Spunky had one of his anal glands removed Thursday, April 10, 2008. He came out of surgery fine but managed to chew out two of his stitches while spending the night at the vet. He had to put him out again Friday to restitch and flush site. Spunky was doing well yesterday but then had a hard time pooping. He managed to poop but then had a little diarreah. Today a lot of diarreah. And I think the site is infected. It has a very foul smell. We've been trying to keep it clean but don't want to wet it so it's been a real problem. Plan to take him back to the vet tomorrow to see if we can put him on a different antibiotic. He's on Baytril now and Metacam for pain. He has round the clock care and sleeps with his collar on in bed with us in case he manages to remove it. The site looks really bad. I tried to send the picture but can't get the file size small enough. I pray he is strong enough to endure this. He is eating a little will give him wormies in a little while.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the diarreah? He wouldn't eat the chicken I tried to give him but did eat a little chicken baby food and a few pieces of corn.

Try a flake or two of old fashioned uncooked oatmeal or plain pumpkin, not the kind you make pies with. I don't think I would wait until tomorrow. I would a least call his vet and tell him what's going on. He may want you to bring him in now. Please keep us posted!

You've been given some excellent advice. Also, make sure that he is getting plenty of fluids, so that he doesn't become dehydrated. The medication that he is on will cause diarrhea so it should start to clear up in a few days.
Sending your baby lots of hugs and prayers.

Spunky Update
Spunky Still has diarreah but he is active and will eat his wormies, crickets, and chicken baby food - not much else. I've been giving him a dilluted Pedialite mixture, water, and of course his favorite, Glideraide. His incision is healing but slowly. I think because it gets soiled so much with the messy pooping. I've been squirting Neosporin on it, vet says that would be O.K. Still has the collar but still hates it. He'll be on the antibiotics for at least another week. One week down, one to go! Just thrilled he is still with us and recouperating at a decent pace.

Please know that metacam should NOT be used more than three days as it is very hard on the liver. Torb would be a better pain med to use.

Binx was on oral Buprenex post op-plus 3 days of Metacam to start. There hasn't been an update, hoping your little guy is continuing to recover and doing okay.
