May I ask how much you think your cage (construction - bare bones) cost you? I want to see if it would be cost effective for me...Thank you!

For all the wire and zip ties total it was about $150 - $200 and I have enough wire to build 4-5 more cages, so it will cheaper if you get a smaller role of wire.

Thank you, I think I'll be making my babies' new cages...I know you said that you bought it at a feed store, but where else can you find the materials? Like would a home improvement store have it? Also how did you make doors? Sorry for all the questions...but I would wind up with a box with no doors!! Silly me...hehe

oh ask away, what I did is laid the wire out in 7 foot strips and then cut it, once I had all 4 pieces (the wire is already 36" wide so 3 feet about), then I started putting the sides together with zip ties, can also use metal cage ties if your babies chew, once all that was together I made the shelves and zip tied them inside as well, then I put the bottom and top on and stood it up and cut out the door. I them cut a piece of metal larger than the opening of the door so that I had the overlap and I zip tied hinges on the door, I also got the plastic or rubber tubing and lined the door cause it was sharp. I made sure there were no sharp edges inside and then I had a metal shop make me a stand and a tray for the newspapers and wastes to go into. I am sure if home depot doesn't sell the wire, you can have them order it or try ace hardware also. have fun I did and my babies love their cage as do I.

Out of curiosity, Stakerk, what is the gauge of the wire?

I don't know, its not super thick but its not thin either, I can look at the receipt and try to find out.

The reason I asked is because the wire on your gliders' cage looks thinner than the 16 gauge wire that is used on my gliders' cages. Very likely the wire is 18 or maybe 20 gauge wire. I am still curious about the gauge of the wire you used, though.

I don't know what guage it is, and my gliders are not chewers so it has been good and the spacing is good too, so they can't slip out, infact its better spacing than in my old cage. I really don't know, not sure how I could find out either. Any ideas.

I have another suggestion. I also have rabbits and get catalogs for them and they wire in rolls in there also. I can get website addresses for them if you would like. Please let me know. they have all kinds of gauges in there and other supplies for building cages also.

Oh, please do share! We are always looking for more PVC-coated wire suppliers so we can compare prices, as well as shipping charges. We have a wire supplier that many of us use, and that is Klubertanz, out of Edgerton, WI. I do not know if this wire supplier is the same as you are thinking of. If not, then by all means do share whatever information you have of other wire suppliers. It is greatly appreciated by all of us here at GC!

on the first site I saw they do have vinal coated wire with 1/2 inch by 1 inch but they only sell it in 100 foot rolls.

I didn't see any thing on the second site that was vinal or pvc coated. Only galvanized.

At the Bass Equip. site, they sell only 24" and 30" PVC 16 gauge wire, in 100 ft. rolls.

At the Da-Mar's site, they sell 24", 30", and 36" PVC 16 gauge wires, both in 100 ft. rolls and custom-cut sizes.

At the Klubertanz site, they sell 18", 24", 30", 36" and 48" PVC 16 gauge wires, as well as 14 gauge wire in 24", 30" and 36". Their wires come in 100 ft., 50 ft. and partial rolls.

All of the wires listed above come in 1"x1/2" bar spacings, though they do have 1/2"x1/2" pvc-coated wire for shelves.

I bought mine in a 100Ft roll and I have tons left over. I don't buy from Klubertanz any more because I ordered a tray from them and they sent me the wrong size. I then called them and said its the wrong size and they said well you must of ordered it wrong, I said no my dimensions are here plain as day and I called over the phone to place the order you guys made a mistake, why should I pay to send it back. Well, after a long drawn out battle, I paid to ship it back. Now my first order was almost $60.00 with shipping, it was another $35.00 to ship it back due to the size of the box and then they gave me a credit of $10.00 becuase they said the tray was damaged when it got back to them, when all I did was take it out of the box test it found out it was the wrong sixe put it back in the same box and shipped it back. So I no longer will buyt from them.

Thanks for the above websites, they are perfect. I got my wire from my local feed store. they ordered it for me and when it came in I picked it up and that was that.

Good luck in your cage building endeavours, I know mine love it. If I could build a bigger one I would , but I have plans in my new house to build a garden atrium, with a garden window over my tub looking out into the atrium, and thats where my gliders will live, it will be screened in and also glassed in on on the outside so they will feel like they are in the wild. I can't wait, pretty sad I will build a house around my animals. But I sure do love them. The plans are being drawn up now.
