I was on the Exotic Nutrition website earlier, and saw their pure Acacia Gum for gliders. Has anyone here ever given it to their gliders, and if so, did they like/dislike it?

Just wondering! smile

I bought some and mixed it with the water like they said on the pkg and the gliders wouldn't touch it. I also sprinkled it on some fruit- they wouldn't eat the fruit. Mine are picky anyway, but was surprised they didn't like it.

Mine LOVE it. If I put it on their food, they lick it off before they eat it.

None of mine will touch it. I tried in the water, tried making the 'paste' (man is that stuff sticky) and sprinkled it on food (they wouldn't even eat the mealies when I tried sprinkling it on them!! OMG!!) I guess my little buggers are spoiled and know how to 'work' me to get what they want! lol

Mine never particularly liked it either when I mixed it up with water. Never tried just adding it to the food. I have tried adding a little to the PML mix. Note: A little goes a LONG way. I once added 1 tsp to a batch and turned the whole thing to silly putty.

I mix it into a paste and put it in holes drilled in branches. The top dries, so they chew at it to get to the paste. Mine have always liked it. dunno

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.

Mine LOVE it!

I buy straws, cut them into 2-inch pieces, slit them open on one side, them smear some acacia gum "paste" into them. Then I freeze them in a freezer bag and hand them out as treats. The next day I'll find the straws licked clean in the bottom of the cage, lol.

I wonder if putting it in the straws would make a difference (I would just put it on the tray and as I said, very sticky! lol) May have to order more and see....

I think it does make a difference because my gliders LOVE straws so by putting it in straws it's gauranteed to catch their interest. Also, mine normally like to stick their tongues in straws too, so now when they stick their tongue inside they'll find the treat. smile

I want to try this! I got acacia gum and they won't touch it... I've even dusted it on mealies and they try to shake the mealies clean before eating them.

They don't hurt themselves on the straw edges? When you slit the straws open do you cut a strip out so the edges don't touch or is it just a single cut? I've gotten papercuts from straws before, I'm worried they'd get their toes or tongues cut up on straws. Or am I being a total worrywart?

How much acacia gum to water to make a paste? It always goes clumpy when I add it to water, how do you get it smooth/mixed fully?

I use the cheap, thin straws, not the thick, tough ones. That way they won't snap shut on the gliders' tongue or toe, lol. When I slit the straws, rather then closing back together, one side tends to fold over the other.

My gliders will lick as much as they can, then pull open the slit with both "hands" and lick out the inside. I've never had any problems. wink

I put just enough water so that it mixes with all the powder and it forms a thick paste, like playdough almost. It's less sticky that way and easier to handle. I get a good-sized dab on my finger, open the straw, then smear it inside. smile

Thank you! I've got a package of these thin, clear straws and I just tested one, they do overlap at the edges when they're split. Am trying this tonight. smile

Well, Mishka's indifferent to the acacia gum straws, but Crichton LOVES them. He grabs them all and goes to hide and chew on them, and glares and runs off if anyone gets too close, as if we're going to try to steal them for ourselves. thanks Happy, happy suggie here.
