They are VERY rare. It looks like not much is known about this trait and how it is expressed. I know Priscilla has platinum gliders and also To and Fro gliders. You may find you have to be put on a long waiting list to get one. I think I have seen Sheila offeriing pltinum hets lately. She would be the person to ask about breeding for the color. I would ask Priscilla too, she usually has more than what is posted on her site.

There are two different types of Platinum gliders. There are Platinum mosaics, which are actually mosaic gliders that mimic the platinum coloring. Then there are true Platinums, these gliders have a dilute coloring, but no mosaic gene. Both are rare, but Platinum mosaics are a little more common... If you want a platinum mosaic, you can producing it just by breeding a mosaic, but it's still kind of luck of the draw. If you are after a true platinum, like Sheila's Haley, I don't know what to tell you, lol. They are very rare. There are only 6 in existence... It seems that the trait comes from a specific line for the most part though (5 of the 6 are from the same line).

I've been doing a ton of research on platinums and talking to breeders and from what I've seen, the platinum gene seems to have originated from Cereal, a WF. The only platinums(REAL ones, like Haley and Mr. Sambuca) that I know of have come from pairing a glider from the Cereal line with a leu het. It might be that the leu gene triggers something with the WF gene and creates platinums, or it could just be a hidden gene from Cereal that acts like the WT gene and just randomly pops up.

From everything I've seen, however, you only need one parent with the gene and there ARE hets. I think of it as WT gene: you only need one glider with the gene(het or actual platinum) to produce the platinum babies, but even if they produce one, they may never produce any others. There are no gaurantees that even a true platinum will ever produce similar babies. There's still a ton of mystery about the gene.

If you're serious about wanting to breeder for platinum, then I suggest contacting Sheila. She has the first platinum, Haley, as well as a few others and would be the best person to talk to to find out more and to help to find a breeding pair with a lineage that is most likely to result in a platinum baby. wink

Actually, the platinum coloring for 5 out of the 6 platinums has been narrowed down to 2 pairings. Sammie/Hope and Noel/Frodo... The 6th platinum was from 2 normal grays.

There aren't enough platinums out there to establish a good baseline on price. Pretty much, since they are so rare, their price is whatever people are willing to pay... I would say that $4000 for a producing line platinum mosaic wouldn't be uncommon though.

Frodo is from Cereal. wink

There have never been any "unusual" gliders from just the Sammie/Hope line, that's why it is believed that the platinum gene is from Cereal. Either that or it was triggered by the combination of the WF and leu genes.

From what I can tell, the platinum gene seems to have passed down as far as Mystik's babies. Assuming the gene originates from Cereal, then Mystik got it from Bijou, who got if from Frodo, who got it from Cereal. Therefore, babies from any of those gliders(and Bailey, how could I forget him?!) should be considered 50% platinum hets(since their parents would be 100% hets), correct? Any babies from their full brothers/sisters would be POSSIBLE hets, but there would be no way of knowing for sure unless one of their babies produces one.

Who is the 6th platinum? I know Sheila has a platinum from a different line, Cadbury(http://www.toandfrogliders.com/FileHierarchy/MeetTheFamily/Babyz/Canterbury/Canterbury.htm), but he doesn't look like Haley or Mr. Sambuca, he's a bit darker.

Platinum mosaics and platinums are completely different. A platinum mosaic could never produce a platinum glider, only platinum mosaics.

Guerita, the grandfather of the platinum that Rebecca produced was Piffin, a 100% leu het out of Sammie and Hope. Honestly, I don't think that Sammie carries anything special, I think it was Hope's genetics, but that's just my 2 cents. None of Sammie's babies from other mates have thrown anything interesting (other than leus).

As for the 6th platinum, her name is Millie and she belongs to a friend of Karen's... So, she's probably located pretty close to you.

The glider Canterbury of Sheila's I'm not sure what to make of honestly. He doesn't seem to have the dilute coloring of Haley or her daughters, but he obviously isn't a normal gray. It will be interesting to see what he produces.

OT- what is your real name? I know I've asked you before, but I can't seem to remember frown

Are you talking about Mr. Sambuca? Mr. Sambuca's from Eska and Kabinz. Here's Kabinz's lineage: http://bp0.blogger.com/_0XfgH_ACHdY/SEnFiNqpP4I/AAAAAAAAAe0/89O-8DSj7Go/s1600-h/Kabinz+Lineage.bmp

He's from Mystik, who is from Bijou/Piffin, Bijou is from Frodo/Noel, and Frodo is from Cereal. So, Mr. Sambuca is from the cereal line too. wink

Millie! I met the guy who has her! He's a vendor at a pet expo in Wheaton. I only went once and when I went there he didn't have Millie so I didn't get to see her. frown He had her mate(well, the male he WANTS to be her mate). Apparently, Millie doesn't want anything to do with any other men besides her "daddy", lol. Maybe I'll go again just to see if I can get a glimpse of her. smile Do you know anything about her lineage? Maybe Karen could find out?

I was thinking the same about Canterbury. He's definately got some unique coloring, but he doesn't look like a platinum(IMHO).

