female pulled it.

I have a trio that get along wonderfully. The two females are sisters and very laid back. So far the one sister has had one joey the other has two still in pouch. There is never any crabbing or fights.
I know that is not how most turn out but these gliders are very laid back.

Sorry to threadjack, but, Samantha, what do you mean "pulled", when referencing the joeys?

(And yes, that's your pouch they're in in my avatar pic. Thanks!)

wat i have been told is that the dominant female , unless really bonded with the other female. would be the competitor, and will actually pull out the joeys of her competitor and prevent her from having joeys of her own.

And do what with them? I looked, but didn't find an answer...

***Side note*** I'm watching this thread closely, because, I too, have a trio consisting of one male and two females. I've had the male neutered, but I think one of the females (Toph) may have joeys IP...

My guess is that the joey takes the joeys out at such an early time that they do not make it. but the farther along the joeys that u have are ip the greater chance of having them survive.

Do ur females fight?

Meaning that they dipose of- they remove the joey, with intentions to NOT let it live...

Also - my trio is NOW not doing well. I AM going to have to remove Yoyo from the cage, and put her in alone. Both of the females have joeys IP, and now I am finding that Rhea is "bullying" yoyo, and so I DO believe she is trying to dominate her, and probably DID pull yoyo's joey last time... I dont want that to happen this time, so yoyo will be removed, and once her joeys are bigger, I will get her a friend.

Samantha,
wouldn't it be better to try to find Yoyo a mate before the babies oop?
The mommy needs a mate to help with the babies. I have read about mothers losing or rejecting their young when the mate dies because of too much stress.

yes, the father IS an active part of joeys being born BUT - Another male going in with her NOW, would ALSO cause stress with intros, as well as the fact that he is not the father, which means I would be at risk of him pulling the joeys as well. so no. It is NOT best to get her a mate before the joeys are born. I will just have to do a LOT of babysitting! lol

I didn't know males would pull joeys too. I guess you will have to be a surrogate daddy! roflmao
Snuggling with the babies is fun!

yeah, they also pull sometimes. If he didnt pull, then he might just kill them when they come oop. Its hard, because even when introducing a joey to an adult, you should wait until they are closer in size. Larger gliders may tend to bully smaller gliders, so i just dont think it would be a good idea.

My gliders don't fight at all, at least not as far as I know. They get along pretty well, I think. Are there any telltale signs I should be looking for? I don't hear them scuffling at all, and their cage shares a wall with my bedroom, so I hear them at night, barking and moving around, but nothing that seems out of the ordinary.

Well, mine were all fine to begin with, and have always been together. Just recently they started with the crabbing at each other, and then this morning is when I saw that Rhea was bullying Yoyo, which is why I am choosing to remove her. I would say that as long as you dont see or hear any bullying, you are ok. IF you do have one female get pregnant, just keep a close eye, and be sure what is going on, so you dont end up losing the joey/s. Good luck, and I hope your trio works out!

Unfortunately, by pulling her and putting her in her own cage, you also risk that she will become stressed and pull and kill her own babies. You will be seperating her from her friend and mate while she has joeys ip and there is a huge chance that the joeys will not make it. It is a gamble either way.

Good luck!

yeah, I know that I am taking a chance no matter what I do. I have also decided that I am going to pull Rhea, instead of Yoyo. I KNOW that Rhea has been a wonderful mommy before, and I DONT know about yoyo.... SO I think it would be best to leave Yoyo with Zeus, and Take Rhea out. She is stronger, and knows more about motherhood. I think she would have a better chance than yoyo to be seperated.

The thing is - by leaving them, I KNOW that yoyo's babies have no chance. I also know that Rhea is already being mean, and bullying yoyo. IF I remove her, there IS a chance that both could have healthy babies. I am setting up my extra rept right now, and plan to remove Rhea today, or tonight. I will have her with me all day during the day, and when the joeys come OOP, I will be live in babysitter, so to speak...

I just TRULY think that this will be my BEST chance to let them both have healthy joeys, that will survive. I cant let Rhea pull anymore of Yoyo's babies. I have to try.

To reduce stress put some toys from the original cage to her new rept setup . and place Rheas new cage next to her old one. hopefully everyone does fine.

Yeah, I plan to keep them next to each other, UNLESS I see that it causes more stress. I thought that way they could at least still smell and see each other too. We'll see what happens. Maybe she just needs a break... Its tough being prego!
