-Kind of off topic-We bought this stuff called plasti dip at home depot thinking we could "paint" it on the edges of our cage (where the cage wire was snipped) to keep rough edges from scraping us or the gliders. I wonder if something like this is safe, it is supposedly plastic. I have not used it, cause I am not confident about it-this guys situation made me think of it. It would be cool if we could find out if it was safe. I guess it is the same idea as powdercoating, but on a do it yourself scale. Maybe you all have some thoughts on this.

ugh stupid parents are never gonna go for the "Lets destroy the cage then rebuild" it thing... They're just not the kind of parents that are like "Oh sure, lets go right out and do that!" But I'm sure after a while I could convince them... One of them, atleast

Please do NOT spray that on the cage and allow your gliders in there. It is VERY toxic to these guys, if not ingested than by the fumes themselves, not to mention the acid in the urine will cause the coating to deteriorate.
I agree with the above suggestion, if possible just replace the galvanized wire with the pvc coated wire and leave the frame.

When I was researching gliders I was looking at building my own cage. It was then I discovered that galvanized hardware cloth was a potential danger to them. I had a terrible time here in Canada finding PVC coated wire -- it is nowhere here. The options available that I found for building a cage are having the galvanized steel coated. Look it up in the yellow pages, powder coating. Buying the reptarium and praying the babies I got were not chewers, then I read about people experiencing a lot of escapes do to that issue. Special ordering PVC wire, super expensive. Getting stainless steel, super expensive. Trying the plastic hardware cloth and again hoping that my babies were not chewers, my breeder uses these quite successfully. One neat alternative I found was to use wire closet shelving. You can purchase this at most hardware stores. fortunately my story ended happily with two of my babies coming with a wonderful store-bought cage. I also spoke directly to paint stores and they would not recommend any of their products as being pet safe. However, there was a spray that my breeder was going to try because the fellow she spoke to at a pet store said he used it all the time. I'm still not sure I would trust something like that though. It is a real bummer when we find out about these things after we have already made a huge financial and time commitment BUT we need to put safety first. It would seem to me that the plastic hardware cloth would be the cheapest and safest route for you at this time. Good luck.

Plain galvanized wire is silver, the pvc coated is green sometimes black. It feels as though there is more plastic than anything but in actuality it is just galvanized covered by the pvc coating to prevent rusting. HTH