My name is Nicole. wink I should probably put that in my siggy like everyone else, eh? lol

Does anyone remember Mike Sandridge's platinum? Jessica from NY bought him but gave him up when she got pregnant. He was the first platinum I had ever seen pictures of. I am wondering what his lineage is. Since he was sterile, I am wondering if he came from Helen Morano. Maybe he was actually a platinum mosaic and not just a platinum.

Nicole, I really don't think Cereal is the key to the platinum color, solely based on numbers. There are hundreds of his descendants out there, but only a handful of Platinums. Now, Sammie and Hope, on the other hand, only had a few a few offspring together. One of which produced a platinum, another, that had a grandbaby produce platinum... If Cereal was the key, then there would probably be a lot more platinums out there.

Never heard of him, but do you have any pics. smile I love seeing platinums. <3 Too bad he was sterile. Helen Morano, is she the one responsible for the sterile mosaic lines? I'm terrible with names, but hers seems familiar.

I did a quick google and found Mike's platinum glider: http://www.freewebs.com/critterkisses/colorvariations.htm

*scroll down to where it says "platinum".

Looks like a mosaic to me(has white hands).

Millie is from two gray parent's and the lines go back I think about 8-10yrs. to all gray parent's. Steve and I have talked about this at length, lol.

Her boyfriend, Exo (100% WF leu het) is now living with Millie and they are very very happy I might add clap . Steve said Millie isn't quite as interested in him as much as she was now that she has a buddy roflmao .

Her tail is healing nicely after a very long battle frown ...even if it is a little shorter now.
OH! Her parents have another joey in pouch right now...we will see what is produced...

This thought is WAY out there Leyna, but after reading your history on the platinums I thought I might add this thought. MOST of the glider's that have come up this way from far back (as in Steve's case) were from Flying Fur ranch. I will talk to Steve and see if he can narrow the lineage down a little better, but let's not get our hope's up.

Yea! I'm glad Millie likes her new man now. wink You'll have to have him give you a pic of her so we can all see her. I'd love to, but I just HATE that expo. Seeing all those animals like that just makes me sick. frown

I hope that Millie's parents have more platinums! If they did then I'd definately be tracking that guy down, lol.

Much of what is said here is fact, some speculation too.

If Millie came by way of FFR then she might be related to Cadbury. I would love to see a recent picture of her to see if she has the same look as Cadbury. Cadbury is wild and hard to get pictures of, but the pictures I took of him were when I first got him when he was five months. I will try and get more pics of him. He is a little lighter and prettier than Halo.
From what information I can gather, his line is able to produce a champagne/platinum color with only one partner carrying the gene. Figure that one dunno

Sambuca has the same genetics as Haley so it is my belief that the gene is coming from a combination of both parents - that blonde line and Hope and Sammie's Leu line, particularly because those are the exact gene combination that Bec used to create Sambuca. There have been many joeys born out of Piffin's line as well as Lil Dipper's and singly alone, none have produced platinum unless they already expressed the color. I believe that these two females are definately gene carriers, but they have to be paired with another gene carrier to produce. I could be wrong about this based on what FFR has done. There is still more to learn in this area. With the Mosaic Platinums, they are not gene carriers and do not have het offspring like the true platinums.

You are right when saying there is a platinum colored mosaic and a platinum. If you have what is called a platinum mosaic you will produce mosaic gliders and will have joeys with the blotchy mosaic patterns and colors. If you have a true platinum, you will produce gliders with all the markings of a normal glider (stripes and such), but the glider does not have white feet and will not produce gliders with the irregular blotchy color patterns.

Many people are told that they have purchased a platinum glider but what they have is a platinum mosaic, not a true platinum. I have not let any of Haley's platinum's go. The color does dilute but it is not to say that any of those gliders could produce another one like Haley. Haley is both a wfb plus a 100% het Leu also which might add to her beauty. The two platinum males I have produced out of comet - Tristan is more of a champagne and Emmaus is more platinum in color. I believe Emmaus is actually prettier than Comet his mother. Comet and her two sons are not WFB gliders, but Comet is a 100% het Leu. I believe if those three gliders were also WFB they would be even more stunning. Because I believed Haley's gene to be co-dominate, I have never sold her joeys as hets for platinum, but now that Bec has produced one out of the same bloodline, I know that they are gene carriers. cool

I want to correct myself, I said that there were only 5 platinums out of the Haley line, when there are infact 6. Due to recent events in my life I haven't really been able to keep up on what breeds are producing and I kind of let Sheila's little boy Emmus slip my mind...

Sheila, if you think Cadbury's breeding genetics (how the color is passed on) is different that Haley's, then what's to say that his coloring, while similar isn't caused by a different gene? I really wish we could have seen pictures of him when he came OOP...

I think Cadbury's gene is like Haley's in that there is a gene passed on. That has already been proven out. His parents are normal color and they have produced four so far that have his coloring. He was a twin and his brother is just like him but not as light. I have owned him for five months now One thing that puzzles me about him is that his neice produced a champagne and his neice is normal color. The neice was paired with a wfb.

I have Cadbury's twin brother Cappachino and he is very light. He has produced twin girls with his WFB WT mate Twilight. "Mocha" she looks like a dark normal color glider but does have a tad different coloring and her twin sister is "Latte" who is what I'm calling a WFB Champagne Platinum who is not as light as her daddy, but she has gotten even prettier as she has gotten older.

Here's a couple pictures of Cappachino.
