Ok, so I got my glider neutered on Wednesday and he would not keep the e collar that the vet gave him on. he would just get out of it everytime. I got him home and he got it off and he went for the incision and it started bleeding and I freaked out and took him back. They ended up just putting gauze and tape over the incision. They changed it for me too on thursday. I went to change it tonight and could not get it to go on the way they had it. So, I decided to put the e collar that is described on this site on him. Right now he has not gotten it off but he is [censored]. He will not do anything but yank at it. He wont eat or drink.

Should I just take it off?

How long do you have to worry about them getting at the site? Its been 3 days but it still has stitches because they cut his whole sack off. It looks much better but should I worry about him grooming himself and ripping it?

I just dont know what to do. Please help.

You need to keep the e collar on until his incision has healed up. They will go after the slightest irritation.
You'll probably have more success with the collar with 2 people until you get used to it, and he stops fighting so hard. Have the second person hold the glider down with thumbs along the spine, and you'll kind of need to (GENTLY) pull his head toward you so he doesn't scrunch his neck to get the collar wrapped around-then tape. It can take a few tries to get it straight. If you can just get it on, and let him fight it out (a blanket on the floor works), he should be calmer later to reposition it if it doesn't come off.

Will he stop fighting after a while? He has not gotten it off. It is slightly crooked but I am not risking redoing it. How long do you think it will take to heal? Im wondering now if I should just try wrapping it again. It worked for the first 3 days if I can just get it right.

Most Gliders will fight it for awhile.
It depends on how long it takes for his surgical site to heal. Usually things start looking good in about a week.
You can try and trim back some of the e collar edge under his chin, to help with his abiltiy to eat and drink.
You also can purchase special feeding dishes that will help too.

I couldn't stand it anytmore. I had to take it off and wrap him up. It worked better this time. I feel better.

I also was wondering. I gave him metacam for 3 days but I had an extra dose because they gave him the first one when I took him back to the vet. Could I give him the last one (4th day) or will it cause problems? I thought I read that somewhere.

Is he acting like he is in pain? If so, I don't feel that one more dose isn't going to hurt anything. Metacam can cause liver problems is given to often.

I just wanted to say thank you to those who responded and let you know that Ditto is all healed up and back with Duncan. He does look a little beat up though because the medical tape wrap rubbed some of his fur off in places. I'm just glad its all over and everything is back to normal!
