I don't know what to do. I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow at 11AM. Let me tell you the history. My Glider, Victoria, is about 11 years old. About a year ago, I found a lump on her chest/abdomen area. It was about an inch long and about half an inch wide, HUGE. I was very scared. I took her to the vet and had it removed. The vet did pathology on the mass that she removed and said that it was a benign lipoma (tumor made of fatty tissue). Victoria recovered well and had been normal ever since. Until now, now her belly is filling up with some kind of fluid. It was subtle at first and I didn't really know if it was happening for sure. About a week ago I noticed that her belly seemed full. I started taking her with me to work again because my mother said that she wasn't eating as well as usual. Now, I'm sure that there is a major problem. Her belly is quite big and she isn't nearly as spunky as normal. She does eat but she eats smaller amounts more often now, and she doesn't eat her BML (leadbeater's) at all anymore. She does go poo and pee still, but there is a very strange odor - almost smells like beer? Her poo seems smaller and has the same horrible odor. I think that it may be that they were wrong about the tumor before and it was cancer. Maybe now what I'm seeing is cancer that has spread to her liver. I have read some of the posts on here about other causes. But I would really like some advise. I'm very scared and upset - she is my sweet lil girl. Any advise that you think may be helpful would be very appreciated Thanks, Holley 1 glider (Victoria - 11 years old)

Honey, other than getting to a vet RIGHT NOW and saying prayers that you can do this...I don't know what else to say. Is there any way that you can find someone TONIGHT to help her? Or at the VERY WORST be there when the vet's office opens tomorrow morning? I'm verry worried for Victoria right now.

Please take her to an emergency vet tonight. Maybe they can call your regular vet for a consult? It sounds very serious. Unfortunately, you won't get medical advice here - the best anyone can tell you is keep her warm, keep her hydrated, and seek vet help ASAP.

I'm so sorry to hear about this development with Victoria. I agree on the advice to get her to a vet tonight. With her belly so large, whatever is in there could be pressing against other organs and causing pain and distress. Since we don't know what it is, we also don't know how quickly it can progress. Every moment counts. Please keep us posted.

To be honest I'm impressed that she did so well with the first surgery Usually from what I've read invasive surgeries like that on gliders usually don't work out so well. It sounds like you really care for your glider and making sure she is healthy. But I agree, a symptom like abdominal fluids is not a good one and she needs to see a vet ASAP. I wish you the best of luck with your Victoria

This is Holley again, I thank you for all of your input. The problem is the only 24 hour vet in Tampa doesn't have a sugar glider vet on call. I called them again just now and they told me that the vet that I have an appointment with may be there tomorrow morning as soon as 8am but they aren't sure. I decided to go to bed now and wake up to check on her periodically. I will get up early and take her there before the vet gets there in the morning and wait for her, I think I can get in before her first appointment. I fed her just now and she was very excited to get the mealies & corn. She seems fine except for having a big belly and not running around as much. Thanks for everything, I will let you know how things go at the vet tomorrow. Holley 1 glider (Victoria - 11 years old)

Holley, it sounds like ascites from liver failure. An emergency vet won't do you any good, your regular vet is where to go. Since the fluid didn't appear instantanously, it came in over time, you have a little time. But just a little. She needs to make the appointment you have. Please let us know what the vet says.

Until a diagnosis is given, it is difficult to help beyond basic emergency care (warmth/fluids). Some conditions can carry the same symptoms, yet have entirely different treatments-which is why in a lot of cases it's dangerous to offer too much-if you guess wrong, you can kill someone's glider. However, there is a lot of combined experience here. If your vet can diagnose, or at least come up with an "educated guess", then we (those experienced in cases that match yours) can offer ideas based on experience within the diagnosis or range. 11 is a lot of years for a glider. Some few do make it that long-a lot don't. Your little one must be very loved and cared for to reach such an age-and I'm sure she knows it. Please update what the vet says when you get a chance.

Keep checking back, too. Since this person was not registered, perhaps she doesn't understand how we are about suggies we are worried about!
Please come back and let us know!!

Hey guys, sorry I didn't write back sooner. I wasn't a registered memeber so it wouldn't let me post until I registered and I couldn't do that from my internet phone. This is really the first chance that I have had back at my home computer. Sorry to worry everyone so much. First, thanks for all of your kind wishes and prayers. Ok, here is what I know so far. They took her in to do the ultrasound on her belly and they didn't have to shave her belly (odd?) In order to do that they needed to put her under anesthesia but she wasn't handling the anesthesia very well, she went from awake to not breathing to awake again. It was very hard to get her to sleep and still have her breathing ok. They decided that they weren't going to get time to do a thourough look at her belly without her being more asleep. They decided that they would take some fluid from her belly and then do cytology testing on it and take a small blood sample then stop. Whole process took less than 20 mins. They took 2.5mL (half of a teaspoon) of fluid from the belly and found that it had blood in it. Her vein blood sample showed that she was slightly anemic Hematocrit of 30 instead of the more normal 35 (hematocrit is a percentage of the blood that is made up of red blood cells-the oxygen carrying cells of the blood). They also took the Hematocrit of the fluid in her belly -which was 7. That is good news because that means that even though she has blood in her belly it is not straight blood. There is a lot of other fluid mixed with it. Now the problem will be finding out where all this other fluid is coming from and what is/was bleeding. The cytology report will be ready by Monday...I promise to post when I know more. They are thinking of several possiblities that it could be. One obvious answer is some type of cancer, liver or kidney or something. The blood would be from parts of the cancer rupturing and bleeding a small amount. Another possiblity is spleen rupture, caused by either trauma or disease. If it is cancer, there aren't many good options besides lots of love and supportive care. Maybe she could take Lasix (water pill to drain some fluid) but it would have minimal effect. Depending on how that went she could be ok for a little while, it is hard to say. The other possiblity is that if her spleen was hurt it could clot on it's own and stop bleeding. In which case the fluid in her belly would slowly readsorb and she could be ok. As I write this she is sitting on my shoulder, very quitely. She has been very sleepy today. Had a few mealies earlier and just had some blueberry yogurt (her fav flavor). I'm so worried about her. My vet visit today cost $541, I would pay SO MUCH MORE if they could just make her well. She is my only pet - since I only have 1 glider - I have been very close to her. It breaks my heart to have to face the fact that she won't always be with me. My heart goes out to all the people on this site that have already dealt with the pain of losing there sweet suggies. I know more sadness is coming and I am going to do everything I can to be sure that she feels completely loved and isn't in any pain. I love her so much. Again, thanks for all the kind words - you guys really know what I'm going through and that brings me comfort. Holley 1 glider - Victoria (11 years old)

Holley:
Praying they can find an answer and it will be the lesser of two evils. Could they possibly drain more of the fluid, even just to make her more comfortable? I wonder if having all that fluid is part of the reason she had such a tough time being put under? (Pressure on her heart and lungs from the fluid.) My heart goes out to you. I look at mine every day and know one day I will lose them and it just tears me up. I recently almost lost my Petey and that was awful. Please know you have my thoughts and prayers and let us know when you can what the report shows and how she is doing. God bless.
