Ok someone correct me if the new additions are updated but I have one of the books that is 6 months old and its NOT. I read that book a long time ago and a lot of the information is wrong and downright harmful. I got an email from someone stating that they seperated their joey from its mom at 4 weeks OOP because it said that the joey could be seperated around 3-4 weeks after the joey opened its eyes. I wanted to scream. I know a lot of people sell this book on their websites and I STRONGLY believe it should be pulled off. I mean that one piece of bad information about seperating the joey at 4-6 weeks OOP is harmful enough!

It came with a rescue I got a few months ago. I sat down a read it to see what information it had in it. UGH it was horrible, it wasn't til later after visiting others websites I noticed a lot of credible breeders/vendors with that book listed. I couldn't believe it but this recent email has REALLY upset me.

Oh, wow, I saw this on a few breeder sites and I can't figure out why they'd want to promote those kind of practices. Weird, huh?

It was probably the first book on gliders published. The information was correct at the time, but needs to be updated.

One question? How old is a glider when the eyes actually open? I thought that was 2 weeks OOP, at least. If you wait four weeks from the EYES OPENING, you are much closer to 6 weeks, which has been an acceptable age until recently. The book DOES NOT promote pulling babies at 4 weeks OOP - it is 4 weeks after the EYES OPEN.

eye opening ages vary, I've had joeys as early as 5 days and as long as 14 days OOP. The one that opened her eyes @ 5 days is now 6 weeks, and even now is no even close to being able to be pulled from her mom.

Oh man I borrowed glider books from my public Library.
They were awful! If I'd had the money I would have just not turned them in.

Since I didn't I actually wrote in them! I've NEVER done anything like that before.

That is one of the things that prompted me to get an updated book out there, even though things change with these guys so much.

Every time I would take in a rescue or rehome and talked with them they had ALL read her book and others...just outdated information...

I have heard though that she is updating a book and it is supposed to come back out??? Not sure if that is the one you are talking about or not...

Well I understand that these were "old" practices but they SHOULDN"T be in circulation anymore and I don't think vendors should be selling them either

Average date is 2 weeks Im not really sure WHY this person pulled the joey so soon maybe they thought 4 week OOP was 4 weeks after eyes opened?? dunno But either way 6 weeks is still way to early

There are A FEW (VERY FEW MIGHT I ADD) sections that COULD be used for GUIDANCE ONLY (for instance, the safe plants vs. dangerous plants list) but definitely NOT a valid reference book to be used as "do it this way" kind of thing.

I passed that book on to someone long long time ago & literally stapled shut the "diet" section, put a big "X" through it & said DON'T EVEN LOOK AT THIS PART, it's NOT VALID INFO!! I think I went through other parts & did the same thing. Now, if one were to look at the "rejected joey" section, my memory says the part about the "incubator" is a good GUIDANCE ONLY thing...but when it comes down to brass tacks, I lean much more heavily on SugarGliderSuz's info than the book.

But this is all stuff we glider slaves learn through reading ON THIS WEBSITE and experiencing first-hand the ups & downs of actually having them.

Thus ends my 2 cents' worth.

I know of a great DIY publishing site that if someone wanted to create a new glider book it would be awesome.. hardbound or soft, it isn't cheap but the quality is great.
haven't read this book you're talking about though...

Sabrika, With help from some great people on here, we have already done this.

It would be awesome if there were more than one updated (or as updated as one could be) book out there for the public though.
